  • Into Africa - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
through a thin tree line and then suddenly we were on a ledge with a valley the size of the Atlantic expanding in front of us Small hills bubbled up across the landscape dotted with huts cow fields and farms Bev pointed to the nearest hill See that little house on the top she said That s where she lives We set off down the slope pausing periodically to take pictures of chameleons on the nearby bushes as we made our way through the skinny dusty paths totally unfit for any automobile Down the valley and up the hill to Grandmother s house we went eventually reaching the little homestead that Bev had pointed out Two toddlers ran to greet us but they grew more cautious as we got closer One a little boy was wearing tattered sneakers that revealed his toes and a grime colored shirt That must be him Bev said He s about the age Penny s son would be Sho sho s daughter ushered us into the sitting room The space was bare except for a wooden table and some chairs that were lacking their cushions The walls were insulated with cardboard and decorated with chalk drawings presumably created by the older children On the door of the threadbare room was a benevolent greeting Welcome all visitors in this house Welcome again and again Looking around the room I was surprised by how clean it was The building housed five children yet there were no toys or dishes strewn about no messes shoved into the corners It would dawn on me later on that the kids kept the house clean simply because they had no possessions with which to mess it up We were told by Sho sho s daughter that her mother had gone to the river to get water We trooped down the thin dirt path that had been dug into the side of the hill by years of foot traffic The river was in a relatively low area so we saw it from above before we reached it A small group of women were gathered trying to scoop up what water was left after the two year drought As they finished filling their twenty liter drums they hoisted them onto their backs throwing straps around their foreheads to hold them in place and climbed up the hill Sho sho came last Before strapping her jug on she stopped to shake our hands and I understood that Bev had not been exaggerating when she d said Sho sho was almost 100 years old Her skin had weathered to tar paper and her eyes had taken refuge deep in their sockets Standing about four and a half feet tall Sho sho hoisted the water which at 40 pounds must have been half her weight onto her back and started toward the house indicating for us to go in front of her As we returned to the house Sho sho carried the water all the way

  • The Baseline Shift - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
linking all major U S cities By 2008 there were 2 734 102 miles of paved public roads in the U S with an additional 1 324 245 miles of unpaved public roads In four generations the U S went from zero paved roads to over 2 7 million miles of road extending into almost every parcel of land in the country In four generations we went from wondering if there was a way to reach a destination to never thinking about if we can get there just how many hours it will take The baseline shift from wilderness landscape to lifeless grid happened so slowly and gradually that few of us ever noticed Just millions of unremarkable changes and then we open our eyes to find a world wholly unrecognizable from the one we were born into abridged excerpt from remotefootprints org FROM Adbusters 113 Rewild the Child Order this issue Subscribe to Adbusters Facebook Twitter Google Pinterest Wuwei No Trying No Doing A Smaller and Smaller Imagination Also In This Magazine Play Jazz Improvise the Carnival of Delight August 18 2014 Israel Palestine The ecopolitics beneath the world s hottest conflict June 23 2014 Zimbabwe The ecopolitics beneath

  • Enter the Drones - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
Wars so too did the system of oversight and review of lethal covert ops that had been carefully constructed over the course of the previous decade The Clinton Administration haunted by the Iran Contra scandal placed strict oversight mechanisms around the approval process for lethal covert actions which under Clinton were rarely approved In the early days of George W Bush his administration intended to keep many of Clinton s checks and balances in place Military drone use was limited to surveillance September 11th conveniently changed everything Enter the drones In 2001 under Bush the military had 167 drones Today under Obama it has over 7 000 Under Obama unmanned drones have been approved and legitimized for targeted killing in Afghanistan Pakistan and Yemen But the guy making the life or death decision to press a button and kill is sitting inside a control room in the Nevada desert His screen shows tiny pixellated figures He struggles to tell the difference between a child and a dog and so he s likely to hit off target cue leaked footage provided by Manning at least once in a while Between 3 000 to 5 000 people have died this way in Pakistan Yemen and Somalia with hundreds more dead in Afghanistan Iraq and Libya Other than a handful of confirmed targets we don t know much about who is being killed Estimates of civilian deaths range from single digits per year to over a thousand while some ex military officers estimate that over 90 of those killed by drone strikes are innocents In either case extra judicial killing is illegal Despite this Obama continues to declare that unlike bombs or chemical weapons drones are collateral damage aside precise target driven controlled and swift Any adult male killed by a drone strike is by his official definition a militant a terrorist an enemy of the state Each drone kill is a shiny new plate in the armour of post 9 11 America Assassinations are now renamed high value targeting Everyone s swallowing it We are entering a dangerous new era of moral depravity America Obama is not only your president he s the Chief Commander of a covert high tech high stakes killing machine one that s equipped with sniper drones unaccountable assassination squads who carry out unreported night raids and a Joint Special Operations Command JSOC unit that produces ever expanding kill lists As a constitutional law expert by trade Obama is the perfect person to carry out secret manipulations of the law called out by Senator Ron Wyden which then facilitate the US military s transgression of the Patriot Act and international law not to mention morals Do unto others as you would have them do unto you This universal and timeless ethical law is the glue of every civilization Should this glue melt the civilization will come to perish on its own sword If the Obama administration paused to consider this tried and true moral maxim they would realize

  • The NoMo Manifesto - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
of years of evolution For far too long we patted ourselves on the back at every leap of progress and tried to bury and deny the surmounting externalities left in the wake of our esteemed projects and flashy achievements We thought of ourselves as clever flouting natural selection and planting mono crops to feed hungry hordes only to discover we laid waste to the fields We improved ourselves in tantalizing ways but neglected our animal brothers and sisters We became an extraordinarily successful species But this period of success is but a blink in the span of time And the destiny of every successful species so far is to wipe itself out Nietzsche wondered Is it really impossible to believe that we wouldn t use those very talents and resources to draw back before the abyss It is terrible to think that we have learned so much discovered so much that we have come to know so much but have forgotten how to live That we have the foresight to see our potential end but not the will or imagination to forge another path We sent a Curiosity rover to Mars but have lost our sense of wonderment for the Earth Let us leave behind the god of Logic like an empty fossil forsaken and foreign Let us throw out all these rancid memes into the hungry dungheap of history Let us trash all the sacred cows that have monopolized our beliefs for eons Let us demolish the ideals that have hemmed in our imaginations for far too long And may we make compost of all the bullshit of this bygone paradigm and out of it grow something unburdened innocent outrageous raw and totally new But before this new seed can receive any light the ruinous high reaching walls that have been built around it must fall These are the walls of the corporate fortress and therein many a grave enemy lurk First we must wipe out the energy giants who have made their billions off the destruction of our planet forbidding the knowledge of sustainable alternatives making taboo and illegal the resistance against them Then there are the advertising corporations who have corrupted our most basic instincts and honest desires who have made us forget what love is and how it is to be expressed who have filled our hearts with long lists of voracious wants that correspond to the length of the assembly lines where these putrid desires are manufactured We will take on these archetypal mind polluters and beat them at their own game We will bring their image factory to a sudden shuddering halt And then we must face the media corps those once great storytellers who were regrettably bought out by the goons of commercialism News advertising now indistinguishable both feed us lies through shiny teeth On the rubble of their rotting deceit we will build a new transparent culture with a non commercial heart and soul We will resurrect truth and integrity This is
