spectators into politically engaged participants With nothing more than a commitment to consensus based transparency twinkling fingers that signaled assent mic checks that amplified our voices and an ethos of mutual respect and hope for the future Occupy sparked a global democracy moment Now as the movement enters the spring after a tough existential winter many of the core principles are being debated anew In the following discussion excerpted from a public email debate three of the founding Zuccottis respond to a call for Occupy to adopt a leadership model The strength of the Occupy movement lies in its horizontality It is through consensus that people are heard individually and collectively This is not a myth as you so elegantly put it but a reality In our daily lives we are never heard Whether in school or at work or in electoral politics our voices are silenced The Occupy movement gave people a voice For you to suggest we elect leaders and adopt a hierarchy is to strip away the very essence of the movement In consensus one blocks if they feel that a decision would be of serious moral or ethical concern and challenge the very foundation of the group A person blocking walks away from the group if such a move is made Leaders in a leaderless movement would cause me to block Marisa Holmes is a 25 year old filmmaker Prior to Occupy she documented the Tahrir Uprising in Cairo Marisa is one of the most well respected founding members of the Zuccotti Park encampment that launched Occupy Wall Street A member of the facilitation working group Marisa was also one of the chief architects of the move toward a spokescouncil of working groups model that works in tandem with the general assembly FROM Adbusters 101 Regime

  • Arundhati Roy - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
the prosecutors of these wars will contain within itself the seeds of destruction not just for adivasis but eventually for the human race That s why we need a real and urgent conversation between all those political formations that are resisting this war The day capitalism is forced to tolerate non capitalist societies in its midst and to acknowledge limits in its quest for domination the day it is forced to recognize that its supply of raw material will not be endless is the day when change will come If there is any hope for the world at all it does not live in climate change conference rooms or in cities with tall buildings It lives low down on the ground with its arms around the people who go to battle every day to protect their forests their mountains and their rivers because they know that the forests the mountains and the rivers protect them The first step toward re imagining a world gone terribly wrong would be to stop the annihilation of those who have a different imagination an imagination that is outside of capitalism as well as communism An imagination which has an altogether different understanding of what constitutes happiness and fulfillment To gain this philosophical space it is necessary to concede some physical space for the survival of those who may look like the keepers of our past but who may really be the guides to our future To do this we have to ask our rulers Can you leave the waters in the rivers the trees in the forest Can you leave the bauxite in the mountain If they say they cannot then perhaps they should stop preaching morality to the victims of their wars Arundhati Roy is a celebrated novelist This article is excerpted from

  • Tarek El Diwany - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
how William Paterson first Director of the Bank of England put it in 1694 The more paper receipts bankers printed the more loans they could make and the more interest they could earn It was therefore in their interest to create as much money as possible But this policy had dire consequences for the rest of society The more money that was issued into circulation the more prices began to rise throughout the economy And because every unit of paper money was issued under a loan contract the indebtedness of society grew remorselessly over time If a banker called in the paper loans a vicious recession could easily result The political power that this gave to the banks was not lost on President Andrew Jackson In his farewell address of 1837 he accused the Bank of the United States of having done exactly this in an attempt to defeat his program on banking reform The distress and alarm which pervaded and agitated the whole country when the Bank of the United States waged war upon the people in order to compel them to submit to its demands cannot yet be forgotten The ruthless and unsparing temper with which whole cities and communities were oppressed individuals impoverished and ruined and a scene of cheerful prosperity suddenly changed into one of gloom and despondency ought to be indelibly impressed on the memory of the people of the United States If such was its power in time of peace what would it have been in a season of war with an enemy at your doors No nation but the free men sic of the United States could have come out victorious from such a contest yet if you had not conquered the government would have passed from the hands of the many to the few and this organized money power from its secret conclave would have dictated the choice of your highest officials and compelled you to make peace or war as best suited their own wishes If the banking classes favored men of similar inclinations with their loans of newly created money a small group of individuals could quickly and quietly amass great influence over the commercial and political life of the nation Today this is a reality that extends into media and academia with devastating consequences at the intellectual level Financial newspapers hesitate to publish material that is hostile to their largest source of advertising revenue and the huge volumes of research and commentary that pour forth from researchers in the banking sector are similarly slanted by financial pressures From cradle to grave the issues of money creation and usury therefore tend to remain in the background disguised by a terminology that is impenetrable to the lay person As John Kenneth Galbraith wrote in Money Whence it Came Where it Went The study of money above all other fields in economics is the one in which complexity is used to disguise the truth or to evade the truth not to reveal it Nations across the world have thereby come to accept that interest based debt is a normal fact of economic life For most in the paradoxically labeled rich world there is nothing dangerous or shameful in perpetual indebtedness Our parents advice to save for things that we want in life is now mocked as an old fashioned delusion Why save when the desire to consume can be satisfied now Materialist ideologies reinforce such attitudes substantially If there is no afterlife then surely we must try to enjoy this life as much as possible Yet the inexorable rise of debt makes the enjoyment of life a distant dream for much of humanity In the poorer countries the objective becomes mere survival if necessary by dint of politically spiked loan agreements In 1997 the United Nations Development Programme estimated that up to five million children die in Africa every year because of the pressures that debt service places upon national budgets Tanzania and Uganda were among many whose debt service payments exceeded the entire national budget for healthcare The consequences of developing country indebtedness are ecological in nature too For example the fastest deforesting countries in the world are among its most indebted as rainforests are sacrificed in order to earn the foreign exchange that will pay off creditors in the rich countries The model of borrowing funds at interest in order to invest and generate profit has now accumulated a long track record of failure in dealing with such problems A glance at IMF figures on developing country debt tells a story of ever climbing debt levels over five decades As for aid the entire package of assistance given by the developed countries to the developing word is typically less than a quarter of the debt service payments that flow in the opposite direction The widely trumpeted Heavily Indebted Poor Countries program of debt relief promoted by the IMF and the World Bank in 1996 required widespread austerity budgets of the kind rarely implemented in the West yet after more than a decade in operation only one nation out of 42 had been removed from the list of HIPC countries Underlying all of these problems is the practice of usury In Islam it is seen as fundamentally wrong for a financier to make a profit from a client even when that client s business is failing Instead the financier must share both the profits and the losses of those finances much like modern equity investors do This simple requirement ties together the interests of financier and clients in a way that interest based lending never can When a financier can only make a profit if the client makes a profit then the financier is much more careful about whom he finances In interest based finance those who wish to obtain loan finance are often those who have the most collateral to offer not those who have the best projects Poor people with good business ideas therefore tend to stay poor under

vodka comparing a dozen different varieties of heirloom carrots etc With every purchase we could pat ourselves on the backs for being so progressive and green and continue to deny our individual and collective responsibility for the impending collapse Although valet bicycle parking was available we arrived in our car from another part of town Judging by the parking situation so did the majority of customers Every vendor several dozen at least brought their merchandise in their own trucks from dozens or hundreds of kilometres away and set up their own gas powered generators to run their refrigeration and other accessories How is this any better for the planet than driving to the mall to shop at Walmart The whole thing just made me sick and I ended up fleeing in disgust and frustration I don t have children don t own a home take public transit to work every day but I have to admit that I am just as much a part of the problem as the SUV driving suburbanites with 2 3 children I am one of those hard working taxpayers that every political party in the Western world attempts to appeal to I spend my disposable income on travel technology entertainment and other useless crap I salve my conscience by attending protests when they are conveniently timed and located donating money to good causes and voting for the most progressive candidates or sometimes the lesser of two or three evils And by subscribing to Adbusters the lone voice of sanity in the wilderness of media bullshit Thank you so much for your existence Reading your magazine is always a painful but validating experience I look forward to every issue and I eagerly await Dec 19 a letter by Hilary Jones Vancouver Canada FROM Adbusters 120 Manifesto

  • On the Origins of Crisis - Adbusters | Journal of the mental environment
place and be ready to start the real war the one that was coming By the time Baghdad fell altogether we gathered enough weapons to fight for three years we estimated We gathered a lot of money also in the days of the looting A lot of the looting was organized by gangs We went to the heads of these gangs after the fall and demanded half of what they had taken for the cause They knew we were serious They knew that we had been gathering men and weapons and they did not argue with us In return for half the money we promised to leave them alone from then on We met again as planned at the same place There were a lot of arguments of course We had a lot of money and weapons and some in the group were getting greedy They wanted shares of money to support their families and so on Some in the group were putting forward ideas about forming an Islamic state led by an emir Others in the group like me were more concerned about coming up with attack strategies and getting started right away with strikes That meeting broke up without any firm decisions or directives but it didn t matter We had set things in motion with all the work we had done We had opened the field for anyone who wanted to fight Some in the group were putting forward ideas about forming an Islamic state led by an emir I decided along with a few close friends of mine to ignore all these political arguments and simply get started with what we meant to do fight the occupation Five of us planned our first operation a roadside bomb on Canal Street in Baghdad near a newly built American base To begin none of us had experience in explosives So we had to be taught how to make the device There was an Egyptian from al Qaeda who showed us how You mean from Osama bin Laden s followers in Pakistan and Afghanistan Yes He had come from Afghanistan through Pakistan and Iran to Iraq From our group we dedicated an engineer who took lessons from this Egyptian He was a typical Egyptian al Qaeda guy He had felt oppressed by the Egyptian government and had gone to join the fighters in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion there He had worked in Iraq in the oil fields in the 1970s however so he knew the place pretty well He knew the roads He knew the accent And he had come to Iraq for jihad after the Americans invaded After a few lessons from this Egyptian our engineer came back and we went about making the device We made it in a mosque one evening near the base just after evening prayers We took an old artillery shell and bored into the casing with a hand drill to reach the explosive material You have to drill very slowly You
