  • Minister Hunt, we call on you to save Bimblebox from coal mining « Bimblebox Nature Refuge
this week to let him know that there is a big number of Australians out there who don t want to see this mine go ahead Phone 02 6277 2276 or 03 5979 3188 Email Tell Minister Hunt Save Bimblebox from coal mining Here are some key points you might like to mention Bimblebox is an important private protected area in Queensland s Desert Uplands that was saved from tree clearing by concerned families It forms part of Australia s National Reserve System and is covered by a perpetual conservation covenant It is a valuable conservation area that should not be mined The destruction of Bimblebox by mining would represent the most significant impact experienced to date on a nature refuge A dangerous precedent that should not be set Waratah Coal has proposed offsetting Bimblebox However these offset areas are areas of bushland that already exist so it would only result in a net loss of biodiversity in Queensland Waratah Coal wants to mine and export 40 million tonnes of coal every year from this proposed mine That equates to around 95 million tonnes of CO2 about the annual total from the nation of Greece This coal should be kept in the ground in the interests of a safe climate If the mine goes ahead it would have a significant impact on groundwater a vital resource in the region and for the local grazing industry Australia cannot afford to sacrifice its precious groundwater The Galilee Coal Project is only one of up to ten proposed in the Galilee Basin The cumulative impacts on land water communities and the global climate are enormous These cumulative costs need to be accounted for before any more mines are approved When you re finished please share these images on facebook and twitter so we

  • Bimblebox’s future in the hands of Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt « Bimblebox Nature Refuge
purchase Yes taxpayers our money Since then the land has been nurtured and protected These people spend their time and resources restoring it They just love it because it is conservation heartland and full of birds including the tiny Poephila cincta cincta the black throated finch An extraordinary sighting of these 15g stocky birds was confirmed by its Atlas of Birds Project The bird is listed as endangered by the Commonwealth This area is the Bimblebox Refuge an 8000ha patch of drylands ecosystem that is brimming with biodiversity bimblebox org near Alpha in central Queensland Then suddenly all that changed The refuge is in the way of where Clive Palmer s Waratah Coal s China First thermal coal mine project is proposed for the Galilee Basin Palmer is planning four underground mines and two surface mines covering almost 70 000ha exporting 40 million tonnes a year for 30 years It is quite simply staggering in size All you greenies out there might as well forget about sticking up solar panels to try to reverse global warming and reduce carbon in your own backyard because when this baby gets going we will literally be rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic When the mine was first mooted the little people who donated Bimblebox land thought Surely not this won t go ahead because we ve made an agreement with the government and due process will be followed We re not living in Joh s Queensland anymore Now this is where is all turns very interesting You see Queensland s Newman Government has approved the massive China First Project The issue of destroying the refuge didn t really pose much of hitch A minor technicality people Early in August it was announced in a press release that the Co ordinator General Barry Broe had approved it Broe who Premier Campbell Newman brought across from Brisbane City Council where he was divisional manager of infrastructure has been busy this year approving many things particularly anything huge He s proven very handy at it We ve got Clive s mega mine and the mega rail line and the 15 billion liquefied natural gas plant in central Queensland just to name a few In the case of Bimblebox the landholders who signed the agreement in good faith were not informed of the decision by the State Government They found out through the media Here s where it gets more interesting The proposed mega project still has to receive an assessment from the Federal Government It is before Environment Minister Greg Hunt Is this the same Greg Hunt who when commenting on climate change and bushfire intensity recently said he had looked up what Wikipedia said about it Yes that s right This Environment Minister with all the research power of his vast department turned to Wikipedia which teachers across Australia discourage our schoolchildren from using as a primary source for assignments on the basis it is not always reliable Hunt has to assess a federal environmental

  • Queensland Government approves the mine over Bimblebox « Bimblebox Nature Refuge
is indicative of the contempt that has been shown to landholders throughout this process China First is not the only project proposed for the region the multiple mega coal mines proposed for the Galilee Basin warrant a full independent assessment of the cumulative impacts There will not only be significant repercussions for biodiversity but for our vital groundwater resources There are now calls for a public inquiry into these multiple mega developments that will threaten the future of our region as well as jeopardise the health of the Great Barrier Reef and the global climate At the moment these mines are being approved one by one without any due regard for the cumulative impact The GVK Hancock Alpha Coal Project was the first and so far the only one in the Galilee Basin to receive approval from State and Federal governments Some landholders in the region including Paola are now in the Land Court trying to ensure there is some independent scrutiny applied to this project especially in relation to the groundwater as we are bore dependent We think the Coordinator General should respect the Land Court s time frame and allow for the findings of the hydrological impacts to be heard before he throws out approvals like confetti What s the rush What s wrong with adequately understanding the likely and potential impacts in the bioregion We may finish up with a mess no amount of tax payer s money can fix The Coordinator General again confirmed in his report on China First that more than half of Bimblebox would be cleared to make room for this mine and the remainder would likely to be subject to subsidence from underground mining So if this mine goes ahead we can say goodbye to the high conservation values of Bimblebox That
