the layout of the pages and make them more useable we shall gradually move the catalogue pages running back to the beginning of 2000 from a one page a month to a one page a day format As a further interim measure pending the complete reconstruction of the site we shall also create separate sections of the Catalogue listing all the recordings held dealing with specific topics The first three sections to be created will be those listing recordings in the following subject areas Category Theory and Topos Theory General Relativity and Cosmology Foundations of Quantum Theory and Quantum Gravity Plans for The New Site This is what we are aiming at The bare chronology of the recordings which forms the still radically incomplete current catalogue will be completely replaced by a new catalogue which offers searchability of all the material by multiple fields speaker title topic relevant key words and location as well as a complete chronology of the recordings The existing Word Press site will remain in operation until this new site and the new catalogue are complete and we have received user feedback As the new site is being developed we shall aim to have the catalogue entries for each recording linked with the following information 1 In the speaker field A listing of all other recordings in the Archive by that speaker with further links to a bibliography of their writings and where copyright clearance permits links to any scanned or e archived copies of their published work which the Archive holds Pending the construction of the new site bibliographies of speaker s writings and links when copyright permits will be added to the Section Catalogue of the Archive by Speaker within the existing Word Press Site This is clearly a massive task Progress will be gradual and depend on available funding 2 In the topic field Links to the relevant section of the subject catalogue and the appropriate subdivisions within each subject There will continue to be links from the entry for each recording to the speaker s overheads in the case of audio recordings wherever the Archive holds copies of these and to scanned copies of other supporting material whenever this is held by the Archive In the case of the Videos recent apps permit the embedding of the speaker s overheads within the screen synched to the portion of the recording where he or she made use of that particular overhead Having overheads synchronised and embedded within the video recordings is our long term aim Achieving that with an Archive of this size will be time consuming In the meantime they will be available whenever the Archive holds them via a separate link for each recording in the existing catalogue They will be uploaded as far as possible in tandem with the recordings dating back to the Year 2000 We should like to thank our friends and collaborators at Great Bear Recording Studios Bristol UK headed by Mr Adrian Finn They are currently

recording new material anywhere in the world where permission is given and arrangements can be made especially whenever it documents discussions and developments of broadly foundational interest and particularly when for whatever reason there is unlikely to be any other record of these or only an incomplete or delayed one b To conserve the existing recordings and written records and make copies available to researchers pending the time the whole archive can be put online c To discover important previously unknown or uncirculated recorded material relevant to the exact sciences and their history and philosophy and to conserve it through digitalisation and make it available oline whenever copyright permits Bringing to light the Grothendieck material mentioned in the History Section above provides a perfect illustration of this activity That material will be amongst the first portions of the Archive to be digitalised and made available online d To complete the Catalogue of the Archive and place it online e To make an initial selection of a number of the most important video and audio recordings available online in the belief this will generate further interest in the Archive and help to attract funding support for the Project of digitalising the

material in Mathematics Physics and Philosophy particularly Philosophy of Science The bulk of the recordings from the period 1971 to the late 1990s are of events which took place in the UK chiefly in London Oxford and Cambridge The material recorded was chosen chiefly for its bearing on broadly foundational questions and conceptual issues Although a proportion of the recordings from the earlier years are of events in other countries chiefly Germany and Italy from 1996 an increasing proportion are of events in locations outside the UK chiefly throughout Europe the USA and Canada In recent years events in China Russia and Egypt have also beeen recorded Since 2000 an increasing proportion of material in languages other than English has been added chiefly French but also Italian German and Russian In addition the Archive has also recently acquired important older material recorded prior to 1973 and hopes to acquire more This includes items such as recordings of discussions between Dirac Wigner and Wheeler made in 1971 and a recent major discovery a set of 135 recordings of 3 lecture courses given in English by the great French mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck in the United States in 1973 Today the Archive houses

the holder of the copyright usually the speaker See Section of Website on Copyright Access and Downloads ii the recording has been remastered digitally or was already in a digital format Most of the recordings made since 2000 are already in digital form The earlier recordings will be reformatted digitally as resources permit and any necessary audio restoration work undertaken Given the size of the Archive this will take time Digitalisation is also vital for the long term preservation of the material In the case of material not covered by i permission must be obtained from the holder of the copyright before the material can be made available to enquirers PROGRESS REPORT October 2009 The catalogue is still very much in the early stages of compilation but progress has been made The Pages covering the years from 1973 to 1999 so far contain only a very preliminary listing of a few of the highlights this section of the catalogue is still at the Lucky Dip stage The material is listed under very brief headings giving an indication of some of the major conferences colloquia lecture courses seminar series and other events recorded over this period Additional entries will be steadily added and those entries already entered will be greatly expanded giving details of speakers and titles of talks and other information and will be allocated to precise dates within the monthly pages for each year The pages covering the years 1999 to 2007 contain monthly listings of many though still by no means all of the recordings made month by month These listings are at this point in the form of short entries giving in the case of e g conferences colloquia symposia just the name and date of the event and the number of recordings made Typically such a listing is currently in the following form Under eg JULY 2000 17th 22nd JULY 2000 CT 2000 COMO International Category Theory Meeting 2000 Villa Olmo Lake Como Italy Total 33 Recordings Details of recordings with information on speaker title duration to be added Links to Conference Programme Abstracts Overheads and other Information to be added The information in these monthly pages thus forms a framework itself still far from finished which will be brought to completion so as to provide a short listing of all the recordings held for each month Within that framework the entries for each month will be steadily expanded to give more complete information in the case of conferences or symposia this would be a detailed listing of the individual recordings with information on speaker title duration of recording and links to supporting information eg abstracts and overheads To this finished version the links to the recordings themselves whether video or audio files will be added as resources permit provided the requirements i and ii above are satisfied The pages covering the years 2008 and 2009 contain a substantially complete listing of all the recordings in the Archive for those years This section of the catalogue
