    Louis Hugo Francescutti CMA President She is truly deserving of the CMA Medal of Honour which recognizes personal contributions to the advancement of medical research and education I was surprised and humbled to receive this award especially because such remarkable people as Roméo Dallaire Peter Lougheed and Rick Hansen are previous recipients said Juliet Guichon It is a great privilege to help professionals elected officials and institutions identify children s best interests and work together to achieve them A graduate of Yale University she earned two law degrees at Oxford University and a doctoral degree in law at the University of Toronto After teaching law at the University of Brussels she and her family relocated to her home town of Calgary Professor Guichon has authored several academic articles presented at academic conferences and produced a book The Right to Know One s Origins The Best Interests of Children of Assisted Human Reproduction She has been an assistant professor of law and ethics at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary since 2012 Guichon is a frequent contributor to public debate on health and ethics issues She was invited by the Standing Committees on Health of both the House of Commons and the Senate to testify on public hearings on Canada s Assisted Human Reproduction Act She founded two child health advocacy groups that convinced 12 Canadian school boards to reverse their decisions to ban in school administration of the HPV vaccine She is the recipient of the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine s Social Accountability Award the Canadian Public Health Association s National Public Health Hero Award as well as two awards from the University of Calgary Medical Student Association Award for Young Leaders Student Category Peter J Gill Dr Peter Gill co founded and developed PedsCases a medical education website that provides pediatric resources for undergraduate students The tool includes more than 25 podcasts that have been downloaded by individuals from 150 countries While in medical school at the University of Alberta he won a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford 2009 13 where he earned a doctor of philosophy in primary health care and a master of science in evidence based health care He graduated from the MD PhD program at the University of Alberta in May 2014 and recently started pediatrics residency training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto He plans to be a pediatrician and clinician scientist Dr Gill s focus on improving the quality of care for children has been widely recognized In 2010 he received a Leaders of Tomorrow Award from the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Foundation in 2012 he received the IODE War Memorial Scholarship Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee and in 2014 he received the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Rising Star Research Award I am extremely humbled to be selected for this prestigious award from the CMA recognizing my commitment to child health said Dr Gill I am passionate about improving the quality of care for children through research medical education and advocacy Dr William Marsden Award in Medical Ethics Dr Eric A Wasylenko Okotoks Dr Wasylenko s commitment to furthering the cause of medical ethics in Canada makes him highly deserving of the award said Dr Louis Hugo Francescutti CMA President He has made a remarkable contribution to the growing awareness of end of life care issues I feel honoured to have been nominated and to receive the CMA s Dr William Marsden Award in Medical Ethics Dr Wasylenko said Every day I witness the amazing efforts of my clinical and administrative colleagues working with patients and their families to provide the best care possible Increasingly clinical and organizational decision making incorporates challenging ethical issues without obvious ways forward I am appreciative of the opportunities to do my small part in helping people to successfully navigate these often murky waters Both end of life care and medical ethics foster deep exploration of personhood I feel privileged to be allowed into the depth of a person s hopes fears relationships uncertainty joys conflicts sense of mortality in short their humanity Practising in the areas of medical ethics and end of life care challenges me to tap into the lessons that patients and colleagues teach me about the art of medicine Dr Wasylenko is a pioneering palliative care physician in residential hospice and home based palliative care He led the creation of one of Canada s first rural community owned free standing residential hospice homes He is a volunteer advisor to other groups who are hoping to establish community and hospice services Dr Wasylenko is a practising clinical ethicist with specific interest in applied ethics of end of life care and decision making disaster management public health and resource allocation priority setting He is currently spearheading the development of a national interest group to address ethics issues in health care for incarcerated populations He has played an important role in pandemic crisis planning efforts and currently chairs the Public Health Agency of Canada s Public Health Ethics Consultative Group Dr Wasylenko has previously led the Clinical Ethics department for the Calgary Health Region and Alberta Health Services developing applied ethics consultative resources and awareness He has an extensive resume of invited and peer reviewed presentations for provincial national and international audiences He is a clinical lecturer in the Division of Palliative Medicine at the University of Calgary an associate of the University of Alberta s John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre an ethics and end of life consultant to the Health Quality Council of Alberta and is a member of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics Dr Wasylenko co developed a novel designation mechanism for care decision making and communication that has been implemented for patient and clinician use in all health settings in Alberta and is medical advisor to Alberta Health Services on advance care planning and goals of care designations initiatives He also serves as an advisor to government

    encouraged to apply throughout the year Eligibility The research grants are open to any applicant registered in undergraduate or graduate medical education programs in Alberta as well as graduate students in the history of medicine and health care registered in programs in Alberta Applicants will be undertaking a clearly defined project in the history of medicine and health care under the direction of a faculty member at a post secondary institution in Alberta Application Applications should be directed by email to the president of the Alberta Medical Foundation Dr Melanie P Stapleton Applicants will be asked to provide in electronic form Proof of current registration in an eligible program as outlined above Research proposal up to two pages in length outlining the research question and methods A brief letter from the applicant s supervising faculty member from any post secondary institution in Alberta indicating his or her agreement to supervise and mentor the applicant for the project Description of the benefits to scholarly understanding of the history of medicine and health care up to one page in length Duration of the project and finish date Final format of the scholarly activity e g journal article book chapter or other Budget and request for funding up to a maximum of 1 500 based on budget The budget cannot include salary or honoraria for investigators but may include requests to defray costs for travel accommodation and meals for investigators to conduct research and or present research findings At the finish date of the project successful applicants will provide a final report or copy of the manuscript or publication resulting from their research The report will be submitted to the president of the Alberta Medical Foundation AMF no later than 60 days after the finish date In any publications resulting from the research

    via email to janice meredith albertadoctors org A completed nomination form please submit typed as hand written submissions will not be accepted A letter of support The nominee s curriculum vitae Alternatively you may fax the documents to the attention of Ms Meredith at 780 482 5445 Recent recipients and honorable mentions Dr Susan A Christenson 2015 recipient I think Sue is one in a million She is a constant source of support knowledge and help for a community under constant threat of ill health She is an outstanding and compassionate clinician and community member Dr Christenson is remarkable and goes beyond her normal duties and practices to care for community members She knows every patient s story and life situation and takes the time to listen to everyone This year for the first time the Alberta Medical Association is honoring a physician who has demonstrated outstanding compassion philanthropy or volunteerism to improve the state of the community in which he or she is giving back Our inaugural recipient of the AMA Award for Compassionate Service is Dr Susan A Christenson who provides primary care for the people of the Blood Tribe in southern Alberta Her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts have helped create a medical home for Blood Reserve members that aims to improve their health and wellbeing Since arriving on the Blood Reserve in 2006 Dr Christenson has gone above and beyond to deliver compassionate comprehensive care to the people of the community In 2013 she was asked by the Band Council to establish a clinic at the reserve s Levern townsite Today it is a focal point of the community a place where people feel respected cared for and valued Dr Christenson s commitment to her patients is evident in myriad ways including her willingness to see patients after regular office hours re open the clinic to perform sutures and answer calls on weekends and holidays She has even on many occasions drawn labs and taken the samples to Cardston Hospital for analysis and picked up prescriptions in town for those patients who have no means of transportation After receiving her MD from the University of California in 1990 Dr Christenson completed both a post sophomore fellowship in pathology and a surgical internship before coming to Edmonton in 1991 to complete a rotating internship at the Charles Camsell Hospital Following her return to the United States she practiced emergency medicine and urgent care in various communities around California moving back to Alberta in 2006 to begin working on the Blood Reserve Dr Christenson has worked to build a team of specialty providers in areas such as obstetrics gynecology rheumatology nephrology psychology and respiratory services who now come to Levern to practice Those specialists many of whom nominated her for this award speak highly of her unwavering dedication to improving the health of her patients and her commitment to ensuring patients feel heard and respected Over the past nine years Dr Christenson has become part of the Blood
