widely I found examples just now that range from ALL teachers starting at Step 0 to districts offering up to 10 years of service credit for placement purposes The more openings a district typically has in comparison to number of applicants in general the more lenient their initial placement will be Districts with long established teachers and lower turnover will in general have negotiated agreements that allow fewer numbers of years This does provide a problem for these districts in offering competitive salaries for hard to fill positions In my opinion you are not likely to be able to negotiate placement You can try I suppose but it may not be worth it It would be better to choose a district that is willing to reward you to the higher end of the service spectrum but still follow their negotiated agreement guidelines In addition there is a statutory limitation at play for teachers new to Alaska It is based on the highest earned degree AS 14 20 220 School Experience For Salary Scales http tinyurl com k4k2kaa This can be seen directly reflected in some district negotiated agreements Here is a snippet of BSSD s most recent one that follows the statute for Bachelor s and Master s degree holders It allows up to ten years for a Doctorate degree but this is not governed by the statute BSSD Negotiated Agreement http www bssd org docs negotiated agreement pdf Hope this helps Others may very well have more inside knowledge than I do with how this works in practice but in my experience the districts I ve worked for have stuck to the placement guidelines Regards John Johncn Posts 165 Joined Sun Feb 09 2014 11 05 am Top Re salary negotiations by ethetedave Thu Mar 05 2015 7 57 am Hi John Thank you for your anticipated response I trust your judgment on this matter and as always will heed your advice Best Dave ethetedave Posts 13 Joined Sun Sep 14 2014 11 59 am Top Re salary negotiations by lauren burch Wed Mar 11 2015 7 57 pm Hello We do offer some moving expenses for some sites that are harder to fill Other than that it is the negotiated agreement Lauren Burch Southeast Island School District lauren burch Posts 18 Joined Tue Feb 17 2015 4 17 pm Top Re salary negotiations by ks1 Sun Mar 15 2015 12 19 pm Some districts offer a bonus to special education teachers usually when there is a huge shortage However the sped shortage in AK does not seem to be as severe as in the past so I don t know of any districts currently offering bonuses I believe last year Mat su offered one I can t find any this year If anyone knows of a special educator bonus in an AK district please post I don t think you can negotiate salary but you might be able to get moving expenses and housing ks1 Posts 1 Joined
