  • TLC TUESDAY: Sixth Street Viaduct - A+D Architecture and Design Museum
    structure have proven to be fruitless Century old infrastructure solutions firm HNTB Corporation and Michael Maltzan Architecture have provided a solution with a modern twist in tune with the ongoing regeneration of downtown Los Angeles Maltzan s design entitled The Ribbon of Light is a wave like structure with soaring arches reaching heights as high as sixty feet There are bicycle paths walkways and two arches climbable by stair It is a multi faceted structure providing artfully framed views of the Los Angeles skyline while pedestrians and cyclists alike gain access to drought tolerant open space below Although one must always appreciate that form follows function Maltzan s design aims to be multi disciplinary The Ribbon of Light is not just about getting from here to there It is about the experience of the bridge itself and how it is a symbol and tool for social connection in the city Yet this project is a mammoth undertaking Since graffiti tattooed walls and litter clogged crevices are elements that make Sixth Street such a great canvas for gritty Hollywood blockbuster car chases Maltzan s 449 million dollar Ribbon of Light is a far cry from the old 1930s design and hopes to brighten and clean up the place a bit Although it provides a safer architectural structure Los Angelenos fear this new design runs the risk of losing a historic landmark however grungy and decrepit to something that lacks cultural significance Yet Maltzan wants to use the 449 million budget to add more than just a new bridge Plans are currently underway to install a soccer field in one of the drought tolerant spaces underneath the bridge and one percent of the budget will support public artwork by local artist Glenn Kaino Kaino s project will explore the significance of the

    tasking artist whose work runs the gamut from painting to design and even making music North East LA is the home of his 560m square industrial art studio It is in this space that Roettinger moves from one project to the next every 2 6 hours He may jump from working on a painting to designing books for museums and galleries and is always teetering between high and low tech from a xerox in one colour to a book that was generated by writing code Although he doesn t perform anymore Roettinger still makes music When he s really stressed with other work he likes to give himself 24 hour deadlines to put out a record This ability to jump from one medium to the next has led to creative musical collaborations such as the Art Music Journal with No age Another collaboration developed after Roettinger was introduced to Hedi Slimane by a friend Saint Laurent used several of his paintings as textiles in the 2013 winter collection and the artworks also comprised a limited edition book which served as the invitation to the runway show When thinking about all of his different projects and whether there is a similar
