  • Protecting personal health information: Do you have a disaster recovery plan? | Alberta Medical Association
    Information and Privacy Commissioner OIPC released its investigation report into the outage that resulted from a fire at the Shaw Court building in Calgary The report provides findings and recommendations on business continuity and disaster recovery planning On July 11 2012 an electrical breaker in the Shaw Court building failed causing a fire in the main transformer room Servers damaged by the sprinkler system included those storing personal and health information for Service Alberta Alberta Treasury Branches Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services Of these only three respondents had business continuity and disaster recovery plans in place The fourth was found to be in contravention of the Health Information Act The OIPC has made the following recommendations to all public bodies organizations and custodians in Alberta regarding business continuity and disaster recovery planning as a component of protecting personal and health information Establish a planning process with identified teams resources and executive support Perform a business impact analysis to identify which systems and business processes are critical to continued operations This analysis should include consideration of the sensitivity and amount of personal or health information involved Review the business impact analysis regularly to assess whether priorities need to change to reflect changing requirements Prepare plans to continue operations and recover from a disaster based on criticality of systems Assign priority to more critical systems which means that critical systems will have faster recovery time objectives and more resources will be spent on recovery Approve and distribute plans Train those directly involved in the plan Make all employees aware of what to do in case of a disaster and what their role may be in ensuring continuous operations Test plans regularly Revise and refine plans based on test results and changing business requirements Read the complete report on the OIPC website

    Image viewer and the upcoming eReferral service The Alberta Netcare Portal is known across providers working in the community and Alberta Health Services AHS as the go to service for this patient information In addition to technologies that support clinicians a Personal Health Portal PHP has been implemented on MyHealth Alberta ca The PHP will eventually be Albertans access point to information from the EHR as well and will provide new ways for patients to interact with the health system The EHR continues to evolve guided by the clinical advice of the Integrated Clinical Working Group ICWG and its subgroups With membership drawn from a range of medical and clinical professions and locations these groups meet regularly to advise on EHR directions and initiatives Below is a synopsis of their terms of reference Integrated Clinical Working Group ICWG advises on the overall definition development implementation and operation of the EHR Subgroups serve as clinical advisors on different aspects of the EHR providing perspectives on such topics as patient safety data integrity functionality usability workflow impacts user training and communications Alberta Netcare Portal Subgroup priorities and plans for Alberta Netcare Portal enhancements and data availability Shared Health Record Subgroup the sharing of patient information between the EHR and EMRs Clinical Business Implications Subgroup consideration of the clinical workflow implications of EHR initiatives e g eReferral and related integration Drug Subgroup drug related initiatives such as the Pharmaceutical Information Network PIN and ePrescribe Personal Health Portal PHP Subgroup design development and implementation of the PHP and Personal Health Record including services to share health information and interact with patients EMR Evolution Integration and Release Planning Subgroup issues of functionality enhancements change management and integration within the context of the provincial EMR strategy pending the negotiation of a current strategy The ICWG and
