  • Association for Conflict Resolution Houston - Arbitration
    Parties are compelled by their own agreement to accept decision of arbitrator as final and binding Arbitration is usually a last resort or final stage of grievance process when other ADR processes like mediation have failed The objective of arbitration is adjudication not compromise Informal Process Similar to court trial opening statements made cases presented through introduction of evidence including testimony of witnesses closing statements made Arbitrator has a set period of time in which to render a decision on the merits of the parties claims Decision is called an Award Award should be just and equitable Award does not have to be reasoned and contain findings of fact or conclusions of law However the Award should be supported by evidence gathered during the arbitration hearing Parties have a set period of time in which to challenge the award Challenging the award is usually done by a motion to the appropriate court to modify or vacate the award Grounds for modifying or vacating an arbitration award are narrow Most Awards are final Winning party may apply to the courts to confirm the arbitration award and turn the arbitration award into a court judgment and use court to enforce judgments Industries

    the new president of the Association for Conflict Resolution Houston Chapter at a wonderful reception at Season s 52 in the Uptown Galleria area The premium wine and gourmet bites of shrimp chicken satey and flatbreads were enjoyed by everyone In addition to Melissa Back the whole slate was approved as presented so the new board members include Jeff Aresty JD president of the Internet Bar Association River Dunavin past president of Non Violent Communication NVC H Adil Gokturk mediator Donna Jubert mediator and arbitrator Sylvia Mayers JD mediator and arbitrator and Manousso Mediation Scholarship student board member Andrea Cooper a graduate student MLA from the University of St Thomas The new board members join current board members Fran Brockstein JD family mediator and ACRH president elect Dr Barbara Sunderland Manousso CEO of Manousso Mediation and Arbitration LLC former ACRH president and program chair Victoria McClain mediator ACRH vice president and board treasurer Dick Myers mediator arbitrator and WebMaster and Marilyn Myers UH workplace and conflict coach and board secretary Judge Josefina Rendon 2014 ACRH president was applauded and gifted for her 2014 contributions and leadership as she passed the gavel to Melissa Melissa Back JD at 31 years old

    with allied organizations and increasing the public presence of ACRH We asked our members to give feedback on last year s program and tell us what future events they wanted Based on their input this year ACRH will focus on advanced skills training particularly in the areas of workplace marketing and negotiation Plus we will hold several fun events where members can socialize network and meet friends Another key part of achieving our mission is creating partnerships with like minded organizations This year we have two major conferences in the Greater Houston area The Texas Association of Mediators TAM will hold its annual conference in The Woodlands on February 24 25 Then the International Ombudsman Association holds its conference from April 13 18 in Houston ACRH is planning to participate in these conferences to further our common goals of providing professional development fostering ethical practices and the advancement of conflict resolution practitioners Our mission includes promoting the public understanding of conflict resolution However today most people either do not know what we do or are confused by all the different terms we use It is our responsibility to inform our potential clients what conflict resolution services are available ACRH will

    having a very pleasant Spring and enjoying this delightful time of year Spring is a time of year when everything is in bloom and all things seem to be made new once again This time of year invites thoughtful reflection as we consider ways to foster self renewal in many facets of our lives both personal and professional This Spring ACRH has made efforts to support its members renewal self improvement greater conscientious and skill building so that we can be highly effective dispute resolution practitioners ACR Houston has been very focused on helping its Members become better practitioners by providing opportunities sharpen their conflict resolution skills In March ACRH Member Richard G Myers taught us how to develop a website to promote our businesses and enhance our internet marketing In April well renown international mediator Kenneth Cloke delivered a wonderful training to help us explore t he internal and external frontiers of conflict resolution to identify and explore techniques for dealing with mediations that fall apart disastrously and creating more opportunities for mediation to come together miraculously During our ACRH Chapter Meeting Dinner Cloke encouraged us to contemplate our responsibility as global citizens for the environmental social economic and

    and marketing features by posting their bios photos and contact information The new website has also proven to be quite an efficient and useful tool for communicating with ACRH members and contacts about chapter meetings programs trainings seminars and job postings Throughout the year ACRH has provided many training and development opportunities for its members In March Richard Myers taught us how to develop a website to promote our businesses to take full advantage of internet marketing In April well renown international mediator Kenneth Cloke helped us understand t he internal and external frontiers of conflict resolution and contemplate our responsibility to address global conflict In May John Kenyon enhanced our understanding of mediator ethics and related complexities In July Pattie Porter delivered ACRH s first webinar which introduced us to conflict coaching and utilizing this resource in our mediation practices In September Barbara Manousso helped us explore business opportunities for developing and expanding an elder mediation practice ACRH has worked hard to meet the needs of its membership and our work has paid off with phenomenal membership growth and renewed interest in our organization This year ACRH more than doubled its membership and we now have 136 members ACRH
