  • Chris Hedges's Endgame Strategy - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
The viewer can believe whatever he or she wants to believe Nothing is actually elucidated or explained The sound bites by Republicans or Democrats the Liberals or the Conservatives are accepted at face value And once the television lights are turned off the politicians go back to the business of serving business Human history rather than being a chronicle of freedom and democracy is characterized by ruthless domination Our elites have done what all elites do They have found sophisticated mechanisms to thwart popular aspirations disenfranchise the working and increasingly the middle class keep us passive and make us serve their interests The brief democratic opening in our society in the early 20th century made possible by radical movements unions and a vigorous press has again been shut tight We were mesmerized by political charades cheap consumerism spectacle and magical thinking as we were ruthlessly stripped of power Adequate food clean water and basic security are now beyond the reach of half the world s population Food prices have risen 61 percent globally since December 2008 according to the International Monetary Fund The price of wheat has exploded more than doubling in the last eight months to 8 56 a bushel When half of your income is spent on food as it is in countries such as Yemen Egypt Tunisia Somalia and Ivory Coast price increases of this magnitude bring with them widespread malnutrition and starvation Food prices in the United States have risen over the past three months at an annualized rate of five percent There are some 40 million poor in the United States who devote 35 percent of their after tax incomes to pay for food As the cost of fossil fuel climbs as climate change continues to disrupt agricultural production and as populations and unemployment swell we will find ourselves convulsed in more global and domestic unrest Food riots and political protests will be frequent as will malnutrition and starvation Desperate people employ desperate measures to survive And the elites will use the surveillance and security state to attempt to crush all forms of popular dissent The last people who should be in charge of our food supply or our social and political life not to mention the welfare of sick children are corporate capitalists and Wall Street speculators But none of this is going to change until we turn our backs on the wider society denounce the orthodoxies peddled in our universities and in the press by corporate apologists and construct our opposition to the corporate state from the ground up It will not be easy It will take time And it will require us to accept the status of social and political pariahs especially as the lunatic fringe of our political establishment steadily gains power as the crisis mounts The corporate state has nothing to offer the left or the right but fear It uses fear to turn the population into passive accomplices And as long as we remain afraid or believe that the

at its most philosophically profound Desert Solitaire obstinately righteous Fire on the Mountain and passionately violent The Monkey Wrench Gang The last of course inspired the formation of Earth First and continues to inform sporadic Earth Liberation Front actions But until now environmental militancy has been minimal recruitment constrained by its bourgeois Western origins Bin Laden s clarion call changes all that It marks the beginning of a holy war against the West that many Western environmentalists may come to endorse Post Copenhagen it is clear that our nominally democratic society is under the sway of a corporatist obstructionist oligarchy whose fat cats will jettison any sustainable vision of the future if it hurts their bottom line And therein lies the significance of bin Laden s speech While one can argue divisively about the Israeli occupation of Palestine the potential for democracy in the Middle East and the viability of alternatives to capitalism it is both unarguable and unifying that humanity is hurtling toward a precipitous climate catastrophe It is of course a highly suspect proposition that anyone in good conscience could rally behind bin Laden He has blood on his hands that can never be washed off no matter how green the water And with a political biography eerily reminiscent of Emmanuel Goldstein from George Orwell s 1984 one must wonder whether bin Laden is actually dead a creation of the CIA or simply the pseudonym for a group of jihadist writers The importance of bin Laden s words however is not what they portend for his future but what they suggest for ours There seem to be two possible scenarios that could prevent civilization s collapse One is that we continue the scientific materialist project Embrace geoengineering wholeheartedly and hope that an entirely unnatural synthetic world can save

  • The Birth of Altermodern - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
the traumas of modernity where millions were slaughtered because they fell on the wrong side of the imaginary Aryan non Aryan divide the project of deconstructing binaries should have been a positive development In fact the primary way of disturbing categories pointing out that the primary term is only defined through exclusion of the other might have effectively stalled the pseudo scientific Nazi eugenic project The problem with the postmodern approach however was that it came too late While it could have offered a way out of the genocide of World War II by the time the project of deconstructing distinctions was widespread in academia and had filtered down to society at large oppression lay not in the maintenance of dualism but in the opposite increasing hybridization That is the irony of contemporary philosophy what we take to be a tool of resistance the application of cutting edge theory to our contemporary moment turns out to be a hammer of our oppression And by rejecting binary thought outright we were not challenging the status quo we were helping it along Consider the twisted fate of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari s magnum opus A Thousand Plateaus Capitalism and Schizophrenia a text long hailed as revolutionary because of its emphasis on fluidity hybridity and multiplicity as anticapitalist tactics of resistance The book has served as a handbook for leftist activists anarchists and culture jammers since its French publication in 1980 And Michel Foucault the archetype of politically engaged French leftist philosophers even went as far as to declare that perhaps one day this century will be known as Deleuzian a statement that was taken to prophesy the inevitable victory of our May 68 inspired anticapitalist struggle And yet according to Slavoj Žižek in the final chapter of his book Organs Without Bodies On Deleuze and Consequences the exemplars of Deleuzian philosophy are not the anarchists but the late capitalists In short and stated even more pointedly the thought of Foucault Deleuze and Guattari the ultimate philosophers of resistance of marginal positions crushed by the hegemonic power network is effectively the ideology of the newly emerging ruling class For Žižek the misapprehension of Deleuze as a philosopher of resistance has led to the awkward situation where major alterglobalization theorists are espousing a suspiciously similar rhetoric to that of the globalizers Singling out Naomi Klein Žižek continues So when Naomi Klein writes that n eo liberal economics is biased at every level toward centralization consolidations homogenization It is a war waged on diversity is she not focusing on a figure of capitalism whose days are numbered Would she not be applauded by contemporary capitalist modernizers Is not the latest trend in corporate management itself diversify devolve power try to mobilize local creativity and self organization Is not anticentralization the topic of the new digitalized capitalism The significance of Žižek s stinging critique of Klein is that it effectively tars an entire lineage of leftist political theory leading from Deleuzian multiplicities to Hardt and
