  • Reflections on Rolling Mill | The Appalachian Independent
or hookup fees for utilities including phone and cable Conservatively then I d think 93 000 should be the starting point After all City leaders say they hope these residents will want to stay in Cumberland And with that funding they could be decent clients for the area s real estate professionals Of course that should be the base offer so there are likely some properties that should fetch much more If residents have invested substantially in home improvements they should be able to negotiate for a higher price For example in my last home we replaced the roof redid all the electric and replaced the furnace which probably cost us more than 25 000 We now live in a home we love but we know that within the next few years we ll probably need to do all the same in our new home For us it was a choice For the residents of Rolling Mill choice isn t part of the transaction Given the age of Cumberland homes they ll likely be making those types of investments and updates anywhere they move so there should be an additional fee offered to cover such expenses for property owners that have a good track record for maintenance Reasonably then shouldn t something like 116 000 be the starting point for some This would be fair and just Comments 2 Estimate too high Brian Hedrick Thursday 19 November 2015 23 33 I bought an average duplex in the RM area 2 months ago for 42 and you believe a competent business owner should start negotiations around 82k for a single family Certainly home owners should be fairly compensated including relocation costs and recent upgrades but I think you should narrow your statistics to just the RM area Why narrow it to

  • Reaction or Silence for the KKK, Which Path to Take? | The Appalachian Independent
opinions if they want to preserve their own constitutional rights they must recognize that those rights extend to KKK members That settled the question then became what the community should do to demonstrate that western Maryland does not condone such racist and hate filled attitudes While the online debate continued I took the question to students in my Social Problems course It s a diverse group with about 2 3rds of the course African American What should the community do I asked them Their response was overwhelming and a little surprising Nothing they said Absolutely nothing They argued that KKK members are attention seekers and by countering with protests or even covering the rally in the media we would be giving them exactly what they wanted The real problem the claimed was that the media was probably going to cover it regardless If it never received any press at all the rally would be a spectacular failure Unfortunately it seemed too late for that given the local paper s coverage Word was already out and by Thursday afternoon commentary on the planned rally had spread to email exchanges and phone calls Community members wanted to send a clear message hate isn t welcome here By Friday afternoon at least two counter rallies were planned one silent protest positioned directly across from KKK members and the other gathering for peace to take place at Canal Place My friends and colleagues debated which if any to attend Where was I on Saturday I was in downtown Cumberland enjoying the afternoon with my three year old son We dined on hotdogs at Coney Island and attended a bouncy birthday celebration at Kids Kingdom I wasn t at any rally The words of my students resonated and I decided that I would not give

  • Carpenters In The Forehead/ Become A Muslim & Start Killing People Today | The Appalachian Independent
religion is on a par with that mentality But why have any feelings of guilt for the atrocities you commit When you have Allah on your side any horrific killings are nothing to worry about for a pleasure garden of sensual delights awaits you in heaven Martyrdom is nothing short of bliss soon to be embraced Bomb head here bomb head there here a bomb there a bomb everywhere you go a head bomb Islam in Iraq evil to the core deserving of absolutely no respect but absolutely deserving of being dumped on Respect for a religion has to be earned and certainly not when inflicting perpetual brutality Last Updated on Thursday 15 August 2013 22 46 Comments 3 Respectful Dialogue Kara RogersThomas Friday 16 August 2013 07 14 What you re referring to is a geopolitical situation which feeds on an already fierce split between two Muslim populations It s important to remember that Muslim populations are found all over the world According to Pew Research Statistics China has more Muslims than Syria while Russia is home to more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined Your headline is a gross generalization intended for shock value perhaps that does little to further understanding or encourage dialogue Sociology s Labeling Theory would caution against such generalizations labeling in such a way could actually result in those who are labeled acting even more deviantly in response to that label respectful dialogue Jeff Davis Monday 19 August 2013 09 17 I certainly realize that there are a billion Muslims and that most followers of the religion are not violent However the atrocities committed in the name of Islam originate with the instigation and approval of the leading clerics in the Middle East As such they deserve no respect when they clearly have the choice of denouncing the behavior of their devout radicals who murder innocents The thought that labeling Muslims as violent somehow prevents further understanding seems to me a bit absurd I have no desire to try to understand the terrorism that is inflicted on their populace and I refuse to accept the labeling theory that says condemning evil behavior will somehow be responsible for more disgusting murders If you choose to be part of the Muslim religion you should be aware of the mind set of your spiritual leaders and I would maintain that as such you are a tacit enabler when they promote hatred and violence The title you may see as intended for shock value but those words pale when compared to the shocking brutality that is a daily occurrence in Muslim societies About as stupid as the behavior it purportedly condemns Les Genser Saturday 12 October 2013 15 48 It is hard to take a presumably thought out and considered rant like this seriously when the author resorts to badly photoshopped images of the Prophet being shat on as the capstone of his argument Not only offensive and insensitive it is also brilliance of a type usually reserved

  • Carpenters In The Forehead/ The New Iranian President & The New Shah: SWAK | The Appalachian Independent
didn t hurt having a back up team in the form of an intelligence agency SAVAK that would send shivers down anyone s spine They were on a short leash and the Shah held the leash He cut an imposing figure in the picture of him from 1973 found on the Wikipedia website His gaze is one of importance and intensity clearly one that does not tolerate insolence The chest of his white uniform is resplendent with medals and he has a gold handled saber by his side you just know that he is the Boss Man the Imperial Majesty Jump ahead a few decades to 2013 and we can enjoy another royal line of dictators Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 the takeover of the U S embassy and the booting of Shah Reza to exile in Egypt the Iranian constitution has established an Islamic succession of power No longer going by the moniker Imperial Majesty the Boss man is now known as the Supreme Leader And it turns out that the cleric Ali Khamenei is really no different than the old Shah when it comes to who holds the reins of power He is the one and only backed by the clique of Islamic fundamentalist clerics Islamic Fundamentalist A redundancy The Shah passed down from the House of Reza and Khamenei comes from the line of legal scholars who are awaiting the return of the 12 th Iman This is spelled out very clearly in Article 5 of the Iranian constitution during the absence of the removed Twelfth Iman may God hasten his reappearance government and leadership of the community in the Islamic Republic of Iran belong to the rightful God fearing legal scholar Faqih who is recognized and acknowledged as the Islamic leader by the majority of the population If you thought the old Shah wielded absolute power check out a sampling of the powers that the new guy why not just call him the New Shah of Iran gets in his arsenal of control he has command of all the armed forces appoints all members in the judiciary and controls the levers of national television and radio It is widely known and accepted that his voice is the final say in anything that is considered to be of major importance While he may not have SAVAK to back him up the Revolutionary Guard will do his bidding quite well and if he happens to need any opposition groups roughed up a bit the Basij is there to quell any voice of dissent or protest There will be no gatherings to question the iron clad rule of the Supreme Leader So there was an election in Iran and there is a new President The strings that attach to his mouth arms and legs are hidden from sight but they are made to move by Ali Khamenei The new President is called a moderate cleric but that is an oxymoron in the world of fundamentalist Islam He may
