    plants and trees As a not for profit organization BBG exists to serve as gardens and educational grounds for the Belizean community and visitors to enjoy and take advantage of as well as a scientific and living germplasm resource pool for botanical and horticultural institutions world wide The focus of our collections is native and exotic plants of Belize as well as non native and non invasive plant species We strive to educate local communities and international visitors of the importance of protecting native plants and ecosystems BBG is financed mainly by adjacent duPlooys Jungle Lodge through the visitation and generosity of the local community and international visitors and through funds granted to us by various institutions In addition support and donations from visitors and loyal plant lovers helps us to reach our project goals and annual budget We are fortunate to be in an area rich with tropical flora and fauna diversity It takes 10 full time employees conducting multitudes of jobs with the help of volunteers and interns to keep the gardens running If you want to know how BBG got started please view our history Plants People and BBG There are millions of species of plants and animals on earth millions of solutions and strategies for survival and each species belongs to an intricate web with exponential interdependent species for survival Plants have provided us with food clothing medicine the very air we breathe and more including unquantifiable ecosystem services they provide for us that make our climate and environment habitable Plants rely on their relationships with other plants animals fungi viruses bacteria and protists to maintain healthy populations These combinations form ecosystems and perform the functions that maintain the balance of life on earth The amount of biodiversity the collective variety of all life on earth

    duPlooy s Jungle Lodge A keen interest in restoring this severely eroded land and Ken s love of orchids and palms led him to start collecting these plants for conservation purposes Belize s main commercial fruits were and still are bananas and citrus High taxes expensive fuel and imported tools and machinery make it expensive to compete on world agriculture markets so Ken s plan was to begin experimenting with tropical fruits which could be grown organically and command higher prices on the market Plants were collected and recorded so in 1997 when Brendan Sayers from the Irish National Garden came along to collect Belizean orchids and palms for Ireland the first collaboration with another garden began Brendan noted that Belize did not have a botanic garden and suggested that we register as Belize Botanic Gardens A Board of Directors was established and the garden registered with the Government of Belize as a non profit organization Since then BBG has been collecting studying cataloging and conserving plants and remains the only botanic garden in Belize BBG exists to serve as gardens and educational grounds for Belizeans and Visitors to enjoy and take advantage of as well as a scientific and living germplasm resource pool for botanical and horticultural institutions world wide The focus of our collections is native and exotic plants of Belize as well as non native and non invasive plant species We strive to educate local communities and international visitors of the importance of protecting native plants and ecosystems Ken died in August of 2001 and daughter Heather and her husband Brett ran the garden until 2010 when they left to work at Naples Botanical Garden in Florida In 2012 Judy stepped in as Director of the gardens and secured funding from the European Union s Belize Rurual

    see a sign for Clarissa Falls Stay on the Western Highway another half mile then turn left on the Chial Road a dirt road with a concrete bus stop at the corner Follow this road and the signs for about four miles to the very end Do not make any left or right turns From the Western border take the Western Highway east towards San Ignacio and Belmopan Go through San Jose Succotz village then continue about 2 miles Turn right on the Chial Road which is a dirt road with a concrete bus stop on the corner Follow this road and the signs for about four miles to the very end Do not make any left or right turns From the Macal River We are up river from Chaa Creek Tie up your canoe at duPlooy s beach and walk up the steps to the duPlooy s BBG Office Just getting here is an adventure Taxis Shuttles and Buses You can arrive by catching a taxi from San Ignacio Town for 25 35 US depending on the driver Set the fare before you go If you feel adventurous to walk or hike for a couple hours in to BBG local buses are available every half an hour from San Ignacio heading to the Guatemala Border Ask the bus conductor to drop you off by Chial Road Junction before you start on your scenic walk Or call us to book a special Round Trip Shuttle The shuttle is 35 US 70 BZ per person 2 person minimum and includes a Self Guided Tour Booklet and Entrance Ask for our Special Tours When you arrive in our parking area come to the office at duPlooy s Jungle Lodge and our able staff will be there to help you set up your

    you won t miss The Native Orchid House See our collection of over 100 species of native Belizean orchids Read more about the Native Orchid House or browse through our orchid photos Plants of the Maya Discover plants used by the ancient Maya for ritual medicine and daily living For more information see our Plants of the Maya page Firetower Check out the vista from our hill top lookout You get a bird s eye view of the gardens and the magnificent Maya Mountains emerging from the forest from the top of our 25ft fire tower This fire tower was graciously donated by Amin Bedran of Pine Lumber Company and it is a part of our Mountain Pine Ridge habitat It is a replica of the towers used for fire management in the Mountain Pine Ridge reserve Savanna Our more recent habitat addition at BBG is the Savanna The savanna is part of Darwin Initiative funded Savanna research and conservation project For more information on the Savanna project see the Darwin Savanna Ecosystem Assessment Hamilton Bird Hide Spy on the least grebes black bellied whistling ducks and northern Jacanas from this hideaway on the banks of the wetland habitat while you re enjoying the sound of nature A crack from a twig can startle you It s just an agouti seeking hidden seeds that were buried a long time The Hamilton Bird Hide is dedicated to Nita and Clarke Hamilton who have conducted numerous birding tours annually to BBG They have also helped to develop a bird list of duPlooys BBG and assisted in updating the list several times Palms of Belize Display Thanks to the International Palm Society for sponsoring our palm education exhibit you can enjoy a display of native palms and their products at the garden Students

    us manage our plant collections we created a software application for managing living plant collections for botanical gardens With Bauble we are able to record historical data on all the plants in the Garden Not only did we create Bauble for our personal use we allow anyone to use it freely and without restriction Orchids Currently our most important collection is our orchid collection Since 1997 we have been working with Brendan Sayers of the National Botanic Gardens Glasnevin Ireland to collect grow and study the orchids of Belize So far this collaboration has resulted in twenty orchids species added to the known orchid flora of Belize including one newly described species to science We also maintain a complete list of orchids native to Belize with photos of the majority of the species here Palms and Cycads Belize is home to approximately forty native palm species One Schippia concolor is endemic to Belize meaning that it can only be found occurring naturally in Belize Our palm collection contains nearly all the exotic palms of Belize as well as an additional fifty palm species from around the world With help from Montgomery Botanical Center we are quickly becoming a center for conservation of cycads native to Belize Come and visit our Cycad Circle to see some of the exotic species we have on display at the Gardens Included in our palm collection are two Cuban palm species which are threatened with extinction By maintaining and conserving these palms here at Belize Botanic Gardens and other gardens with these palm species we are able to offer insurance that these species can continue If anything happened to wipe out these palms in Cuba such as natural disasters or human factors we would be able to send seeds or seedlings to replant This is
