  • The Twilight of the West - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
States had been forged by events revolts against clerical authority industrial innovations capitalist consolidation through colonial conquest that did not occur elsewhere And so religion has failed to disappear under the juggernaut of industrial capitalism Not only Islam Hinduism and the Russian Orthodox Church but also such quietist religions as Buddhism have experienced militant revivals as ideologies often simultaneously for oppressive regimes and the wretched of the earth The middle classes whether in India Thailand Turkey or Egypt betray a greater liking for authoritarian minded leaders such as Erdoğan and Modi than for the rule of law and social justice But then Western ideologues during the Cold War absurdly prettified the history of capitalism in the West obscuring its umbilical link to imperialism abroad and widespread coercion and suffering at home apart from a few clearsighted observers such as Raymond Aron who knew that nowhere in Europe during the long years when industrial populations were growing rapidly factory chimneys looming up over the suburbs and railways and bridges being constructed were personal liberties universal suffrage and the parliamentary system combined As the Russia of Yeltsin and now Putin confirm capitalism always was compatible with the denial of democratic rights China too has achieved a form of capitalist modernity without Westernization The openly undemocratic small centers of global capitalism Singapore and the Gulf kingdoms may in fact be less prone to violent anarchy than their neighbors The overall scorecard for the nation states of the mid 20th century can only discomfit those expecting a worldwide upsurge of liberal democracy in tandem with capitalism Nations that had been insufficiently or too fervidly imagined Myanmar and Pakistan come to mind could not break free of their flawed beginnings and have kept lurching for much of the last half century between civilian and military despots Today even ruthless despotism as the shattering of Iraq Libya and Syria reveals is no longer a reliable bulwark against ethnic disaffection or a dissolvent of tribal solidarity Countries that managed to rebuild commanding state structures after popular nationalist revolutions such as China Vietnam and Iran look stable and cohesive when compared to a traditional monarchy like Thailand or a wholly artificial nation state like Iraq The bloody regimes inaugurated by Khomeini and Mao survived some terrible internal and external conflicts the Korean and Iran Iraq wars the Cultural Revolution and general blood letting partly because their core nation building ideologies secured consent from many of their subjects Many formally democratic nation states on the other hand such as India Indonesia and South Africa have struggled to maintain their national consensus in the face of global capitalism Nation states already struggling against ethnic and religious disaffection and various sectarian rebellions have seen their internal unity further undermined by capitalism s dominant ethic of primitive accumulation and private gratification Ostensible democracies such as India and Israel have seen their foundational commitments to collective welfare reconfigured by a nexus of neoliberal politicians and majoritarian nationalists who now try to bludgeon their disaffected subjects into loyalty to a Jewish state and a Hindu nation Large sections of their angry and fearful populations have become vulnerable to demagogic passion Indonesia the world s largest Muslim country which wisely decentralized after a long spell of despotic rule is much less affected by religious political mobilization Still many populous countries trying to catch up with the West through rapid industrial growth face the problem of surplus population with no colonial possessions to send them to These latecomers to modernity can only colonize their own territories uproot their own indigenous peoples the result is endless insurgencies and counter insurgencies wars and massacres the rise of such anachronisms as Maoist guerrillas in India and Nepal the increased attraction of unemployed and unemployable youth to extremist organizations and the endless misery that provokes thousands of desperate Asians and Africans to make the risky journey to what they see as the center of successful modernity Europe The outbreak of armed and fanatical religious political movements ethnic civil wars anarchic secessionism the return of piracy unreliable global capital flows large scale culturally discordant migrations and the emergence of new centers of wealth and power in the Persian Gulf Latin America and East Asia each one of these factors aggravate a widespread sense of disorientation and uncertainty The loss of sovereignty individual and collective seems to have been an increasingly common experience since 1989 The collapse of communism enabled capitalism to renounce its ethic of responsibility In practically every country old social compacts based on a commitment to state action and collective welfare have given way to a belief in the miracle of markets Uncontrollable capital flows have demoted even the elected leaders of former imperial nation states such as Britain and France into enablers of investor friendly climates Social democracy is in retreat across Europe but it had barely been built in large parts of Asia and Africa before being discarded The rich and the middle class retreat into gated communities and move their investments and assets offshore the poor deprived of public goods such as health and education are left to fend for themselves It is every person for themselves The global crisis which is as much moral and intellectual as it is political and environmental puts into question above all our long submission to Western ideas of politics and economy Whether it is catastrophic wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or disastrous interventions in Libya the financial crisis of 2008 soaring unemployment in Europe which seems like a problem with no solution and is likely to empower far right parties across the continent the unresolved crisis of the Euro hideous income disparities in both Europe and the United States the widespread suspicion that big money has corrupted democratic processes the absurdly dysfunctional American political system Edward Snowden s revelations about the National Security Agency or the dramatic loss of a sense of possibility for young people everywhere all of this separately and together has not only severely depleted everywhere and Australia s Arckaringa Basin has 20 trillion worth of recoverable crude reserves more than Alberta s tar sands As the hunt for more oil and gas escalates thousands of scientists around the world including dozens of Nobel winners warn us that if we continue doing business as usual the Earth will experience temperature changes that humanity as we know it simply cannot endure Yet despite the math the evidence the common sense most our intellectual elites are still calmly sipping their lattes reports of record temperatures unprecedented flooding and forest fires pop up almost daily but these narratives are somehow disconnected from the larger story of planet Earth in peril Distracted by fiscal crises the growth imperative and maintaining power our Obamas Harpers Camerons Putins and Rudds pass no urgent climate legislation Big Oil prevails by paying off legislators and funding disinformation campaigns whenever their business model is threatened Meanwhile the Federal Reserve keeps pumping 85 billion of stimulus a month into the financial system to keep the capitalist corpse twitching It s a crazy do or die moment we re living through and the big bang at the end of it may well shock us all Remember when unexpected blips started popping up on Wall Street in 2010 The Dow Jones plummeted 600 points only to recover twenty minutes later It happened again in 2012 when 150 stocks spiraled 10 percent in seconds And last April 23 the Dow suddenly lost 130 points in two seconds What triggers these blips An oil spill A natural disaster A rogue algorithm An errant tweet A hacker Could the mother of all blips be just around the corner One fine day maybe tomorrow morning will this human experiment of ours on planet Earth spiral into the abyss and stay there

but also generates some of the most powerful bonds often perverse connections that we share with each other and our societies And yet contemporary social and economic production has an increasingly common character which defies and exceeds the bounds of property Capital s ability to generate profit is declining since it is losing its entrepreneurial capacity and its power to administer social discipline and cooperation Instead capital increasingly accumulates wealth primarily via forms of rent most often organized through financial instruments through which it captures value that is produced socially and relatively independent of its power But every instance of private accumulation reduces the power and productivity of the common Private property is thus becoming ever more not only a parasite but also an obstacle to social production and social welfare Finally a third pillar of democratic constitutions and object of increasing antagonism as we said earlier rests on the systems of representation and their false claims to establish democratic governance Putting an end to the power of professional political representatives is one of the few slogans from the socialist tradition that we can affirm wholeheartedly in our contemporary condition Professional politicians along with corporate leaders and the media elite operate only the weakest sort of representative function The problem is not so much that politicians are corrupt although in many cases this is also true but rather that the constitutional structure isolates the mechanisms of political decision making from the powers and desires of the multitude Any real process of democratization in our societies has to attack the lack of representation and the false pretenses of representation at the core of the constitution Recognizing the rationality and necessity of revolt along these three axes and many others which animate many struggles today is however really only the first step the point of departure The heat of indignation and the spontaneity of revolt have to be organized in order to last over time and to construct new forms of life alternative social formations The secrets to this next step are as rare as they are precious On the economic terrain we need to discover new social technologies for freely producing in common and for equitably distributing shared wealth How can our productive energies and desires be engaged and increased in an economy not founded on private property How can welfare and basic social resources be provided to all in a social structure not regulated and dominated by state property We must construct the relations of production and exchange as well as the structures of social welfare that are composed of and adequate to the common The challenges on the political terrain are equally thorny Some of the most inspiring and innovative events and revolts in the last decade have radicalized democratic thinking and practice by occupying and organizing a space such as a public square with open participatory structures or assemblies maintaining these new democratic forms for weeks or months Indeed the internal organization of the movements themselves has been

to Americans as citizens to America as a nation and to Homo sapiens as a species Acknowledging that insurrection is only warranted when there is no other avenue to fully removing the corrupt from power we will contend that all other tactics have already been tried unsuccessfully Every politician in office today Democrat and Republican alike accepts corporate bribes and is therefore corrupt Their election is perverse evidence that they groveled before corporate lords and do not serve the will of the people We know this because on January 21 2010 the US Supreme Court told us who runs the nation by granting corporations the freedom to donate unlimited amounts of money to political candidates As it is already an established statistical fact that the candidate who spends the most money wins in 9 out of 10 races it is undeniable that we live in an era where anyone genuinely opposed to the corporate takeover of America and unwilling to compromise will never be elected That makes the government a dangerous enterprise that is a hazard to individual freedom Not content with stripping us as citizens of our sovereignty our corporate backed rulers have instituted a foreign policy that delights in permanent war and international instability From cynically squandering billions of dollars of taxpayer money each year in gifts to the apartheid state of Israel or in military support given to keep Arab tyrants in power everything about America s foreign policy is wrong pro war anti freedom and unjust Two preemptive wars in the last decade ongoing occupations with new war crimes daily secret drone attacks on civilians military bases encircling the world a nefarious unelected military industrial complex sows discord abroad and guarantees that our nation will never live in peace And then there is the deepest charge of all America s corporatocracy is committing a crime against humanity Nature is dying sentient species are disappearing catastrophic climate change threatens us all And yet the ideology of rampant consumerism reigns supreme in America Ecocide is the official policy of these mammon worshipers who use their military might to keep the oil flowing and industrial pollutants pumping Glaciers are melting oceans are acidifying climate wars are looming If America is not overthrown the cancerous growth of capitalism will not end until all life on Earth is extinct Everywhere we look there are signs of moral decay political corruption and fascistic tendencies However activists have not been passive For decades since the end of democracy in America first became undeniable we have tried every tactic to avert catastrophe We have voted written letters donated money held signs protested in marches clicked links signed petitions tweeted websites written books taught classes knitted sweaters learned how to farm turned off the television programmed apps engaged in direct action committed petty vandalism All this has been for naught Popular revolution remains the only reasonably viable tactic remaining In the 18th century America s founding fathers were in the same situation as we are

has been compromised by corporate lobbyists who must scrutinize and vet every piece of major legislation before it can be voted into law On the surface things seem fine Spectacular election campaigns reignite hope and usher in change passionate debates unfold every day on CNN and FOX and millions of people seem politically energized launching cyber campaigns 24 7 In many ways America s two party system seems to be thriving offering substantive philosophical and policy choices Yet teeming just beneath the surface is the truth Big Banks Big Oil Big Pharma and Big Food have the power And every congressman and senator must feed at the corporate trough Only the rise of a mythical third party can save America now As the planet heats up and our global systems approach their terminal tipping point the people will wake up to the fact that in essence both left and right are dreaming the same dream fighting the same fight Opposing views will synthesize into one powerful voice one unified movement screaming for radical freedom radical democracy and a future we can all believe in Once this synthesis kicks in maybe as soon as 2015 we ll see the first rumblings

that NASA is doing research on sun gazing Following a yogi from India as he begins his process of cutting ties with a parasitic human existence by allowing the combined energies of the Sun and Earth to fuse through his body and feed his soul Scientifically implausible the rationalists scream A hoax But imagine feeding your soul to replenish your cellular respiration Imagine the Earth not as green and blue grid work but as life humming in our bones Yogis have imagined it so as have the Aboriginals of North America who have long held heshook ishtsawalk that everything is connected It means the total lived experience of the land the consistency of the soil the spirit of the wind and the many whispers and thoughts of the people who are related to it as part of a web like reality that defines our relationship to place our sense of belonging And if you won t take their word for it there is the French concept of terroir to consider Colloquially used to refer to the unique personality of wine based on the composition of the soil the direction of the air and minute regional and environmental particularities this imagining of a sense of place is also a reference to the people of a locale It says every fibre of your being belongs here Under the cacophonous blare of industry these whispers are barely perceptible Floating fifteen storeys above the Earth we can barely imagine belonging to the land without the land belonging to us But the yogis are emerging shoes off and ready to bask in metabolic revolution And our places are still there those places that mark us that follow us wherever we go tugging at us to return unchanged by sterile cartography ugly xenophobic nationalism and the
