    Trainernetzwerk Other Conferences Calls for Proposals AP Workshops and Courses Fellowships and Grants Seminars and Courses Give AATG Endowed Scholarship Fund Friends of AATG Endowment AATG General Fund Planned Giving Hall of Recognition Store Community Search Search more Calendar 2 1 2016 3 15 2016 National German Exam Level 1 Registration 2 11 2016 2 13 2016 Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages 2 15 2016 AATG Office Closed 2 15 2016 GSA Conference Proposal Deadline 2 17 2016 Level 2 3 4 National German Exam Scores Sent Featured Members Member Accolades Edit This Favorite Name Category Share Yes No Keep Private Organizational Profile and History With over 4 000 members the American Association of Teachers of German is for teachers of German at all levels of instruction and all those interested in the teaching of German Founded in 1926 AATG believes that bringing the language literature and cultures of the German speaking world to all Americans is a vital humanistic endeavor which serves an essential national interest With members in all 50 states and nearly 20 countries the American Association of Teachers of German is the only individual membership organization in the United States dedicated to the teaching of the language literature and culture of the German speaking countries The AATG has 60 local chapters which support a variety of local projects with activities focused on public relations professional development and teacher and student immersion Members represent elementary middle junior high school high school college university community colleges and heritage language school teachers 44 percent of AATG s members teach at the pre collegiate level 34 post secondary and 22 are currently not teaching The AATG is governed by an Executive Council consisting of 10 members including a president vice president treasurer presiding officer of the chapter presidents assembly and six regional representatives The teaching level of Executive Council members is balanced and alternates between post secondary and pre collegiate at each election The Executive Council meets in November during the AATG Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the ACTFL Convention and World Languages Expo The AATG employs seven staff members in offices located in Cherry Hill New Jersey outside Philadelphia The American Association of Teachers of German strives to Promote the highest quality of the teaching and research of the language literatures and cultures of the German speaking world and expand teaching and research at all levels and in all settings Define and promote the highest standards for teachers and learners of the language literatures and cultures of the German speaking world Emphasize the importance and obligation of providing increased access to and equity in all German program offerings at all levels for all students including those from multiracial multicultural and multiethnic backgrounds and for students in diverse geographic settings Foster relationships within the language teaching profession the teaching profession in general and the educational establishment at large Communicate to policy makers and the public the rationale substance and value of learning German as well as

    diversity in the study of German language and German speaking peoples and their cultures The AATG recognizes the importance and the obligation of providing increased access to and equity in all program offerings at all levels of education Through the Alle lernen Deutsch initative AATG strives to ensure the study of German by a diverse American population taught by a profession whose members themselves reflect the racial and ethnic composition of our nation The AATG strives to assure that the contemporary German speaking world is accurately reflected in the instruction of German Mission Statement The American Association of Teachers of German AATG affirms the diversity of the citizenry of the United States and the wealth of a multicultural society The Association recognizes the importance and the obligation of providing increased access to and equity in all program offerings at all levels of education and espouses the principle that the offerings must consciously and consistently reflect adherence to appropriate standards The AATG acknowledges its responsibility to ensure the study of German by a diverse American population taught by a profession whose members themselves reflect the racial and ethnic composition of our nation We recognize our obligation to ensure that present and prospective teachers of German have access to up to date information on German speaking people and their cultures We therefore affirm the principle that the multicultural composition of the contemporary German speaking world be accurately reflected in the instruction of German History 2010 marked 20 years since the establishment of AATG s Alle lernen Deutsch initiative to support diversity in the study of German language and German speaking peoples and their cultures In 1989 AATG president Renate Schulz established the Committee for the Recruitment and Retention of Minorities a national task force charged with developing strategies on promoting the benefits of the study of German for all students at all levels The committee was renamed the Alle lernen Deutsch committee in 2001 Committee membership included teachers representing the broad range of K 16 instruction who reflected the diversity in the US They formulated guidelines for developing a culturally relevant pedagogy that would advance intercultural awareness in German classes and increase the involvement of underrepresented populations in German studies The committee work focused on recruiting and retaining teachers and students in the German classroom from all backgrounds and providing up to date information for teachers to use in their classrooms which reflect the multicultural population of the German speaking world The committee has presented sessions at the ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo since the early 90s which included demonstrations of ideas for teaching German to students of color and using materials developed in summer seminars including the Neuer Blick seminars organized in Berlin A special issue of Die Unterrichtspraxis Teaching German Focus on Diversity was published by AATG in Fall 1992 The work of the Alle lernen Deutsch committee is just as relevant today as it was 20 years ago Students of color make up one third of the
