  • Atlanta Leaders Imagine a Day Without Water - City of Atlanta, Watershed Management
billion gallon reservoir With a growing population and finite water resources we have long term water supply challenges that must be addressed to meet current and future needs Mayor Kasim Reed said It is now imperative to restore the system to the long term reliability that sustains the world s busiest airport dozens of Fortune 500 companies and more than 1 2 million people each day Atlanta still uses water mains built in the 1890s They are fragile and very vulnerable to the elements Losing water for just one day would cost our economy 100 million To ensure that Atlanta continues to maintain a safe and reliable drinking water system for the next 100 years the Department of Watershed Management is launching the water supply program to increase the City s water reserve from three days to a minimum of 30 days In comparison Washington D C has a 36 hour water supply backup Water is our most precious natural resource DWM Commissioner Jo Ann Macrina said Our investment in the water supply program will ensure we have a readily available drinking water supply for future generations so they will not have to experience a day without water Long after we re all gone this quarry will ensure our children and grandchildren will have clean safe drinking water The plan will include construction of a five mile tunnel which will transport raw water between the Chattahoochee River the Hemphill and Chattahoochee water treatment plants and the new reservoir I applaud Mayor Reed and Commissioner Macrina for their vision in embarking on this impressive plan to ensure that Atlanta can avoid water crises like the ones facing other regions of the country and therefore negatively impacting our economy More than 43 percent of our country is currently experiencing drought conditions and while it s hard to imagine after the wet weather the Southeast has seen recently we know all too well how quickly patterns can change said Heather McTeer Toney E P A Region 4 Administrator With the changing climate it is obvious that with every time our water supply is disrupted we need to place a higher value a true cost on the water that we consume With Atlanta s development of this reservoir for storage of up to 30 days supply of water they are increasing their resilience against threats that could compromise their supply of water Sports teams venues and fans all depend on the City s water supply and Scott Jenkins General Manager of Mercedes Benz Stadium spoke to the Atlanta Falcons attention to the subject Water is an important element in the design of Mercedes Benz Stadium as we seek to become the first professional sports venue to achieve LEED Platinum certification Utilizing low flow and no flow fixtures and capturing 680 000 gallons of stormwater to use for cooling towers and irrigation the Falcons will match their recent on field successes with big environmental wins Americans expect that water will flow from their taps every
