    establishment of a new AE prize for excellence in research The Adam Kondorosi Prize this prize of two parts has been set up by the generous patronage of Prof Eva Kondorosi in memory of her husband who was a significant contributor in the field of Plant sciences Nitrogen Fixation and microbiology The International award is under preparation with a junior prize to be given at the European Nitrogen Fixation Congress of Budapest 2016 and the senior AE prize to be awarded for the first time at the 29th AE annual conference in Budapest in 2017 As with all our annual conferences I encourage one of our Earth and Cosmic Sciences Section members to arrange a Geological field trip for anyone who is interested This year was no exception and it was a particular pleasure that my long time friend and colleague Prof dr Jörg Negendank organised a wonderful visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Geopark network site the Messel Pit fossil site This is a must see for anyone in the vicinity of Darmstadt Of course the visit was followed by a welcome and extensive local lunch This tradition will be continued in 2016 2017 and long beyond I was pleased to be invited to a major event in Kiev during September hosted at the Bogomoletz Institute for Physiology It was on Brain communication and was held to honour the 70th birthday of our most distinguished member Prof Oleg Krishtal a true pioneer of his field The event was supported in part from our 2015 Hubert Curien Fund for new initiatives and had a stellar international programme I was impressed not only by the quality and impact of past achievements at the Institute but also with the current researchers from the Eastern countries who are operating under very challenging conditions a feature specifically highlighted during an excellent session on European research opportunities and a presentation given by ERC Council member Prof Eva Kondorosi Hungary on the ERC scheme for Widening European Participation It will be a priority for my Presidency of the AE to develop and strengthen our links with Eastern Europe The community spirit of science and scholarship transcends geopolitical boundaries These rather delicate issues were raised in two television interview sessions that I took part in and also alongside our Ukrainian host and other AE members in a face to face with the Research Minister of the Ukraine I want to thank Alex Verkhratsky Manchester Dmitri Rusakov UCL Ole Petersen Cardiff and our Executive Secretary for enabling the event and Nana Voltenko who was the local lynchpin We really do need to support more events in the Ukraine and other Eastern states and I want your ideas and proposals which are always welcome On the European science policy and advice front Our collaboration with ALLEA FEAM euroCASE and EASAC continues to develop We are currently defining the detailed workpackages needed for a response to a targeted call under Horizon 2020 This project will provide the European Commission and

    University Governance Impeding of Facilitating Creativity The group are also planning a second AE China dialogue event at Shanghai Jio Tong University in collaboration with our member Prof Wang Ning Also in connection with our engagement on science and policy we were founder members of EASAC The European Academies Science Advisory Council providing both a President of that organisation Brian Heap and continuing members of both the standing panels and expert working groups That organisation has and continues to publish an excellent series of authoritative papers on important science into policy topics but from a strictly scientific perspective So we have not been absent from this landscape in past years Since the abolition of the position of Chief Scientific Advisor the Commission have been working on a new model for provision of independent scientific advice for European policy I am pleased to report that a cooperation agreement was signed earlier this year between us and ALLEA FEAM Federation of European Academies of Medicine EURO Case the science advisory body of the European Academies of Engineering and EASAC see above Since then a number of meetings of the Presidents of the group of five organisations and the Commission have taken place There is strong support for this group in the Commission to establish a new independent platform for the provision of coordinated advice to the Commission The system and process will utilise the already existing structures that are present amongst the group members and will facilitate a better and more integrated approach to ensure that that the Commission receives the best quality advice that covers both the scientific and the social and economic aspects including the other humanities of the state of the art in an fully integrated way A full proposal for the funding of this new platform is under development and it is hoped that the new organisation will become operational in 2016 It will be imperative that you the members are willing to play an active part in this new mechanism by engaging in expert panels reviews and the other activities Without your expertise and support this will not be a success and the Academies will have collectively thrown away a major opportunity Finally on this subject I am pleased to report that our new cooperation is already yielding fruit I have agreed with the President of ALLEA Prof dr Guenter Stock MAE that we will plan and hold more joint events and in particular share a common programme every two years with a merging of our annual conferences We are hoping therefore to start with and event in 2016 and to share the AE 2017 annual conference which is planned to take place in Budapest Whilst these developments have been taking place many other events and activities are ongoing both through the Hubs and more generally The Board recently took part in a regional members discussion meeting in Bergen organised by the Hub Jan Vaagen Lászlo Csernai and Vidar Totland and where a number of regional speakers

    and gratified to hear that Prof Harm Pinkster section chair for Classics and Oriental Studies recently organised a meeting with our other humanities section chairs to discuss how to better coordinate and stimulate the AE humanities and social sciences especially with regard to engaging in European policy topics The Board is looking forward to hearing the outcomes and the group s recommendation in Wroclaw on 19 20 March Secondly 19 20 March is an important date Not only will the Board meet but we will hold our first ever Regional AE members discussion forum I am hopeful that around 25 30 members from the Visegrad countries and other countries will attend This is an informal opportunity to forge new contacts and collaborations and to discuss how the Hub can meet the needs of our members in the coming two years The event will also be where members will meet local partners of the Hub and I will also take the opportunity to meet with the Mayor and to sign the renewal of our Hub agreement Whilst I am talking about the Eastern countries AE members I am pleased to be able to announce that our members based in the Republic of Serbia have organised themselves into a formal Serbian Chapter of the AE I would like to thank Profs Djordje Sijacki and Mirjana Radovic Markovic for agreeing to be the inaugural President and General Secretary for the new Chapter We are all looking forward to seeing proposals for new initiatives and a strengthening of our membership across that region However you may not be aware that this is actually our second Chapter We have a very very long standing Russia Club of AE members the chief amongst them being Prof Vladimir Skulachev the founding and continuing key organiser of the annual AE Russia Prizes scheme for young Russian scholars A similar but larger scheme to the annual Burgen Scholars awards but with some additions Thirdly In January I visited Cardiff University in Wales at the invitation of Prof Ole Petersen Trustee and class chair for the life sciences sections to deliver a lecture in the Cardiff School of Biosciences the Sir Martin Evans Building During that visit I was able to meet with a number of regional AE members and with the Vice Chancellor We discussed ongoing plans for the opening of a third AE regional centre Although details are not yet completed I can report here that one of the priorities will be for the new centre to seek to re organise co ordinate and stimulate our Academy life sciences class of sections This new centre will have a somewhat different approach to that of our existing Knowledge Hubs As the practical detail emerges you will be kept fully informed including with an opportunity to discuss the new centre at our Darmstadt Annual Business Meeting of members on 7 September by the way please look at the event webpage http www ae2015 eu registration for Darmstadt will open in

    organise a one day meeting of AE members to include our members from the wider Visegrád region and other Central and Eastern European countries The meeting will allow us to develop a regional activity programme and seek input on our new development strategy We also hope to appoint a regional Hub advisory group based on AE members who actively participate in that meeting Further details will be announced early in 2015 Thirdly Congratulations also go to our Barcelona Hub team for organising the second Disputatio event and a linked Mediterranean workshop Information about the event can be found on the Barcelona Hub website http barcelona acadeuro org I would especially like to thank The United National University Institute on Globalisation Culture and Mobility for hosting the Disputatio debate at the wonderful Sant Pau Art Nouveau site in central Barcelona and the Institut d Estudis Catalans for hosting the Mediterranean symposium My personal thanks to the Cosmo Caixa and the Catalunya regional government for their patronage I would urge members to look at the Barcelona Hub webpages for future activity and also to contact them with ideas for events or requests to hold meetings in the Hub facilities Fourthly you should have seen the text of a recent AE submission concerning the proposed cuts to the Horizon 2020 budget This has been received well If you missed it you can read the text via the AE website Our member Pieter Emmer also recently attended a Commission information event concerning the lack of input of the Social Sciences and Humanities community into plans for the research funding calls of H2020 This has stimulated our Humanities and Social Sciences Section chairs into action and by invitation from Section Chair Harm Pinkster they are planning a meeting in February to discuss setting up a standing expert panel of the AE to better co ordinate policy responses on these and other issues for the AE I urge members of these sections to contact your section chairs and engage in this valuable initiative Contact information for your Section chairs can be found at our website Now for two key announcements Number 1 Proposed improvements to the nominations election system for membership During 2013 14 my predecessor as President Lars Walløe and the Board set up a panel under the chairmanship of Ole Petersen to review our Section structure governance and especially the nominations process for electing new members of the AE in order to stimulate an increased engagement of the memership Our current Section structure and the nominations system are more or less as originally set up over 25 years ago A review was therefore long overdue That group made a number of recommendations that were discussed in detail by the Section chairs at a special meeting in Barcelona and were agreed by Council An announcement was made at the AGM of members The main recommendation was to create FOUR CLASSES each with a class chair Existing Sections will be grouped into one of these classes

  • Academy of Europe: Post election statement
    research training one of the greatest challenges of the coming decades In my own field of science Earth Sciences Academia Europaea has served as the catalyst in setting the stage for many cross border research initiatives in Europe In this spirit I have myself as Section chair under the auspices of AE promoted with the Section the creation of the pan European collaborative research programme TOPO EUROPE now in existence for 10 years which has generated research opportunities for close to 100 young researchers from all over Europe attracting over 30 Million Euro of funding for collaborative multidisciplinary research with great societal relevance in areas such as natural hazards and energy resources Promoting scientific excellence and seeing it spread over the whole of Europe thereby making Europe a more attractive place to be for future researchers in a world of strong competition is another key priority I have been very happy to contribute actively to this through my membership of the Scientific Council of the ERC a body perceived widely as the flagship for identifying and selecting scientific research in a fully bottom up spirit Linking scientific excellence to innovation for the mutual benefit of both of them is another prime challenge especially for Europe Based on my experience as member and chair of ERC s working group for industrial relationships and innovation which developed the ERC Proof of Concept scheme I envisage a pro active role also here for Academia Europaea I have also recently been honoured to be appointed as a Vice President of the ERC effective from 1 January 2015 As promoter of close to 70 PhD students from 20 different nationalities including many from Central and Eastern Europe I have always been very much impressed by the drive and the self organising capacity of young researchers It is also in this context that I am very pleased with the initiative of a group of ERC starting grantees to create the Young Academy of Europe under its first president Andre Mischke I am very happy I have been able in my capacity as ERC Council member and Vice President of Academia Europaea to facilitate the creation of this Young Academy and its affiliation to Academia Europaea Under my Presidency we will work to support and build this younger base of European excellence The creation of the regional knowledge hubs is another novel development spreading the organization of activities of Academia Europaea further all over Europe The Wroclaw knowledge hub has been operational now for almost three years It has a strong portfolio of new activities and regional links especially in the humanities and the organization of the 25th Jubilee Academia Europaea annual conference last year The staff there are working hard and will continue to get our support The Barcelona knowledge hub has started more recently its activity preparing a range of high profile events and links and has just delivered a wonderful annual assembly A strong calendar of events is planned In 2014 we have seen
