  • Trends in land use and crop acreages in Karnataka and their repercussions - ePrints@ATREE
    than indebtedness and socio economic stress which are cited as proximate reasons behind farmers suicides we are not exactly sure about what drives these reasons In this context one poorly understood area in Indian agriculture is the impact of the structural change in agricultural land use on the long term socioeconomic ecological viability of agriculture We believe that the trend analysis of land use and crop acreage changes provides one of the missing linkages between agricultural policies and their field level impacts on agriculture This premise is based on the facts that a any policy related to agriculture if effective brings changes in productive use of agricultural and related land use categories and b Ecological economic and social problems in agriculture at the field level are strongly linked to the current crop acreage or the changes associated with it In this background the objective of this article is to analyse district level trends in land use and crop acreages over a period of four decades in order to help strengthen the linkage between various land use changes and sustainability in production landscapes The result of this analysis indicates a diverse set of changes in land use and crop acreages across

  • Landscape-level effects on avifauna within tropical agriculture in the Western Ghats: Insights for management and conservation - ePrints@ATREE
    two nearby human dominated landscapes that dramatically differed in their pattern of land cover First how does the proximity of intact forest patches affect bird community composition within agricultural landscapes Second can simple remote sensing derived measures brightness wetness and NDVI be used to estimate native bird species composition within those landscapes In both landscapes as distance to intact forest decreased the similarity in bird community composition between agricultural areas and intact forest increased This suggests that the retention of tropical forest bird communities within human dominated landscapes critically depends on the maintenance of nearby intact forest In an answer to the second question the remote sensing measures correlated with forest affiliated avian species richness in only one of the two landscapes reflecting an ecological difference between the two in the response of forest bird species to local agricultural conditions In the landscape where a correlation was found there was high variation in vegetative structure which strongly impacted both the remote sensing measures and forest bird species richness In the other landscape forest species richness strongly correlated with changes in tree species composition in the agriculture a factor that could not be detected by the remote sensing metrics In order

    a microsporidian isolate Nosema sp from the lepidopteran teak defoliator Hyblaea puera Cramer The spores were ovo cylindrical and had a mean size of 5 1 2 8 mm The midgut and fat body were the primary organs infected by the microsporidium Subsequently infection was observed in Malphigian tubules tracheal epithelium and gonads The sequence of infection observed was midgut fat body tracheal membrane Malpighian tubule gonad Infection of this microsporidium produced a marked negative effect on the growth and development of larvae The weight of healthy larvae increased about 22 times from the 3rd instar to pupation while the increase was about 12 times in the infected larvae Rearing experiments conducted in the laboratory revealed a high potential for horizontal transmission 90 of the microsporidium among the defoliator larvae developing together A nearly equal degree of vertical transmission 88 7 was also observed from the infected females to the progeny larvae The observations reported here indicate the prospect of the microsporidium as a bio control agent against the defoliator pest if exploited properly Small subunit rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this microsporidium differed from Nosema bombycis of silk moth by only two nucleotides The teak moth and the

    ravikanth vol 71 2010 pdf Published Version Restricted to Registered users only Download 552Kb Request a copy Abstract Camptothecin and 10 hydroxycamptothecin are two important precursors for the synthesis of the clinically useful anticancer drugs topotecan and irinotecan In recent years efforts have been made to identify novel plant and endophytic fungal sources of camptothecin and 10 hydroxycamptothecin In this study we have isolated endophytic fungi strains from Apodytes dimidiata Icacinaceae a medium sized tree from the Western Ghats India The fungi were identified as Fusarium solani using both ITS rDNA sequencing and spore morphology Two strains MTCC 9667 and MTCC 9668 were isolated both of which produced camptothecin and 9 methoxycamptothecin in their mycelia one of the strains MTCC 9668 also produced 10 hydroxycamptothecin though in small amounts The yields of camptothecin in MTCC 9667 and MTCC 9668 were 37 and 53 lg 100 g respectively after 4 days of incubation in broth culture The yields of 10 hydroxycamptothecin and 9 methoxycamptothecin in MTCC 9668 were 8 2 and 44 9 lg 100 g respectively Further research in optimizing the culture conditions of these fungal strains might permit their application for the production of camptothecin and 10 hydroxycamptothecin Item

  • Patterns of seed rain and seedling regeneration in abandoned agricultural clearings in a seasonally dry tropical forest in India - ePrints@ATREE
    Request a copy Abstract Forest recovery in abandoned pastures and agricultural fields is often impeded therefore it is important to understand the factors limiting regeneration Patterns of seed arrival and regeneration in five abandoned agricultural clearings nested within a seasonally dry tropical forest in India were examined along five transects radiating from the forest edge into the clearings Wind dispersed seeds dominated the seed arrival in clearings compared with vertebrate dispersed seeds 5563 wind dispersed seeds and 1094 vertebrate dispersed seeds of 14 and 13 tree species respectively were recorded Numbers of the former declined steeply with increasing distance from the forest whereas the latter showed no evident pattern with distance Seeds of the invasive herb Chromolaena odorata were abundant in clearings Although wind dispersed seeds greatly outnumbered vertebrate dispersed seeds seedlings and saplings of vertebrate dispersed species were three times more abundant than those of wind dispersed species indicating distinct differences in patterns of actual and effective seed dispersal This points to recruitment limitation and suggests that seed arrival may not be the principal barrier to regeneration in these clearings Nonetheless the clearings are likely to revert to forest over time Item Type Article Additional Information Copyright of this
