  • History - American Academy of Arts & Sciences
    on May 4 1780 is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States When the Academy was created the War for Independence had not ended and the Constitution was yet to be drafted The Academy s founders led by John Adams and James Bowdoin were already looking to the future anticipating the young republic s needs for new knowledge and practical ideas Permit me as a friend to all establishments which have a tendency to promote useful knowledge to congratulate you upon the institution of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Letter from Ebenezer Hazard to James Bowdoin July 8 1780 From its beginnings the Academy has engaged in the critical questions of the day It has brought together the nation s and the world s most distinguished citizens to address social and intellectual issues of common concern and above all to develop ways to translate knowledge into action Since 1780 Academy members have included both those who discover and advance knowledge and those who apply knowledge to the problems of society Working together they have established a legacy of leadership that continues to produce reflective independent and pragmatic studies that inform public policy and lead to constructive action In 1780 sixty two individuals clergymen and merchants scholars and physicians farmers and public leaders signed their names to the Charter of the American Academy Along with John Adams and James Bowdoin the founders included Samuel Adams then a delegate to the Continental Congress John Hancock Governor of Massachusetts and Robert Treat Paine Attorney General of Massachusetts and with Hancock a signer of the Declaration of Independence Before the turn of the century the Academy s Fellowship broadened with the election of George Washington Benjamin Franklin Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton among others During the nineteenth century the

  • Considerations for Selecting Academy Studies - American Academy of Arts & Sciences
    governance bodies from committees of the Academy from Members or from others The policy of the Academy approved by the Board of Directors is that all Member participation in a study including serving as Chairs Advisors and or Principal Investigators will be conducted on a volunteer basis Exceptions must be approved by the Board Depending on the size and scope of the proposed study the Committee on Studies and Publications will use its discretion in deciding how to apply the following considerations when choosing new studies Considerations for Studies The American Academy of Arts Sciences has established the following considerations for selecting new studies The study should serve the common good at the national or international level and advance goals that are important to the nation and or the world The study should be impartial independent objective and non partisan The study should draw on the distinctive breadth and depth of the Academy s membership and the Academy s convening capacity The study should include a range of participants Fellows Foreign Honorary Members and other individuals from multiple institutions preferably from throughout the country and when relevant from around the world The participants should represent multiple disciplines professions and backgrounds and when appropriate have relevant policy experience The participants should possess the appropriate range of expertise and experience needed for the study The overall composition of the participants should be balanced in perspectives and points of view There should be a mix of senior and younger participants The study should explore themes or topics that require an interdisciplinary and or multidisciplinary approach and that fall in one or more of the following categories Is abiding and of broad common interest Strengthens the infrastructure for research and education Is timely and addresses a current concern in the country and or world
