  • PE&RS Instructions for Authors of Highlight Articles
    company agency university and location and any relevant experience Upon receiving a manuscript the Assistant Editor will notify the corresponding author of its receipt Each submitted Highlight Article will be reviewed by the Assistant Editor with help from the Editorial Board to determine whether it is suitable for publication All articles accepted for publication are subject to copy editing for clarity and for conformity with PE RS style Authors will be expected to review the final galley proofs before publication How Long does it take to get Published Getting an article from idea to publication takes several months The typical lead time between the final submission and publication is two to four months Complex or lengthy articles may take longer whereas timely subjects can be expedited for faster publication Format Guidelines Manuscripts submitted must be prepared as outlined below Manuscripts that do not conform to the requirements described below will be returned for format revisions before they will be considered 1 TYPING All pages must be numbered at the bottom of the page In addition manuscripts must be double spaced An 11 or 12 point font such as Times New Roman or Arial is preferred Authors should use 8 5 by 11 inch or A4 International 210 by 297 mm paper size with 30 mm 1 25 inch margins all around 2 LENGTH Highlight Articles can vary from 650 words up to 2 500 words with additional images graphs tables diagrams or other appropriate illustrations 3 TITLE Authors should strive for titles no longer than eight to ten words 4 FIGURES AND TABLES All figures and tables must be cited in the text Authors should note that figures and tables will usually be reduced in size to optimize use of space and should be designed accordingly For purposes of initial review figures and tables can be embedded in the manuscript However it should be noted that papers once accepted will require that all figures be included as separate files Illustrations should be 300 dpi tiff images Anything less will not be accepted If the manuscript contains copyrighted imagery a copyright statement must be included in the caption e g SPOT Image Copyright year CNES 5 COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS A few color illustrations may be included at no cost as long as they add value to the article The Assistant Editor will contact the corresponding author if there is any question regarding color illustrations 6 METRIC SYSTEM The metric system SI Units will be employed throughout a manuscript except in cases where the English System has special merit stemming from accepted conventional usage e g 9 by 9 inch photograph 6 inch focal length Authors should refer to Usage of the International System of Units Photogrammetric Engineering Remote Sensing 1978 44 7 923 938 7 EQUATIONS Keep equations to a minimum Authors who believe that equations are necessary should express equations as simply as possible They should include only those equations required by an average reader to understand the technical arguments in

    Engineering and Remote Sensing PE RS is interested in receiving proposals for Special Issues In such issues all peer reviewed articles address a specific theme The theme may be proposed by a prospective Guest Editor or may be suggested by others It typically takes 12 14 months to bring a Special Issue of PE RS to publication The Guest Editor is responsible for soliciting and receiving the papers for the Special Issue having them peer reviewed to determine acceptance for the issue and determining which of the accepted papers should be included in the Special Issue Anyone wishing to propose a theme for a Special Issue and or who wishes to serve as Guest Editor for such Special Issues must contact PE RS Editor in Chief Dr Russell Congalton for approval before proceeding To facilitate consideration of such requests a short written proposal should be prepared and emailed to Dr Congalton at russ congalton unh edu This proposal must include your contact information the specific subject of the Special Issue a short justification of why this should be a Special Issue and any other pertinent information For complete instructions regarding PE RS Special Issues please see the Instructions for Guest

    version 7 0 or higher If the reviewer uses an incompatible viewer such as Foxit or an older version of either Acrobat or Adobe the form may appear to work properly but will be unusable when returned The reviewer should complete the entire review form save it to the computer print a copy of the completed review and then return the completed form to jcongalton asprs org Guidelines If you do not understand the message or the presentation the manuscript probably needs a re write Offer suggestions or point out paragraphs that are not clear but do not assume responsibility for re writing the manuscript Engage in constructive criticism avoid sarcasm in your review comments Always treat the author s with respect even if you do not agree with their arguments or conclusions Read through the manuscript once for content flow and message then re read it for comments suggestions and obvious errors Compare citations to references They should be mutual and complementary References without citations and citations without references should be noted Spend quality time but not excessive time on minutiae unless that is your desire Suggested amount of time for a review is 2 3 hours One hour to read the manuscript 1 2 hours for comments suggestions and filling in the manuscript review form Frequently Asked Questions 1 What if I am not qualified to comment on some sections of the manuscript In the majority of cases reviewers are selected who are expert in the subject s addressed in a manuscript Occasionally a manuscript will involve several categories of knowledge or merge several technologies Since several qualified reviewers are needed for each manuscript the editorial staff tries to select individuals who represent the breadth of topics presented in a given manuscript You need not be expert in all of them 2 How much editing should I do as a reviewer Not much if any according to your own desires Remember that your job is to evaluate the worthiness of the manuscript for publication It should be technically sound but it is not your job to make it that way readable not too mathematical or if so at least the mathematics are necessary to understand the arguments concise and appropriately illustrated If there are errors of omission and commission your evaluation should indicate where improvements could be made Ultimately the author s is are responsible for the technical quality of their work With your assistance our only goal is to publish the best manuscripts to enhance the value of PE RS for our membership and enhance the careers of the contributors to our journal In the end the author s are responsible for making their contributions error free and technically accurate 3 Should I correct the grammar and syntax on a manuscript where it is evident that English is not the author s first language No unless you have the time and a compelling need to fix the English language As editor I try to return manuscripts to
