    Success Event Resources In the News spreading the word website www amyludwigvanderwater com www poemfarm amylv com email amy amylv com video Forest has a Song Amy Ludwig VanDerwater award winning author Holland NY USA SCHOOL VISITS PreK 6 Working with large groups of students I share the sounds and stories of The Poem Farm Acting out poems playing with meter and rhyme holding objects from the natural world students learn to develop their own eyes and ears for finding and shaping the poems of their lives While this program varies depending on the age of participating students its focus remains the same from silly to serious poems can change us from the inside out as readers as writers as humans Year s of participation 2015 A4ED school visit photos blurbs 2015 at THOMAS A EDISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in Tonawanda NY USA AMY GIVES BACK AT THOMAS A EDISON Librarian Gretchen Siebert and teachers and students prepared for our March visit with such beauty and intention The school s literacy committee paired the day with their Parents as Reading Partners project themed Read Reuse Recycle In the weeks leading up to our time together student ambassadors made public service announcements teaching all classes about the nominee organizations Teacher Susan Hirsch wrote a skit titled A Clean World Stew which was performed by students to kick off PARP Children drew posters with an Earth Day theme and by the time I arrived the school was full of artwork poetry and research celebrating the beauties of nature Walking into the auditorium I looked up to see an enormous rainbow of hands called Hands to Help Earth Day Each student had traced his or her hand and had written one way to be good to our planet on the paper palm I knew

    after reading Marsh Music the students become part of a frog orchestra to perform a frog symphony With Going Home the Mystery of Animal Migration older grades can do a Readers Theater For Pre K K I include puppets and other props For Grades 1 5 I am happy to gear my program to a course of study such as the oceans rain forest Arctic etc Year s of participation 2011 2013 A4ED school visit photos blurbs 2013 at PINE JOG ELEMENTARY in West Palm Beach FL MARIANNE CELEBRATES EARTH DAY AT PINE JOG I loved visiting this school sharing my nature awareness books with Grades K 4 600 kids in all The first graders sang my Over in the Forest book as I showed the illustrations on a big screen to Grades K 2 and the older grades performed a Readers Theater using my animal migration book Going Home What a thrill to see how they used my interactive books connecting them to nature and celebrating our earth Pine Jog Elementary is a wonderful school that has an environmental and science focus built to green building standards They have the most amazing gardens including a beautiful butterfly garden where the photo attached was taken with Frances Fry the reading coach who arranged my visit I am holding a bag of amazing veggies and herbs that they gave me from their garden and Frances is holding my latest book What s in the Garden photos of the kids giving my donation to Pine Jog Environmental Center The school decided to give my donation to the Pine Jog Environmental Center with which they are affiliated A non profit organization it preserves 135 acres of natural Florida habitat Their mission is to develop provide and model education programs which foster an awareness

    hour presentations and writing workshops include animated readings slide shows and plenty of time for student questions I also do preschool readings In addition to the animated readings and presentations I also do nonfiction writing workshops for students and adults as well as teacher in service workshops Year s of participation 2011 2012 2013 2015 A4ED school visit photos blurbs 2015 at MESQUITE ELEMENTARY Gilbert AZ USA CONRAD GIVES BACK AT MESQUITE Author Conrad Storad is proud to be a part of Authors for Earth Day On February 13 the Arizona children s author did presentations for more than 600 students at Mesquite Elementary School in Gilbert Arizona Storad also read to students and parents that evening as part of the school s special Family Literacy Night event Librarian Fancy Nancy Masterson and some of the Mesquite students treated Storad and his good pal the Story Monster to a delicious pizza lunch Story Monster preferred snacking on stories instead of pizza After my visit the kids voted for the Phoenix Zoo Conservation Fund and I donated 500 for them I returned on Earth Day to appear on the school s video morning news and announcements and this photo was taken with 5th graders Evan Smith and Luke Andelin An East Valley Tribune reporter was there as well for a short interview 2013 at COPPER RIM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Globe AZ USA CONRAD CELEBRATES EARTH DAY AT COPPER RIM I ve now been blessed with the chance to complete more than 1 000 author visits to schools and libraries throughout our amazing country Over the past 20 years I have had the pleasure of reading stories doing presentations and running writing workshops for more than 930 000 students Several of those visits have been completed as part of the Authors for Earth Day program Wow There is nothing quite like the energy and enthusiasm of an elementary school audience to recharge your own enthusiasm for this wonderful business of writing and reading My goal of reading to 1 million students looms closer with each visit I hope to do many many more as part of Authors for Earth Day This year the students and staff at Copper Rim Elementary in Globe Arizona did their best to recharge my batteries We had a fantastic day together sharing our appreciation of science and the wonders of the natural world I also had the pleasure of presenting Fang and Stinger An Arachnid Story my brand new picture book to several classes of engaged listeners Librarian Laurie Player Weller and the teachers at Copper Rim had their students supercharged They appreciate books and were ready to listen and learn Their smiles were contagious Their questions were focused and their comments were witty and fun As part of the A4ED program the students overwhelming voted to contribute a portion of my fee to the Phoenix s Zoo s Conservation Fund Nice choice kids This is the third year in a row my A4ED audience has voted for

    fun we had in these pictures and the big check was sent off the next day Can t wait for next year A4ED is the best 2014 at ROBERT FROST ELEMENTARY in Mount Prospect IL USA BARB EMPOWERS YOUNG READERS AT ROBERT FROST WOW The third year participating in Authors for Earth Day was the best yet The staff and students at Robert Frost Elementary put out welcome banners throughout the school Each grade level of students that I saw in my presentations knew more and more about the national parks until the 5th graders were educating me We all talked about writing getting inspiration from nature and laughed as students dressed up as John Muir in long white beards and Theodore Roosevelt complete with stick on mustaches The best part of the day was a lunch with students where I got to spend an hour of one on one time with a small group of articulate passionate students who love reading and writing They asked such perceptive questions like what is the hardest part of writing the revisions and what would you be if you weren t a writer secretary of state ha I wouldn t get hired but I d save some trees The classes voted to send our donation to The Sierra Club the long standing environmental organization started by John Muir in 1892 I ve heard some Sierra Club thank yous are on their way to the school right now Anyhow thanks to Robert Frost Elementary for another great Authors For Earth Day visit Where will I be next year I can t wait to find out 2013 at JOHN MUIR ELEMENTARY in Madison Wisconsin USA the town where Muir went to school HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN MUIR HAPPY EARTH DAY John Muir the father of our national parks grew up in Wisconsin and attended college in Madison so it isn t too surprising that there is an elementary school in that city named for him However I didn t expect that the school would learn about my book The Camping Trip that Changed America John Muir Theodore Roosevelt and Our National Parks and invite me to celebrate John Muir s 175th Birthday with them Plus the visit was scheduled for Earth Day April 22nd Muir s birthday is April 21st When I approached the school about participating in Author s for Earth Day there was one response Perfect Almost 300 2nd through 5th graders spent two sessions with me in their gym learning about using the five senses to explore nature and to write stories With a variety of multimedia we learned about my trip to Yosemite and spent hands on time learning about giant sequoias their seeds and cones We also had two students dress up and play Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir 2 of the top 10 environmentalists of all time As both Muir and Roosevelt wound up being represented by young women the laughter was infectious you haven t lived til you ve
