  • Matt Jankowski — Willingness vs Ability
remember being in the hospital bed and literally not being able to turn over my side It s crazy because it doesn t occur to you to me at least how much of your core and non leg muscles are involved in twisting your body to rotate over on your side I d say to go ahead and try it but that was sort of my big realization while that was going on that I couldn t have possibly understood before experiencing that what exactly it would be like Likewise I don t think I could instruct someone on which muscles they d have to not use to get the same experience and even if I could I don t think you could do it It s almost impossible to actively disable something you can use to get things done more easily Now one thing I have noticed and I think I can describe I ve only noticed recently with my rehab walks around the park In either a cross country race or anything longer than a mile on the track you re battling your own mind as much as your body maybe more It s as much about what you can make your body do as it is what your body can actually do There are times late in a race where you know at some deep level that your body actually has more in it and you could go faster or keep going or whatever and it s just a question of getting your mind to go along with that There are strong signals to overcome there the body doesn t want to go that fast for that long What s been weird for me is having the opposite experience I want to go faster but my body
