    Simon and Schuster On my recent Author for Earth Day 2015 visit kids learned about the dangers of plastic bags to leatherback turtles and how automobile exhaust is detrimental to polar bears Mermaid Tales 7 Dream of the Blue Turtle features a leatherback turtle while my newest book The Polar Bear Express has Kiki and friends helping a lost polar bear cub In addition to talking about helping our planet we took action As an Author for Earth Day I agreed to make a donation to conservation The kids chose between several organizations I showed pictures of the various animals helped by each and the Humane Society of the United States was the winner aided by some adorable animal headshots So perhaps I should rephrase my second sentence Mermaids care more for their environment than SOME humans do but definitely not the wonderful kids at R B Walter Elementary School Elementary 2014 at AMITY ELEMENTARY CENTER Douglassville PA USA DEBBIE EMPOWERS YOUNG READERS AT AMITY I ve participated in Authors for Earth Day in the past but was delighted to visit Amity Elementary Center this year in conjunction with Earth Day and the release of my newest Mermaid Tales book Dream of the Blue Turtle Usually schools vote on the day of the author visit but I asked AEC if they could vote in advance I was delighted when they chose the Whale and Dolphin Conservatory after researching the various organizations The conservatory is a perfect choice for a school because I was able to make a donation toward adopting three different animals one for each of the sessions I did with the delightful kids at AEC For the Kindergarten and First graders I adopted a dolphin named Mischief in their name The second and third graders were thrilled to

    everything from cotton and cactus skeletons to rocks and sea shells as they filled their nature journals with sensory words The morning was topped off with voting to find out which organization would receive conservations funds sponsored this year by an anonymous donor The kids ended up splitting the money to provide milkweed for our desert butterflies in the Southwest Monarch Study and for burrowing owl relocations through Wild at Heart I got the chance to feed fuzzy burrowing owl chicks when I stopped by Wild at Heart with our donation check They also decided to coordinate an extra school wide campaign to collect peanut butter for the bears at a local wildlife rehabilitation center I was thrilled that they will take that initiative and look forward to hearing how that turns out Great for kids to be moved by the animals needs 2012 at KIVA ELELMENTARY in Scottsdale Arizona USA BARB SPEAKS FOR NATURE AT KIVA The students at Kiva Elementary School voted for Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center www southwestwildlife org a wildlife rescue and rehab facility specializing in native mammals fox javelina coyote mountain lion and BEAR While touring the rehab center educator Kim Carr introduced me to Tahoe Griz and Igasho 3 year old youngsters who stole my heart 70 of the animals at the center are rehabilitated and released back into the wild 2013 at QUAIL RUN ELEMENTARY and THORNYDALE ELEMENTARY in Tucson Arizona USA BARB CELEBRATES EARTH DAY AT QUAIL RUN THORNYDALE Yes that is a bat pollinating a blossom of the saguaro cactus use your imaginations Great visit to Quail Run and Thornydale Elementary Schools in Marana AZ as part of Authors for Earth Day Classes enjoyed my presentation of the book Desert Digits and also learned about conservation agencies that help Arizona wildlife
