ground you eventually realize that not every step you take is going to blow you up So long as you don t get complacent 6th October Edinburgh You see them firing at you and it s like a Mexican stand off But it s always an ambush so you get a fright to start with but you just deal with it You try not to think about it too much otherwise you get yourself wound up Are we making a difference One of my friends died and then there are all the boys who ve been injured It isn t worth that It s great being back but I d say I ve got a shorter fuse now I ended up arguing with my partner but it s the small things that can cause that It s a funny one There are small things that can get on your nerves Supermarkets are bad because there are bright colors and everyone walks about like lemmings It seems like people don t have any purpose here Photographer Lalage Snow embarked on an 8 month long project titled We Are The Not Dead featuring portraits of British soldiers before during and after their deployment in Afghanistan Snow captures the innocent expressions of these people transformed into gaunt sullen faces in less than a year The three panel juxtaposition allows the viewer to observe the physical changes a stationed soldier in a war zone goes through Time is sped up for these men and women under the beating sun amidst combat Regardless of age the kids that went in came back as adults with experiences beyond their years As weathered and worn as their skin or sunken faces may appear it s their dilated eyes that are the most telling Pinar www mymodernmet com

  • Bohol - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
formed a fortified community in the mountains From this people powered stronghold they proclaimed independence for Bohol Using their knowledge of the mountains and bold guerrilla tactics these warriors reclaimed more and more of the island from their Spanish oppressors Twenty consecutive Spanish governor generals tried to crush the resistance Each failed This was the first successful Filipino revolt under Spanish rule The Boholanos maintained their independence for 85 years the longest revolt in the nation s history Indigenous writer Thomas King says The truth about stories is that that s all we are He goes on to quote Nigerian writer Ben Okri We live stories that either give our lives meaning or negate it with meaninglessness If we change the stories we live quite possibly we change our lives In 1829 thousands of Spanish soldiers armed with artillery finally succeeded in violently crushing the revolt Yet for every free Boholano they murdered they could not kill the story their lives left behind The story of a people who fought and for three generations created for themselves a life free from slavery free from racism and free from sexual violence at the hands of their oppressors For many generations more this story of resistance has inspired us It was still being told two generations later as the people of the Philippines finally won their independence from the Spanish It was still being told five generations later as two million Filipinos peacefully gathered in the streets to successfully overthrow a 20 year dictatorship On that day in 1986 CBS anchorman Bob Simon reported We Americans like to think we taught the Filipinos democracy Well tonight they are teaching the world The lesson was embodied in the hand gesture that came to define that nonviolent revolution a hand raised in the air

bald Canadian prairies to reap canola And if you did what did you honestly think of their aspirations Were they lowbrow Were they selling themselves short Were they limiting their unique individual potential Who among you wants to be up from dawn to dusk at the mercy of earth s natural systems living on faith amongst secular technologies covered in mud all the time no time for art music or self expression These questions might be rude but they re essential to ask in order to get to the heart of the contradictory relationship we have with farming in the modern age it s the most basic building block of our existence but it isn t valued Aspiring to be only a farmer to work the land has been the bane of modernity s existence since development theorists first began spinning tales of how to get to the future When exposed to the glitz of modernity most people desperately try to escape the fields leaving only Monsanto in the countryside The mass migrations to mega slum cities in sub Saharan Africa India and Latin America are a testament to the continuous pull of opportunity As Daniel Quinn argues even the earliest folks tales of Western civilization like the Bible s Cain and Abel pit the entrepreneurial proto urbanite against the satisfied herdsman the latter murdered by his forward looking bother our first modern superstar Modern humankind is urban Nature is a place to visit Reading early development texts like Daniel Lerner s 1958 The Passing of Traditional Society you learn that working the land the primary occupation in traditional society is to economic progress what religion once was to the enlightenment backward irrational unimaginative slow old Traditional society is non participant it deploys people by kinship into communities isolated from each other and from a center without an urban rural division of labor it develops few needs requiring economic interdependence lacking the bonds of interdependence people s horizons are limited by locale and their decisions involve only other known people in known institutions Today in the industrialized world with the exception of a fraction of the agricultural economy there are no more farms only factories And communities are defined as groups of individuals a hopeful oxymoron at best The impact of this detachment from our agrarian roots is as ecological and social as it is psychological Removed from our billions of years old evolutionary environment in a matter of a few millennia and in some cases centuries and even decades the loss of natural interaction has turned into a banal impulse to destroy that is as ecologist Bill Rees says to turn everything around us into ourselves In religious terms you could say we ve gained the world but lost our souls In secular terms we ve reached modernity but lost our minds Mental health is now the most debilitating medical condition in the United States responsible for more lost work hours than any other affliction Not far behind are

people s democracy That project was never completed Occupy s intensity was not sustained long enough to master the next step acting together at the same moment to target the same enemy everywhere at once to take down a global enemy of The People like Goldman Sachs and send a chill down the spine of every other megacorp in the world Now the next challenge in the long march to democracy is before us At Adbusters we have struggled to imagine how a global uprising could crystallize into a united front In our brainstorming sessions one likely scenario we re thinking through is the birth of global political party that sweeps into Parliament in countries with fair elections and pulls off insurrections in countries without fair elections A World Party that embodies the anarchist principles of our ancient uprising for people s democracy a global front that respects local autonomy while also learning how to finally implement the concrete global bottom up solutions like economic degrowth a Robin Hood Tax and a True Cost market regime to the spiritual ecological and political catastrophes plaguing humanity Humanity s collective unconscious is yearning for an uprising that unites our species against Earth s avowed enemy the corporatists But this time around the revolt will crystallize around memes and not leaders There will be no Mao Stalin Lenin or Pol Pot only hashtags that flicker carrying each wave of humanity forward Our generation s great task is to find words in every language for and to fight in our own way for this new universalist leaderless politics a hybrid blue green black politics that mobilizes all of The People toward liberty equality and community With this perspective the global uprisings look different The various movements within the movement no longer appear as contradictions but as aspects of the same emerging blue green black vision the why of our global revolution Blue the color of intellect and imagination stands for mental environmentalism and our party s commitment to internet democracy political transparency and personal anonymity We stand with Anonymous WikiLeaks the whistle blowers and the Pirate parties of Europe Blue is our spiritual insurrection the revolution in our mind and inner reality It is our quest to steward the mental environment by balancing the rational intellect with the irrational imagination in politics and life and culture A distinctly Blue psycho politics gels a range of Left and Right organizations and concerns into a fighting force Equally proponents of commercial free schools promoting open source software circumventing censorship systemic declassification of our governments strict laws upholding public anonymity liberating and de commercializating information the umbrella concern is with restoring our cultural and psychological health Blue warriors vow to change the way information flows and to shake up the production of meaning in our society Green the hue of earth and immortality stands for the four decade strong resistance movement against environmental degradation which we must win for a sane sustainable future Green is our collective
