    from Hungary in November 2005 After a visit to the Eastern region we returned to Yaoundé and headed to the West Douala and on to Limbe We met Benji Benjamin Jayin Jomi at the reception of the Limbe Botanic Garden We wanted to visit Mt Etinde Mt Cameroon the Korup forest and Mt Kupe and Benji gave us a rough calculation of all expenses transport accommodation porters entrance fees as one package The prices were reasonable so we agreed and spent the next two weeks together with Benji in a very rich programme The next morning we started off for Mt Etinde and climbed it in one day Then we spent four days on Mt Cameroon taking the standard route from Buea to the summit and descend to Bokwango After some rest at Limbe we went to the Korup and spend three days there then after a one night stop in Kumba Barombi Mbo crater lake we finally made a trip to Mt Kupe two nights and back to Limbe We saw countless species of birds including Turacos flowers animals like monkeys chameleon etc Benji had arranged for everything we needed for the trip a Toyota van so that each of us had a seat accommodation in hotels and lodges tents for Mt Cameroon food porters guides everything Benji has good local knowledge for Mt Etinde and Mt Cameroon He knows many birds and plants He was supportive for whatever we came up with For example he helped us save a young crocodile we bought on the road from a poacher the riverside villagers did not like the idea but Benji helped us smuggling the crocodile back into the river Benji has a very good personality calm reliable decisive friendly and caring but not pushy all of these with a

    classifications Rocks area Harrah and steppe The area is very important for migration of birds because the Aqaba Golf in Jordan is the border You may see Syrian Woodpecker Syrian Serin Rock Sparrow and more In Yarmouk valley you will find Pin tailed Sandgrouse Cream colored Courser etc In desert area we have many species of Shrikes and Doves In olive tree and fruit farms you will see Gold Finch and Chukar We also many species of Owls Barn Little Eagle etc in old buildings crag valley I have been doing survey of breeding birds in the last 3 years A Abdulla Palmyra Al Badia desert Anytime Arabic English Palmyra Eco Guiding PEG Cooperative The Palmyra Eco Guiding Cooperative PEG is a small locally based cooperative of four motivated and well trained Palmyreans Ahmed Khaled Abdullah Mahmud Abdullah Adeeb Al Assaed Ghazy Al Qaim recently established with the aim of ensuring an income to locals from biodiversity conservation They have been trained in fauna field identification and eco guiding by an international conservation biologist Gianluca Serra for about 4 years in the framework of a UN FAO Italian Cooperation project GCP SYR 009 ITA During this project the team participated in a major fauna surveying programme aimed at preparing a comprehensive database and high quality photographic archive of the Palmyrean desert The survey culminated in the discovery in April 2002 that at least one colony of Northern Bald Ibis Geronticus eremita persists in the Middle East Serra 2003 Serra et al 2003a The team of eco guides then became heavily involved in the successful protection program of the ibis colony during three subsequent breeding seasons 2002 2004 the program focused on halting foreign poachers raising the awareness of the nomad Bedouins and collecting basic ecological data on the birds The team has become highly self motivated ecologically committed skilled in bird field identification and fluent in English During the past 3 years they have experienced in the field what guiding foreign visitors means as they were put in contact with several European birdwatchers and eco tourists whose comments about the guides were positive and enthusiastic In January February 2004 the 4 members of the team participated in a major ornithological expedition in Syria promoted and supported by the Ornithological Society for the Middle East OSME Wetlands International and BirdLife International birdwatchers of 6 different nationalities were involved Murdoch et al 2004 they will soon receive certificates from OSME acknowledging their participation in the expedition and their successful learning During this expedition they got to know the most faunally interesting areas in Syria so their wildlife knowledge and experience now extends throughout Syria The most tangible and outstanding result of the involvement of these locals in the project s conservation activities is the raising of ecological awareness amongst the local population Serra et al 2003b One of them only three years ago well renowned in the village for his hunting skills and passion is now wholeheartedly engaged in halting hunting not
