    News of Jesus Christ The Kingdom of God is the expectation of faith When God s timing is right Jesus Christ will return to exercise justice and to definitely establish His Kingdom A Protestant Church In the wake of the Protestant Reformation The Mennonite Brethren Church adheres to the three following principles Scriptures only the Bible is our sole authority in matters of faith and practice It teaches us how to live before God Everything must be evaluated in the light of the Scriptures It carries supreme authority over human and ecclesiastical power Grace only Salvation comes completely and solely from the grace of God without human merit Salvation cannot be earned but can only be received as a gift from God God extends pardon to humans not on personal merit but on the basis of Jesus Christ s work on the cross Faith only The grace of God is accessible to humans through faith only in Christ without consideration of works works are not means to receive salvation but the result of salvation Through their good works believers express their gratitude to God for the gift of salvation they have received An Anabaptist Church The Mennonite Brethren have been known throughout history to distinguish themselves from other Christian confessional groups by certain characteristics Baptism upon confession of faith The ordinance of baptism is practiced uniquely on adults who freely and voluntarily profess their faith in Jesus Christ We believe that it is more logical and more biblical that baptism be administered following the confession of faith in Christ rather than before Baptism is an exterior symbol of our conversion a sign that salvation has been received Discipleship in response to the grace of God Faith in Christ results in a serious transformation of life and a sincere commitment to respect all the teachings of Jesus Faith has practical social and ethical consequences A Covenant Community Faith implies adhesion to the life of a local Church which is a gathering of believers who freely profess Jesus Christ through baptism The Church is a community of believers that is a group of people who meet together voluntarily and share a common faith A theological and ethical framework Spiritual health and the testimony of the Church in the world are preserved by a moral framework just but infused with grace that encourages the believer to remain faithful to God and in communion with the Church A fraternal and caring community A true Christian community is concerned with the well being of each of its members The Church is a fraternal friendly place a place of compassion and support for one another Members of the community seek to invest themselves in the lives of others Separation of Church and State The Church is free and not associated with civil power The Church claims religious liberty and resists state interference in religious matters This does not nevertheless exclude dialogue and cooperation between Church and State in communal efforts to further the well being of

    and mission Our vision Our vision is a description of how we see the services of The Quebec Association of Mennonite Brethren Churches AEFMQ It is the expression of our expectations for the future that lies just beyond the horizon of our present stage of strategic planning Five years from now we shall be able to ascertain if our Churches and the agencies of the Association AEFMQ will be better focused in better health and development and will serve God and their beneficiaries with passion and a renewed zeal for their Christian mission Our mission A statement of mission is a condensed version of the strategic objectives of the Association AEFMQ It proves its value as it accomplishes these objectives Usually one sentence adequately resumes the statement of mission and identifies the areas of orientation the beneficiaries and the sites of operation The Administrative body of the Association may review the statement yearly The statement may be edited from time to time to reflect any alterations deemed necessary as needs and possibilities change The mission of the Association AEFMQ is to contribute to the development of the Mennonite Brethren Church in the greater Montreal area and thus establish an Evangelical

    contextually in order to interpret and apply them to our own context See addendum 2 three schools of theological thought 4 We value unity and theological diversity We are grounded in the Scriptures acknowledge the importance of building on clear theological premises we do however accept differences of opinion in our Churches particularly on problematic and controversial issues Internal disagreement should not however result in tension and division We encourage dialogue respect and freedom of conscience rather than rigid interpretations and positions See addendum 3 Our Confession of faith and its place in our Churches 5 We value social and cultural relevance We continually seek to renew ourselves and to adapt to today s culture We may even re invent ourselves always remaining true to Scripture in order to remain relevant in our Christian witness We seek to develop a Christian perspective on the issues of the day 6 We value human relationships and Christian Community We consider the Quebec Association of Mennonite Brethren Churches AEFMQ as a large spiritual family where we value each human being and cherish the relationships we have one with another We would like to be known by our love our hospitality our sense of respect our conciliatory attitude and the unity of our communities We believe in the importance of building clear and useful structures that favour positive interpersonal relationships See addendum 4 The Structural Model of Our Provincial Association 7 We value an articulate intelligent and balanced expression of our faith We encourage an authentic well balanced and intelligent faith not only in our discourse but also in practice The laity and plurality of today s society are reason to express our Christian faith in an intelligent respectful and tolerant spirit 8 We value collegial and shared leadership We believe in shared responsibilities and shared authority We value the abilities of listening teamwork mutual consultation and confidence in one another We wish to encourage professional leadership based on integrity transparency and service 9 We value theological and biblical training We believe that biblical and theological training will develop qualified leaders with a deep knowledge of the Scriptures a critical spirit a well articulated thinking process and a passion for the faith and for Christian mission This biblical and theological training should when possible include studies in human sciences to help leaders gain a greater understanding of the human condition 10 We value a holistic comprehension of mission Evangelism proclamation and Social involvement compassion are not in opposition both are integral aspects of the mission of the Church We seek to both proclaim and to live out the Gospel We recognize that the Church is a community with a mission and as such must be directed to the outside and not toward the interior 11 We value inter confessional cooperation We serve God frankly and openly in a spirit of collaboration with other Christian faith groups We reject competition and isolationism and we refuse to depreciate the traditions of other churches Our greatest desire
