    Women in Higher Education Reports Publications AAUP Policies Reports Academe Economic Status Report Compensation Survey Bulletin of the AAUP The Redbook Journal of Academic Freedom AAUP Bookstore News AAUP in the News AAUP Updates For the Media Get Involved Upcoming Events Local Toolkit Issue Campaigns Find Chapters Conferences Start a Chapter I Need Help With Workplace Issues Understanding Terms and Abbreviations Responding to Financial Crisis You are here Home NEWS AAUP UPDATES Developments in the University of Wisconsin System The AAUP issued a statement today about developments in the University of Wisconsin System After the Wisconsin Legislature passed Act 55 removing tenure and shared governance protections for faculty in the University of Wisconsin System the AAUP and AFT Wisconsin called on the Wisconsin Board of Regents to put in place policies consistent with AAUP principles through a process involving appropriate faculty and staff governance bodies The Board of Regents temporarily enshrined prior statutory language in policy and created a system wide shared governance task force to promulgate new governance policy The UWS administration assured the AAUP that the Regents policy would follow AAUP standards and system administrators had an initial conversation with the AAUP s Department of Academic Freedom Tenure and Governance The shared governance task force has since been disbanded and draft recommendations being circulated contain numerous examples of potential violations of AAUP recommended policies and standards The Board of Regents is currently considering a policy similar to one in place at the University of Michigan Of particular concern are policies related to post tenure review The AAUP national staff and leaders remain willing to assist in ensuring that policies in the University of Wisconsin System comport with AAUP standards but current developments in the University of Wisconsin System are not promising Read or download the pdf of the

    of the AAUP The Redbook Journal of Academic Freedom AAUP Bookstore News AAUP in the News AAUP Updates For the Media Get Involved Upcoming Events Local Toolkit Issue Campaigns Find Chapters Conferences Start a Chapter I Need Help With Workplace Issues Understanding Terms and Abbreviations Responding to Financial Crisis You are here Home NEWS AAUP UPDATES Statement on Presidential Searches The AAUP s November 3 Statement on Presidential Searches calls upon colleges and universities to avoid closed secretive searches and clarifies existing AAUP policies about presidential searches Contrary to the AAUP s principles of shared governance governing boards at several campuses around the country have conducted secretive searches in recent months without adequate faculty and public participation in the process While AAUP policies acknowledge the need for a confidential phase in which a search committee may develop the initial candidate pool such search committees should involve faculty members All searches should include an open phase involving campus visits and a public forum in which faculty students and others can share their opinions The statement argues that the obligations of public and private non profit colleges and universities to serve the public interest necessitate the protections of shared governance including faculty
