  • Data Preservation and Archiving Committee Charter
    setting committee meeting agenda meeting announcements and records chairing meetings maintaining committee roster submitting to ASPRS Board of Directors written semi annual committee reports attending Board of Directors meeting when committee is recommending policy change or Board action submitting to ASPRS President on an annual basis the committee s proposed goals and objectives for that year Committee Makeup The committee shall comprise no less than five members of the Society The three major segments of the Society membership government private and academic shall be reflected in the committee composition Members shall be appointed on recommendation of the committee chair Members may serve consecutive terms The ASPRS President and Executive Director or designee shall serve as ex officio members Responsible for attending meetings held in person or through telecons addressing and evaluating all charges to the committee other functions as assigned by the Chair Committee Objectives As needed form subcommittees to address a broad scope of data preservation and archiving issues Develop and maintain a strategic plan for this committee Formulate recommendations regarding standards and procedures used by archiving facilities and post on the DPAC web site Maintain register roster of archiving facilities and archival holdings to serve over the Internet Organize and conduct technical sessions forums and workshops for data preservation and archiving Establish mechanisms for investigating new technologies regarding data preservation and archiving and the potential impact of new technologies on preservation and archiving Liaise with ASPRS Division Directors ASPRS Committee Chairs and outside organizations on matters relating to data preservation and archiving and for assistance in gathering and disseminating technical information and membership expertise Committee Authority Cannot expend funds or make other commitments on behalf of the Society unless specifically approved by the ASPRS Executive Committee or Board of Directors Cannot speak for the Society Approved by Board

    of analog and digital data Vision Statement ASPRS believes that future generations will need access to historical spatial and spectral data to make temporal comparisons for economic social scientific and political applications Mission Statement Create sponsor a standing committee consisting of ASPRS members from private government and academic entities who are knowledgeable about data preservation and archiving practices to encourage and assist the committee s constituency in their data preservation and archiving activities To nurture a sense of responsibility for data preservation and archiving within the Society membership and to organizations represented by the membership Niche Statement The scope of the committee s attention includes all forms of remotely sensed Earth oriented photography digital camera videography and sensor data collected in the visible ultraviolet VNIR SWIR LWIR and microwave spectral regions The committee will confine its responsibilities to sensor systems covering the Earth s lands oceans and atmospheres This scope also addresses all geospatial data including maps GIS and GPS datasets Goals and Tactical Actions Because there is a wide variety of data types and an even wider array of preservation and archiving issues the committee will function through subcommittees as needed having manageable foci Below are the tactical actions required to achieve the goals Develop and maintain a strategic plan for this committee Formulate preservation and archival recommendations or procedures and post to the DPAC web site Organize and conduct technical sessions forums and workshops for data preservation and archiving Establish mechanisms for investigating new technologies regarding data preservation and archiving and the potential impact of new technologies on preservation and archiving Recommend the identification and use of an image metadata standard for describing image data Click Here to Report a Problem on this Page Report a Problem Please complete all required fields Your Name Invalid Input Email Address

    Diego April 27 2010 San Antonio November 15 2009 Working Strategic Plan Action Items Excel Spreadsheet last updated 7 27 2010 The Committee uses this to address its role in the ASPRS Strategic Plan and to track action items Awards International Educational Literature Award IELA IELA Application The SAIC Estes Memorial Teaching Award ASPRS Committee Handbook E PD Excerpt Committee charges per the Society s Handbook revised December 9 2009 This is currently being edited Committee Objectives The ASPRS Education and Professional Development Committee is responsible for the education program of the Society The Committee provides leadership guidance and assistance to various educationally oriented activities within the Society including publications awards and conference meeting technical programs The committee also maintains liaisons with educationally oriented groups in government academia and private industry Committee Makeup The Education and Professional Development Committee is headed by a Chairperson appointed by the ASPRS President and approved by the Executive Committee The Chairperson serves a term of three years from date of appointment The Chairperson is responsible for planning and conducting Committee meetings maintaining Committee records producing an annual report of Committee activities and reporting to the ASPRS Executive Committee and Board of Directors as well as cooperating with the ASPRS Awards Certification Long Range Planning Workshops and other Society Committees The Chairperson appoints a Deputy Chair who must be approved by the Education and Professional Development Committee who will serve as Chairperson in his her absence The Education and Professional Development Committee consists of at a minimum at least one representative from each ASPRS Division Committee Authority The ASPRS Education and Professional Development Committee cannot commit or expend funds on behalf of the Society without specific and prior consent of the ASPRS Executive Committee or the Board of Directors Click Here to Report a Problem

    the committee responsible for matters dealing with publishing Photogrammetric Engineering Remote Sensing PE RS the Journal Policy Committee s membership includes the entire constituency of ASPRS Vision Statement PE RS is the major vehicle through which ASPRS fulfills its vision of providing the highest quality spatial information to all people for effective decision making and better understanding to improve their quality of life The Journal Policy Committee will ensure that PE RS fulfills that vision Mission Statement JPC s mission is to ensure that PE RS fully supports the mission of ASPRS to advance knowledge and improve understanding of mapping sciences to promote the responsible application of photogrammetry remote sensing geographic information systems and supporting technologies Niche Statement JPC fills the following niches Responsibility for editorial and policy matters related to publishing PE RS Responsibility for ensuring that PE RS addresses but is not limited to the Society s niches as identified in the current ASPRS Niche Matrix to promote establish and facilitate core and supporting technologies integrate and apply core and supporting technologies and advance responsible practice Responsibility for reviewing complaints lodged by authors about manuscript reviews and if necessary acting as the final arbiter regarding the acceptability of papers for publication Goals and Tactical Actions Goal 1 Ensure quality of PE RS content Tactical Actions Strengthen PE RS review process by clarifying acceptance standards limiting number of times a paper is returned for revision conducting rigorous reviews Solicit papers from leading researchers Solicit special thematic issues Goal 2 Ensure timeliness of PE RS content Tactical Actions Streamline the review process Maintain an acceptable backlog of peer reviewed articles Investigate avenues for providing more pages in PE RS for publication of peer reviewed Click Here to Report a Problem on this Page Report a Problem Please complete all required

    regions offer registration for regional meetings at a member and non member price and encourage the non members attending to fill out a membership application and turn it in before the close of the technical session The inflated non member registration fee can be used to pay a portion of the membership cost with the region paying the balance Goal 3 To have regions actively participate in membership retention Tactics Encourage region secretaries or membership liaisons to send Welcome Letters to new members and special meeting notices encouraging them to participate in regional activities Encourage member retention by offering registration price breaks for members to attend workshops and technical sessions Encourage regions to send friendly dues reminder letters to those members in arrears Encourage regions to reward members for their individual efforts in attracting new members For example presenting coffee mugs at regional banquets to those members who have introduced x new members to the Society that year Goal 4 Increase the involvement of student members in regional activities Most student members do not have the means opportunity to attend the national meetings so participation in the regional activities is very important Tactics Establish student liaisons for each of the student chapters and invite them to attend the Region Board of Directors Meetings so that they can report region activities to their chapter Reduce registration fees for students at regional meetings In the Florida Region for example student registration is 10 versus the full registration fee of 75 00 Establish a job board at regional meetings and invite students to post their resumes Organize a student session at the technical meetings and invite students to present their papers Establish travel scholarships to allow students to attend the national meetings in order to present a paper poster Make extra social function

    historical development of photogrammetry remote sensing geographic information systems and other mapping science technologies is important to a full understanding of the scope and significance of those sciences in the current milieu and to provide a basis for forecasting future trends A key means for capturing that history is to record the past activities and accomplishments of pioneers and leaders in the field Mission Statement The mission of the Memorial Lecture Committee is to develop a body of knowledge concerning photogrammetry remote sensing geographic information systems and other mapping science technologies which is based on the achievements in the past of outstanding scientists and practitioners That knowledge is presented to the society by memorializing outstanding leaders in the field through lectures which are subsequently published Committee Responsibilities Coordinate the preparation and presentation of the memorial lectures to be given at the annual conventions of ASPRS Coordinate with the Executive Director and Convention Director in arranging for memorial lectures at each annual convention Nominate the persons to be memorialized Nominate the persons to present the lectures Coordinate with headquarters staff in assuring proper publication of the lectures Click Here to Report a Problem on this Page Report a Problem Please complete

    Society In accordance with the ASPRS Bylaws the Chair of the Nominating Committee is the immediate Past President of the Society in any given year The Chair is responsible for organizing the requisite meetings of the committee members to arrive at a slate of two or more ASPRS members to be put forth as formal candidates for the office of Vice President of ASPRS The procedures should be in accordance with the ASPRS Bylaws Committee Objectives Prepare a list of candidates for the office of Vice President on or before a date that is twenty weeks prior to the date of the Annual Meeting Assure that the nominees selected follow a rotation from year to year that represents government industry and academia Assure that an announcement of the nominations is made in a Society publication received by the members eighteen weeks prior to the Annual Meeting Certify that all nominees are qualified and willing to serve Assure that all requirements set forth by the ASPRS Bylaws are met Committee Authority The Committee cannot expend funds or make other commitments on behalf of the Society unless specifically approved by the ASPRS Executive Committee or the Board of Directors The Committee cannot
