    education CME courses that deal with a variety of clinical topics now includes the final course in the series Heart Failure It was posted on cma ca in March completing a project that was launched four years ago thanks to an education grant from Pfizer Canada The first course became available in 2011 and since then there have been almost 4 400 course registrations The courses have tackled some of the most challenging clinical issues facing physicians including Alzheimer s dementia and type 2 diabetes The topics were chosen based upon results from a poll of CMA members This was a very complex project that brought together experts from several universities and specialty societies says Dr Sam Shortt the CMA s director of quality initiatives We were in uncharted territory when we launched the program but we ve been delighted with the way things worked out the feedback we ve received from doctors who have completed modules has been very positive The modules which are available only to CMA members are eligible for CME credits from both the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Credits are transferred automatically upon completion of a course Shortt who described the module content as outstanding says the courses have earned high marks from participants with 97 8 of physicians who took a course from October to December 2013 saying they would take another one As well the majority would recommend the modules to colleagues The topics covered are Acute chronic pain Acute coronary syndromes now archived Alzheimer s dementia Chronic kidney disease Common emergencies Heart failure Lipid guidelines Obese patient Parkinson s Resistant hypertension Skin disorders Type 2 diabetes Complete details about all courses are available online by Patrick Sullivan Canadian Medical Association Website

  • CMA throws weight behind Choosing Wisely project | Alberta Medical Association
    Canada can expect to grow rapidly Two years after its launch the American body had more than 60 participating specialty societies highlighting 260 tests procedures and treatments that should be approached cautiously because of their potential for overuse When the lists were first circulated in the US in 2012 only nine specialty bodies participated CMA President Dr Louis Hugo Francescutti described the Choosing Wisely concept as brilliant in its simplicity when he discussed the Canadian project The message is simple he said More is not necessarily better when it comes to medical treatment and some tests may even be harmful For instance why expose yourself to radiation from an X ray even at relatively low doses if you don t need to Dr Francescutti said a shift in attitude is overdue Society has developed an underlying belief that more is always better when it comes to medical treatment and we want to change that attitude among both health care professionals and their patients he said Dr Wendy Levinson a Toronto physician who has been a driving force behind the launch of Choosing Wisely Canada said discussions have been held with 30 Canadian specialty societies with eight of them having already released their lists Examples drawn from those Canadian lists include Don t use Pap smears to screen women under 21 or over 69 Don t routinely perform preoperative testing such as chest X rays echocardiograms or cardiac stress tests for patients undergoing low risk surgery Don t use benzodiazepines or other sedative hypnotics in older adults as first choice for insomnia agitation or delirium For many years both physicians and patients have had a more is better attitude said Dr Levinson and colleague Tai Huynh in a recent CMAJ commentary It is time to adopt a think twice attitude and

  • CMA forums on end-of-life care: "If we don't start this discussion, who will?" | Alberta Medical Association
    on end of life care is something all Canadians have to decide However what we can do is encourage the discussion get it going if you will and that s exactly what these new town hall forums will do Dr Francescutti announced the series of 2014 town halls during a February 19 speech to the Economic Club of Canada Interest in EOL care has ebbed and flowed in recent years but two recent factors significant court cases and Canada s rapidly changing demographic profile have turned it into a top of mind issue for physicians and patients Beginning in February the CMA will provide the first national forum for discussing EOL issues when it hosts town halls across the country St John s February 20 Vancouver March 24 Whitehorse April 16 Regina May 7 Mississauga May 27 In addition the Alberta Medical Association is co hosting a member only luncheon session on Saturday March 15 immediately following the spring Representative Forum This session will be led by Dr Christopher Chip Doig and Dr Paul Boucher All of the two hour public sessions which will open and close with remarks from Dr Francescutti will focus on three topics advance care planning palliative care and physician assisted dying The town halls will be moderated by journalists from Maclean s magazine which is a co partner in the exercise All town halls will also include a three member panel and public participation will be encouraged Dr Francescutti who experienced the issues raised by end of life care personally last year when his mother died at age 83 expects to hear a challenging and lively discussion on many questions What are the respective roles of physicians and patients when it comes to having end of life discussions What is good palliative care If quality
