have seen a kind of continual series of tiny 68s The uprisings against state socialism that began in Tiananmen Square and culminated in the collapse of the Soviet Union began that way though they were quickly diverted into the culmination of that capitalist recuperation of the spirit of 60s rebellion that has come to be known as neoliberalism After the Zapatista world revolution they called it the Fourth World War began in 94 such mini 68s began happening so thick and fast the process almost seemed to have become institutionalized Seattle Genoa Cancun Quebec Hong Kong And insofar as it was indeed institutionalized by global networks the Zapatistas had helped set up it was on the basis of a kind of small a anarchism based on principles of decentralized direct democracy and direct action The prospect of facing a genuine global democratic movement seems to have so frightened the US authorities in particular that they went into veritable panic mode There is of course a traditional antidote to the threat of mass mobilization from below You start a war It doesn t really matter who the war is against The point is just to have one preferably on as wide a scale as possible In this case the US government had the extraordinary advantage of a genuine pretext a ragtag crew of hitherto largely ineffective right wing Islamists who for once in history had attempted a wildly ambitious terrorist scheme and actually pulled it off Rather than simply track down those responsible the US began throwing billions of dollars of armament at anything in sight Ten years later the resulting paroxysm of imperial overstretch appears to have undermined the very basis of the American Empire What we are now witnessing is the process of that empire s collapse It only makes sense then that the World Revolution of 2011 should have begun as a rebellion against US client states in much the same way as the rebellions that brought down Soviet power began in places like Poland and Czechoslovakia The wave of rebellion soon spread across the Mediterranean from North Africa to Southern Europe and then much more uncertainly at first across the Atlantic to New York But once it had in a matter of weeks it had exploded everywhere At this point it s extremely difficult to predict how far all this will ultimately go Truly historical events after all consist of precisely those moments that could not have been predicted beforehand Could we be in the presence of a fundamental shift like 1789 a shift not only in global power relations but in our elementary political common sense It s impossible to say but there are reasons to be optimistic Let me end by listing three First in no previous world revolution has the main center of mobilization been in the imperial center itself Great Britain the great imperial power of the 19th century was barely affected by the uprisings of 1789 and 1848 In the same way

  • The Long Road to Revolution - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
the habit of thought that defines the world as a totalizing system in which every element takes on significance only in relation to the other elements tends almost invariably to lead to a view of revolutions as cataclysmic ruptures How after all could one totalizing system be replaced by an entirely new one other than by some cataclysmic event Thus we interpret human history as a series of revolutions the Neolithic Revolution the Industrial Revolution the Information Revolution et cetera and the political dream becomes to somehow take control of the process We strive to get to the point at which we can cause a rupture of revolutionary magnitude a momentous breakthrough that will occur as the direct result of collective will The Revolution properly speaking It s not surprising that when radical thinkers find themselves incapable of causing a rupture in their own political reality they quickly try to identify examples of revolutions happening elsewhere This phenomenon has grown to such a point that French philosopher Paul Virilio theorizes that rupture is our permanent state of being I m not making an appeal for the flat rejection of imaginary totalities assuming that such a rejection is even possible which it probably isn t imaginary totalities are likely a necessary tool of human thought Rather I ask that we bear in mind that these totalities are just that tools of thought For instance there s great value in being able to ask ourselves After the revolution how will we organize mass transportation or Who will fund scientific research or even Do you think there will be fashion magazines once the revolution comes Our present understanding of the concept is a useful mental hinge but we must also recognize that unless we are willing to massacre hundreds of thousands of people the revolution will almost certainly not be the clean break with the past that our current definition implies So what will it be Revolution on a worldwide scale will unfold at a very slow pace It is beginning to happen What we need to do in order to recognize this fact is to stop thinking of revolution as a singular thing as one great cataclysmic break Instead we should be asking ourselves what revolutionary action is Revolutionary action is any collective action that rejects and therefore confronts some form of power or domination and in doing so reconstitutes social relations Revolutionary action does not necessarily have to be so grandiose that it aims only to topple governments Something so small as attempting to create autonomous communities in the face of opposing power would for instance be revolutionary acts If we accept this definition then we accept the fact that quiet revolutions have been occurring all over the world Rural communities in Madagascar reacted to the depredations of French colonialism by gradually adopting the ethos that it is wrong for adults to give one another orders The Malagasy then practiced sustained passive resistance to the point where the postcolonial state largely

  • The Machinery of Hopelessness - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
El Salvador and Nicaragua and the global justice movement by the War on Terror We can now see the latter war for what it was a declining power s doomed effort to make its peculiar combination of bureaucratic war machines and speculative financial capitalism into a permanent global condition We are clearly on the verge of another mass resurgence of the popular imagination It shouldn t be that difficult Most of the elements are already there The problem is that our perceptions have been twisted into knots by decades of relentless propaganda and we are no longer able to see them Consider the term communism Rarely has a term come to be so utterly reviled The standard line which we accept more or less unthinkingly is that communism means state control of the economy History has shown us that this impossible utopian dream simply doesn t work Thus capitalism however unpleasant is the only remaining option If two people are fixing a pipe and one says hand me the wrench the other doesn t say and what do I get for it In fact communism really just means any situation where people act according to this principle from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs This is in fact the way pretty much everyone acts if they are working together If for example two people are fixing a pipe and one says hand me the wrench the other doesn t say and what do I get for it This is true even if they happen to be employed by Bechtel or Citigroup They apply the principles of communism because they re the only ones that really work This is also the reason entire cities and countries revert to some form of rough and ready communism in the wake of natural disasters or economic collapse markets and hierarchical chains of command become luxuries they can t afford The more creativity is required and the more people have to improvise at a given task the more egalitarian the resulting form of communism is likely to be That s why even Republican computer engineers trying to develop new software ideas tend to form small democratic collectives It s only when work becomes standardized and boring think production lines that becomes possible to impose more authoritarian even fascistic forms of communism But the fact is that even private companies are internally organized according to communist principles Communism is already here The question is how to further democratize it Capitalism in turn is just one possible way of managing communism It has become increasingly clear that it s a rather disastrous one Clearly we need to be thinking about a better alternative preferably one that does not systematically set us all at each others throats Capitalism is not just a poor system for managing communism it also periodically falls apart All this makes it much easier to understand why capitalists are willing to pour such extraordinary resources into the machinery of

  • Where Do You Stand On Cuba? - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
dyed California blond His name is David Torrens and we are told he is very famous in Cuba I wonder what it would be like if my favorite musical artist regularly made appearances at our local hangout In Havana they have a different kind of advertising Instead of billboards selling fast food designer jewelry and beer there is graffiti promoting peace love and socialism This wall near the Museum of the Revolution says The moral of the revolution is still as high as the stars But one phrase seems to stand out amongst the rest Sociolismo o Muerto socialism or death Shauna asks Dixon about these unavoidable reminders of the way Cubans are supposed to think This is a phrase that to me is very significant says Dixon within it is a lot of energy I should fight for something But socialism is to encircle yourself with one way one mode one idea We don t progress here in Cuba because we are surrounded by this one idea one place a control of ideas And progress is a revolution of ideas This phrase Sociolismo o Muerto seems uncannily similar to Patrick Henry s cry during the US revolution Give me liberty or give me death and I find myself thinking about what it means to fight for something Deney Shauna and I sit on the walls of El Morro a fort across the bay from Havana where Deney has brought us so we can watch the sun set over the city he loves We watch as fishermen float in the bay and it is far too easy to imagine how tempting those rafts seem to the desperate In the 2007 fiscal year the US coastguard reported interdicting 2 868 Cubans attempting to reach Florida beaches So far in fiscal year
