  • ASPRS 2014 Outstanding Service Award Winners
    for his leadership in establishing and leading the Lidar Division and sustained efforts to enhance the LAS file format specification as a geospatial industry standard David Alvarez for this leadership in establishing periodic GIS Division teleconferences and initiating a web based seminar series with co sponsorship from CaGIS and GLIS Roger E Crystal for his sustained efforts as Membership Development Coordinator William G Hemple for his long term leadership and professionalism as Chair memorial Address Committee The ASPRS Outstanding Service Award was established in 1991 It is given to society members in recognition of outstanding and unusual efforts in helping ASPRS develop and carry out its program over a sustained period Recipients have performed outstanding service at the chapter regional or national level Awardees services include any activities including professional that have helped the society achieve its goals and objectives The award consists of a bronze plaque These awards were presented in March at the 2014 Annual ASPRS Conference in Louisville Additional awards made during the ASPRS 80th Annual Conference and administered by the ASPRS Foundation were Ford Bartlett Award Recipients Steven P Lennartz Potomac Region Karen L Schuckman Potomac Region and Xiaojun Yang Florida Region SAIC Estes Memorial Teaching Award Winner James B Campbell PhD Professor of Geography Virginia Tech University Blacksburg Virginia Outstanding Workshop Instructor Award Winner Sorin C Popescu PhD Founded in 1979 The ASPRS Foundation Inc is an independent 501 c 3 organization established to provide grants scholarships loans and other forms of aid to individuals or organizations pursuing knowledge of imaging and geospatial information science and technology and their applications across the scientific governmental and commercial sectors The Foundation is the primary funding source for all non sponsored awards and scholarships recognized by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Click Here to Report

  • ASPRS 2014 Annual Conference a Success & co-located JACIE Workshop an Effective Partnership
    JACIE Workshop and ASPRS Annual Conference offered a number of overlapping technical sessions and a joint keynote address on Wednesday March 26 with David Hodgson DCM International Imaging Limited and Frank Kelly U S Geological Survey EROS Data Center ASPRS and JACIE plan to co locate again for 2015 in Tampa Florida May 4 through 8 2015 The ASPRS 80th Annual Conference welcomed over 800 attendees and introduced many new and fresh ideas into the conference program starting with the conference theme Geospatial Power in Our Pockets The technical program consisted of over 70 sessions and 200 presentations on topics such as Unmanned Aerial Systems Emerging Technologies Lidar 3 D Modeling and many more Opening the conference attendees were welcomed to Louisville in grand style with a reception at the Kentucky Derby Museum Experiencing the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports attendees roamed the museum to find food stations bourbon tastings Derby history and more Christopher Begley PhD Associate Professor of Anthropology at Transylvania University began the technical program as the keynote speaker on Tuesday March 25 with a fascinating presentation on Lost Cities Lasers and the Vestiges of the Colonial Discourse of Archaeology The newly created Business Management for the Geospatial Professional track welcomed a number of special guest speakers to discuss topics such as the value of PMP Certification for the geospatial professional funding and risk management generating leads marketing support ideas and discussions on the contract process for small businesses The new track received resoundingly positive reviews and will continue to be offered at future ASPRS conferences to further integrate the entire ASPRS membership The exhibit area was filled with 40 worldwide companies showcasing the latest products and services in the geospatial industry and remained active with Thought Leader Presentations refreshment breaks and multiple receptions throughout the week The hall again included the special UAS Showcase and welcomed three UAS companies with models video and information on the popular unmanned aerial system industry The new Thought Leader Presentation stage was a draw for attendees to hear 15 minute thought provoking presentations by exhibitors such as Esri ISPRS and Visual Intelligence The stage also became a live music jam session for a few of ASPRS s very own Tommy Jordan Chris McGlone and Jesse Winch entertained attendees on Wednesday evening during the Poster Reception with authentic bluegrass music Numerous awards were presented throughout the conference to many deserving recipients including two Honorary Members service awards student scholarships outstanding papers and ASPRS Region awards The 2014 ASPRS President A Stewart Walker was inducted on Tuesday March 25 2014 at the 80th Installation of ASPRS Officers along with the 2014 Vice President Charles Toth Many Division Directors and Assistant Division Directors were also inducted to the ASPRS Board of Directors Founded in 1934 ASPRS is an international professional organization of geospatial data professionals ASPRS is devoted to advancing knowledge and improving understanding of the mapping sciences to promote responsible application of photogrammetry remote sensing geographic information systems and supporting technologies The

  • USGIF Names Roberta “Bobbi” Lenczowski as the 2013 Arthur C. Lundahl - Thomas C. Finnie Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
    this award is a reminder that we must continue to pay it forward as mentors and advocates following the example of both Art Lundahl and Tom Finnie Lenczowski is an independent geospatial information intelligence consultant who spent 28 years in the public sector She retired in 2005 from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency NGA where she finished her NGA career as executive director of NGA Campus West in St Louis During her tenure in Washington D C Lenczowski served three years as NGA s technical executive and was also director of operations with the National Imagery and Mapping Agency NIMA for more than five years She also served as president of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Currently Lenczowski is serving her second appointment representing NGA on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s Advisory Committee on Commercial Remote Sensing Previously she represented NGA on the Department of the Interior s National Satellite Land Remote Sensing Data Archive Advisory Committee and the Security Affairs Support Association Lenczowski also had an influential career as an integral part of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing ASPRS Executive Board During the recent ASPRS 2014 Annual Conference Lenczowski completed her term as Immediate Past President ending four years as an officer of the Society During her 2012 13 year as President she led a task force working on the branding of ASPRS as well as providing direction in innumerable other areas Lenczowski has been especially supportive of the Society s Sustaining Members Council Student Advisory Council and Young Professionals Council always seeking ways to meet the demands of these bodies which represent the constituencies that undergird the future of the Society Lenczowski along with her husband Jerry Lenczowski has been heavily involved for many years in the ASPRS St Louis Region culminating in the expediting of the merger of this region with its neighbor Central Region to form a new vibrant Society entity in the mid west Lenczowski has been a mainstay of ASPRS for a generation and the Officers Board of Directors and members have been especially grateful for her expertise eloquence and calm as the Society has weathered a turbulent 2013 and moves ahead with initiatives to grow The Lundahl Finnie award recipient is nominated and voted on by the USGIF Board of Directors Board members chose Lenczowski for inspiring the Global Geospatial Integrated Data Environment concept which ultimately led to the standup of the Global Geospatial Integrated Product Team and creation of NIMA Production Cells the first use of commercial off the shelf workstations for the GEOINT mission This accomplishment led to the Integrated Exploitation Capability USGIF s Board of Directors said Lenczowski continues to show dedication to the GEOINT Community and the furtherance of research and development around geospatial data management USGIF s purpose is to promote the geospatial intelligence tradecraft and to develop a stronger community of interest between government industry academia professional organizations and individuals who share a mission focused around the development and

  • Charles Toth Elected as ASPRS Vice President
    for geospatial information science and engineering professionals uniquely blending government the private sector and academia It is absolutely essential for the entire society to maintain its position of leadership as the broad use and application of remote sensing and geospatial data reaches many users who are not traditional members of ASPRS Toth continued we must be more proactive demonstrating our knowledge and competence to solve problems for humankind including disaster response environment climate change peacekeeping and food supply I look forward to serving as an officer of ASPRS with honor and responsibility Scott Perkins was elected Assistant Director of the Photogrammetric Applications Division PAD Perkins is Vice President of Federal Programs at Aero Metric Inc now part of Quantum Spatial He was a member of the inaugural class of the Photogrammetric Modeling Program at Ferris State University and he later earned a Business Management degree as a working professional He is Director and Treasurer of the ASPRS Central Region He is also Vice Chair of the Hydrographic Services Review Panel of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA and serves on the Office of the National Ombudsman Regulatory Fairness Board of the Small Business Administration SBA Perkins said we have important work ahead as we work to complete new ASPRS Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data to replace the existing ASPRS Accuracy Standards for Large Scale Maps 1990 and the ASPRS Guidelines Vertical Accuracy Reporting for Lidar Data 2004 John McCombs was elected Assistant Director of the Remote Sensing Applications Division RSAD McCombs is a Senior Image Analyst with the Baldwin Group For the last 10 years he has led NOAA s Coastal Change Analysis Program He earned his MS from Virginia Tech where he concentrated on using topographic factor maps in a geographic system to improve wildlife management He has been an active ASPRS member for 14 years and recently chaired the RSAD Climate Change Committee He is currently leading the revision of the remote sensing terms for the ASPRS Glossary of the Mapping Sciences McCombs said the last few years have seen new sensors being deployed and used both commercially and in research Turning this data into usable information through consistent accurate peer reviewed methods should be a large focus of the Society and this Division in particular Jason Stoker was elected Assistant Director of the LiDAR Division LD Stoker is a Physical Scientist with the US Geological Survey USGS at the Earth Resources Observation and Science EROS Center He was the former Director of the USGS Center for Lidar Information Coordination and Knowledge CLICK He earned his BS in Natural Resource Management and his MS in Geospatial Science both from Colorado State University He has been a conference keynote speaker for ASPRS and was guest editor for a special issue of Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing PE RS the Journal of the Imaging and Geospatial Information Society Within the LD he has focused on new specifications standards and best practices for 3 D data generally not just

  • ASPRS Appoints Dr. Michael Hauck as Executive Director
    to technical breadth he is a versatile collaborative and adaptive leader with over a decade of general management experience that includes both board and executive positions in not for profit organizations His volunteer work includes service on local State and National boards e g the Venture West Network of entrepreneurs the State of Wyoming Telecommunications Council and the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies His key scientific accomplishment has been the acquisition processing and interpretation of the first ever deep seismic reflection profiles through the Himalayas which were part of his PhD dissertation in Geological Sciences at Cornell University Beyond training in science and engineering Hauck is also a student of science and technology communications and a graduate of the Leadership Wyoming trustee leadership development program In accepting his appointment Dr Hauck said in part I am excited about the opportunity to join you the other officers and directors councils advisory groups members and external stakeholders as we collectively advance the goals of ASPRS The women and men of ASPRS have immense technical depth across a broad range of disciplines that few professional societies can match The work of ASPRS members is integrated into so many aspects of modern life that it is easy to take their work for granted From the internal workings of GPS to the imagery embedded in the daily weather forecast ASPRS members are behind the scenes making it all work for the betterment of humankind Whether they serve in academia government or industry I want to help members tell their stories maintain their skills grow in their profession inspire others to join us and build the future in an ethical way that honors the public support that ASPRS receives I am honored to be asked to join this winning team Speaking on behalf of

  • ASPRS Selects John R. Jensen and Stanley Morain as Honorary Members
    of Remote Sensing Remote Sensing of Human Settlements 3rd Ed Vol 5 2005 and Manual of Remote Sensing Earth Observing Platforms Sensors 3rd Ed Vol 1 1 2009 He is a contributing author on ten 10 remote sensing related scientific reports published by the National Research Council National Academy Press Dr Jensen was Chairman of the Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers AAG in its formative years He received the ASPRS Alan Gordon Memorial Award in 1989 He served as President of ASPRS from 1995 to 1996 He received the ASPRS Autometric Award in 1996 Dr Jensen received the ASPRS Fellow honor in 1998 and the SAIC John E Estes Memorial Teaching Award in 2004 The United States Secretary of the Interior and the Administrator of NASA honored Dr Jensen with the prestigious William T Pecora Award in 2006 for his lifetime accomplishments in remote sensing science He received the AAG Lifetime Achievement Honor for his work in remote sensing and GIScience in 2009 Dr Stanley Morain received his PhD in Geography from the University of Kansas KU in 1970 and was an Assistant Professor there until 1974 From 1974 to 2008 he progressed from Associate to Full Professor of Geography at the University of New Mexico UNM while also serving as Director of UNM s Earth Data Analysis Center EDAC from 1976 until his retirement in 2008 For over 38 years Dr Morain carved a distinguished career in remote sensing recognized locally nationally and internationally His contributions focused on educating his students and developing professional ties to research communities in many developing countries on the applications of remote sensing in several societal benefit areas but primarily in agriculture transportation and public health In pursuit of his vision he worked with many research teams and governments in Latin America Asia and Africa Dr Morain s graduate research at KU centered on applications of airborne side looking K band radar imagery for vegetation analysis and agriculture In the early 1970s with the advent of Landsat he was among the first to use satellite imagery for crop and vegetation analyses In 1973 his interests were re directed toward developing countries wishing to adopt Landsat 1 technology for natural resources management Since 1973 Dr Morain has consulted on or contracted to develop over 30 training programs and applications projects with the U S Geological Survey Office of International Geology the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization UN FAO the United Nations Development Program UNDP and the United States Agency for International Development US AID These all have been aimed at inserting evolving spectral and spatial analysis techniques into the decision making apparatus of developing countries He has assisted in program design implementation and evaluation in many countries of Asia Africa and Central America usually in the role of project team leader chief of party or chief technical advisor Between 1983 and 1986 he served UN FAO and UNDP as the Chief Technical Advisor on remote sensing projects to introduce
