    February 2015 BBG will offer short term classes for a nominal fee See Course Calendar and how to Register Online to both Belizeans and Visitors for a nominal fee If you can t attend one of our classes you might consider donating a scholarship for a Belizean who needs to learn a job skill Part of the program has been a 5 day Introduction to Birding and Plant ID Course and starting in 2015 we will add intermediate and advanced courses All of these courses will be available to the public both locally and internationally for a small fee which will help sustain scholarships for students who attend the job skills training courses If you have a group with a particular interest who would like to take one of our classes let us know and we ll schedule it for you Workshops in the garden designed to give people a fun day out where they can learn hands on draw people to the garden and promote the interaction between tourists and local people These include a Maya Healers Workshop where people tour our Maya Medicine Trail learn about native medicinal plants and make tamales over a wood fired fogon for their lunch 3 levels of flower arranging soap making and nutrition Calendar price Belize Botanic Gardens offers exciting training opportunities to individuals who are interested in taking up a career in gardening This training program is funded through a grant from the European Development Fund under the Belize Rural Development Project II administered by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and its partner duPlooys Jungle Lodge The Title of the action under this grant is Improving the Quality of Life of Rural Household by developing Capacity to find an create employment in gardening and other plant related areas has

    Let us know your areas of skill and interest More information Although we ask that you work a regular week Monday to Friday on the weekends we encourage you to take advantage of the sites of Cayo Belize Thanks to BBG s main supporter duPlooy s Jungle Lodge you can join certain scheduled excursions to destinations around the district at no or little cost You may also be able to use canoes when available or join scheduled horseback tours Best of all the Macal River borders the garden and there is a lovely beach on the river a perfect spot for a swim and a rest We are in a remote location so consider bringing a friend To join the program we require two work volunteers or education interns related references These can be sent by post or email If by post please mail to Belize Botanic Gardens P O Box 180 San Ignacio Cayo Belize The cost for the program is 350USD per month which includes basic accommodation a 2 bedroom apartment with a bathroom living area laundry room and kitchen or you can pay 550US a month if you want food included and we will provide you with groceries A 10 deposit is required to confirm your stay with us Many volunteers want to know why we charge for the volunteer program since they will be working with us Unfortunately with a very limited staff and many projects going on we are stretched thinly at the best of times We are happy to have the help and appreciate your work but it does mean more staff hours to co ordinate volunteers We also need to take care of feeding and boarding you and since we already run the garden on a shoestring budget every dollar counts We feel
