  • William T. Golden Receives 2001 Scholar-Patriot Award - American Academy of Arts & Sciences
    intellectual Freedman added The Scholar Patriot Award is among the Academy s highest honors According to Chief Executive Officer Leslie Berlowitz The award honors individuals who embody the Academy s 221 year old commitment to promoting the arts and sciences in the service of the community and the nation Last year s award went to Leo L Beranek a pioneer of modern acoustics and an early contributor to the development of the Internet Golden s distinguished career of service to the nation began as a naval officer during World War II when he received several Letters of Commendation for inventing an antiaircraft device In 1950 President Truman asked Golden to serve as an advisor to help mobilize the nation s scientific resources His recommendations contained in what are now widely known as the Golden Memoranda established the foundation for a presidential science advisory system and detailed a program for the National Science Foundation Golden co authored and edited three books on science advising to the top levels of government His government work also included roles at the Atomic Energy Commission the Department of State and the second Hoover Commission Golden has helped advance public support of both the sciences and the humanities through a lifetime of service to many of the nation s leading scientific cultural and educational organizations In addition to his role as the chair emeritus of the American Museum of Natural History Golden has made unparalleled contributions as a board member and trustee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Barnard College the Central Park Conservancy Mount Sinai Medical Center the National Humanities Center and the New York Academy of Sciences In 1996 he received the Public Welfare Medal the highest honor accorded by the National Academy of Sciences In the citation presented to him

    Member Login User Name Password Forgot your password Academy Awards First Scholar Patriot Award to Leo L Beranek Cofounder of Bolt Beranek and Newman September 12 2000 The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded its first Scholar Patriot Distinguished Service award to Dr Leo L Beranek a pioneer of modern acoustics and an early contributor to the development of today s Internet Dr Beranek received the award in honor of his contributions to science his role in founding Bolt Beranek and Newman BBN and other engineering and media companies and his service on behalf of the community and the nation Academy President James O Freedman said Leo Beranek s wide ranging work in science and engineering has helped shape our world from the beginnings of the Internet to the architecture of concerts halls and opera houses He added Dr Beranek is a practical visionary who represents all that this Academy stands for a scientist and businessman who achieved great distinction in his profession and a concerned citizen who has served countless educational and cultural institutions Academy Chief Executive Officer Leslie Berlowitz explained The Scholar Patriot Award honors individuals who embody the Academy s 220 year old commitment to promoting the arts and sciences in the service of the community and the nation Dr Beranek received his doctorate in science from Harvard in 1940 and then went on to form Harvard s first World War II research laboratory to study electroacoustics In 1948 he received the Presidential Certificate of Merit for his war research contributions notably advances in shoring up the nation s radar defenses That same year he cofounded BBN an acoustics engineering firm Under his presidency BBN shifted its emphasis from acoustics to computer science and built the ARPANET the predecessor to the Internet A founder and
