becomes an injury to one s self It was from this monistic premise influenced by the teachings of Gandhi and Spinoza that Naess developed an ecological philosophy situating humans within the larger self of the ecosystems that contain us On this level plane of existence humans and nature are equal the natural world should not be subjugated to human want nor manipulated for human gain The flaw in shallow ecology according to Naess is its attempt to address the problems of nature within an industrialized capitalist framework It is not until we stop looking at the earth as a resource and come to regard it as an extension of our collective self that we will attain the deep understanding required for true meaningful sustainability When Naess passed away earlier this year at the age of 96 he died an optimist believing that humans were slowly beginning to see the way forward He was often corrected by journalists when he expressed hope for heading back in the direction of paradise by the 23rd century You mean the 21st they would reply No Naess corrected I am a short term pessimist and a long range optimist He predicted that in the centuries to come people including those in the developed West would suffer greatly as populations continue to swell and we stubbornly cling to our faith in technology It is not until we broaden our narrow conception of self to include the natural world that we will be able to perceive the scope of the chaos we have caused For that kind of vantage point Naess believed we have to keep climbing We have to slowly and painfully scale the path of truth until our ecological aesthetic changes There on a snow swept summit many hundreds of years from now when we

the renewable share of its electricity from 70 percent mostly hydro and geothermal to 90 percent by 2025 The country plans to cut per capita carbon emissions from transport in half by 2040 Beyond this New Zealand plans to expand its forested area by some 250 000 hectares by 2020 ultimately sequestering roughly 1 million tons of carbon per year We know from our analysis of global warming from the accelerating deterioration of the economy s ecological supports and from our projections of future resource use in China that the Western economic model the fossil fuel based automobile centered throwaway economy will not last much longer We need to build a new economy one that will be powered by renewable sources of energy that will have a diversified transport system and that will reuse and recycle everything We can describe this new economy in some detail The question is how to get from here to there before time runs out Can we reach the political tipping points that will enable us to cut carbon emissions before we reach the ecological tipping points where the melting of the Himalayan glaciers becomes irreversible Will we be able to halt the deforestation of the Amazon before it dries out becomes vulnerable to fire and turns into wasteland What if for example three years from now scientists announced that we have waited too long to cut carbon emissions and that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is irreversible How would the realization that we are responsible for a coming 7 meter 23 foot rise in sea level and hundreds of millions of refugees from rising seas affect us How would it affect our sense of self our sense of who we are It could trigger a fracturing of society along generational lines like

  • What Will Replace the Brand? - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
happiness comfort and security is over For nearly a century brands acted as the definitive medium through which we experienced capitalism A brand s strength came from its ability to transmit a consistently identical static message Brands gave our reality a strong foundation symbols dotting our mental and physical landscapes that we could use to navigate our way through life But then brands began to show their age They started to rust chip degrade fall apart All of a sudden brands cease to be the impenetrable fortresses of consumer relations we thought they were and anyone could start a brand and do whatever he wanted with it Gen X created flexible brands that catered to subterranean audiences prompting Gen Y to embrace the idea of the personal brand individuality expressed through a marketable system of identifiable signifiers And so these slick little icons towering planets that represented entire universes of product experience were slowly deconstructed to a point of irrelevance Our daily lives are now inundated by a torrent of dead images and meaningless symbols from a bygone era leaving us with one very important question to answer What s next Facebook Twitter Google Pinterest Hey President Obama Revolutionary Spirit

  • Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
eyeglasses leggings and a flannel shirt makes her a hipster I m not comfortable with that term she replies Her friend adds with just a flicker of menace in her eyes Yeah I don t know you shouldn t use that word it s just Offensive No it s just well if you don t know why then you just shouldn t even use it Ok so what are you girls doing tonight after this party Ummm We re going to the after party Gavin McInnes one of the founders of Vice who recently left the magazine is considered to be one of hipsterdom s primary architects But in contrast to the majority of concerned media types McInnes whose Dos and Don ts commentary defined the rules of hipster fashion for over a decade is more critical of those doing the criticizing I ve always found that word hipster is used with such disdain like it s always used by chubby bloggers who aren t getting laid anymore and are bored and they re just so mad at these young kids for going out and getting wasted and having fun and being fashionable he says I m dubious of these hypotheses because they always smell of an agenda Punks wear their tattered threads and studded leather jackets with honor priding themselves on their innovative and cheap methods of self expression and rebellion B boys and b girls announce themselves to anyone within earshot with baggy gear and boomboxes But it is rare if not impossible to find an individual who will proclaim themself a proud hipster It s an odd dance of self identity adamantly denying your existence while wearing clearly defined symbols that proclaims it He s 17 and he lives for the scene a girl whispers in my ear as I sneak a photo of a young kid dancing up against a wall in a dimly lit corner of the after party He s got a flipped out do it yourself haircut skin tight jeans leather jacket a vintage punk tee and some popping high tops Shoot me he demands walking up cigarette in mouth striking a pose and exhaling He hits a few different angles with a firmly unimpressed expression and then gets a bit giddy when I show him the results Rad thanks he says re focusing on the music and submerging himself back into the sweaty funk of the crowd where he resumes a jittery head bobble with a little bit of a twitch The dance floor at a hipster party looks like it should be surrounded by quotation marks While punk disco and hip hop all had immersive intimate and energetic dance styles that liberated the dancer from his her mental states be it the head spinning b boy or violent thrashings of a live punk show the hipster has more of a joke dance A faux shrug shuffle that mocks the very idea of dancing or at its best illustrates a non committal
