    kayak up sections of the Salinas River Today you hardly see any water That gnawing feeling is justified Saltwater intrusion from the nearby Pacific is creeping into overdrawn aquifers Shallower wells are beginning to dry up resulting in a year long waiting list to drill a new one We know because ALBA is on that list The well on our main property was dug 40 years ago at a depth 300 feet about one third that of newly dugs wells On our second property a domestic well went dry last year which leaves us feeling like our whole operation is hanging in the balance We are on the brink in another sense Hotter summers in recent years not only increase the need for irrigation but also challenge the viability of our farmers main crop strawberries Heat and humidity put pest pressure on strawberry plants straining plant health and reducing yields ALBA alumnus Florentino Collazo tried strawberry farming in Chualar just four miles south of ALBA where it tends to be a couple degrees warmer The plants started producing early but sputtered in mid summer He says Some strawberry farmers have begun pulling out of Chualar and it is very hard to grow the crop there in the summer especially if you need to pick the fruit close to ripe for farmers markets The berries have a very short shelf life Though slightly cooler at ALBA s farm we are wondering how long the conditions will support strawberries should the drought endure The effects of drought are felt in winter too The lack of rain diminishes the quality of cover crops which ironically are grown in the off season to help the soil retain and utilize moisture in warmer months Moreover winter crops that are normally grown with rainfall have needed
