    a sign for Clarissa Falls Stay on the Western Highway another half mile then turn left on the Chial Road a dirt road with a concrete bus stop at the corner Follow this road and the signs for about four miles to the very end Do not make any left or right turns From the Western border take the Western Highway east towards San Ignacio and Belmopan Go through San Jose Succotz village then continue about 2 miles Turn right on the Chial Road which is a dirt road with a concrete bus stop on the corner Follow this road and the signs for about four miles to the very end Do not make any left or right turns From the Macal River We are up river from Chaa Creek Tie up your canoe at duPlooy s beach and walk up the steps to the duPlooy s BBG Office Just getting here is an adventure Taxis Shuttles and Buses You can arrive by catching a taxi from San Ignacio Town for 25 35 US depending on the driver Set the fare before you go If you feel adventurous to walk or hike for a couple hours in to BBG local buses are available every half an hour from San Ignacio heading to the Guatemala Border Ask the bus conductor to drop you off by Chial Road Junction before you start on your scenic walk Or call us to book a special Round Trip Shuttle The shuttle is 35 US 70 BZ per person 2 person minimum and includes a Self Guided Tour Booklet and Entrance Ask for our Special Tours When you arrive in our parking area come to the office at duPlooy s Jungle Lodge and our able staff will be there to help you set up your tour

    manage our plant collections we created a software application for managing living plant collections for botanical gardens With Bauble we are able to record historical data on all the plants in the Garden Not only did we create Bauble for our personal use we allow anyone to use it freely and without restriction Orchids Currently our most important collection is our orchid collection Since 1997 we have been working with Brendan Sayers of the National Botanic Gardens Glasnevin Ireland to collect grow and study the orchids of Belize So far this collaboration has resulted in twenty orchids species added to the known orchid flora of Belize including one newly described species to science We also maintain a complete list of orchids native to Belize with photos of the majority of the species here Palms and Cycads Belize is home to approximately forty native palm species One Schippia concolor is endemic to Belize meaning that it can only be found occurring naturally in Belize Our palm collection contains nearly all the exotic palms of Belize as well as an additional fifty palm species from around the world With help from Montgomery Botanical Center we are quickly becoming a center for conservation of cycads native to Belize Come and visit our Cycad Circle to see some of the exotic species we have on display at the Gardens Included in our palm collection are two Cuban palm species which are threatened with extinction By maintaining and conserving these palms here at Belize Botanic Gardens and other gardens with these palm species we are able to offer insurance that these species can continue If anything happened to wipe out these palms in Cuba such as natural disasters or human factors we would be able to send seeds or seedlings to replant This is one

    20 new orchid records for Belize including 1 species new to science The new species Pleurothallis duplooyii named after Ken duPlooy has a bloom about the size of a flea It is a good reminder that not all orchids are showy corsage pieces It s nothing personal but we don t have hybrids or foreigners in the Native Orchid House so make sure to take a closer look For your information Most of our collection of orchids are in bloom during the month of April and May If you are visiting any other time you might be able to see one or two other species in bloom but the Black Orchid Belize s National Flower is in bloom everyday Keeping Orchids Wild Brassavola Cucullata Belize is a member of CITES an international agreement to protect plant and animal species in danger of extinction through international trade Orchids are protected under CITES and that makes it illegal to remove orchids from the country of Belize without a permit Do your part for orchid conservation and do not collect orchids or other plants or animals unless you have a valid reason and have obtained the proper permits If you purchase an orchid make sure it comes from a cultivated collection and was not taken from the wild BBG does not participate in selling native orchids Our collection is mainly for educational and research purpose One Scoop of Orchids Please Did you know that vanilla the same ingredient in your ice cream comes from an orchid Well it does And not just any orchid but a native Belizean orchid Ask your guide to show you the vanilla orchid in our Native Orchid House at BBG Orchids are known for their amazing variety colors shapes and sizes There are about 300 different ones in
