  • BCF intro — Welcome to buildingSMART-Tech.org
endusers who wanted to exchange issues proposals and change requests in BIM data models always had to exchange the whole BIM model as a bulk data The receiver had to compare different releases of the BIM model in order to filter the requests from the sender As a much more efficient way to support this effort the idea of developing an open standard to enable BIM workflow communication between different software tools had been proposed to buildingSMART In 2010 Tekla and Solibri came up with an initial XML schema called bcfXML v1 to encode messages containing BIM topics e g issues proposals change requests addressed in BIM data models The implication was to boost the degree of collaboration in BIM workflows by only exchanging the lean topics and not the entire bulk BIM data model between software applications bcfXML v1 became implemented by several software packages and valuable experiences could be gained by using it in BIM based projects In 2013 based on these experiences a task force lead by Solibri was established in buildingSMART s ISG Implementer Support Group to enhance bcfXML v1 in certain focal points like flexibility related to project specific aspects the possibility to exchange maschine readable BCF Topics with attached BIM Snippets small components of a BIM model attached multiple viewpoints Finally and after intense public review bcfXML v2 became released and was adopted by buildingSMART in October 2014 In 2014 as a second major objective of the BCF task force the BCF webservice bcfAPI v1 was introduced by iabi Institute of applied Building Informatics The idea behind this is to exchange BCF Topics not only manually or by e mail attachments via bcfXML files but seamlessly and automated via a standardized RESTful API bcfAPI v1 is currently in the status of a Release Candidate

The simplification may include a a legal subset only then any file created using the simplified schema is automatically valid the full IFC schema or b a structurally optimized schema where a transformation is required to validate against the full IFC schema As a single simplified schema is specific to a model view definition satisfying one or several exchange requirements those requirements need to be documented as an Integrated Delivery Manual IDM and published as an official bSI MVD Simplified schema means a specified methodology that generates simple schemas that remain IFC compatible IFC and full ifcXML are buildingSMART International standards and proposed ISO standards Simplified schemas are published as buildingSMART International specifications together with the bSI official IDM and MVD Affiliated schemas Well formed and valid schemas that could be used to exchange relevant BIM data between two and more parties These schemas shall be based on a defined use case and documented as an IDM In addition to the schema a transformation to the appropriate subset of the IFC or ifcXML schema using XSLT or similar formal specification formats have been published This guarantees a compatibility with the open international standard for Building Information Models Such an interoperable schema is acknowledged by bSI as an affiliated schema Candidate schemas Well formed and valid schemas that could be used to exchange relevant BIM data between two and more parties that have not been supported with an IDM use case specification They may lack any mapping to IFC However a two year period is given to allow liaison with buildingSMART groups and to create documentation of the schema at least as an IDM and to provide a transformation to the buildingSMART IFC standard Such an interoperable schema will be referred to as a candidate for affiliation Naming buildingSMART status Requirement

procedure that had been used 2001 2010 The buildingSMART IFC Software Certification procedure is intended to promote consistent and reliable implementations of the IFC specification by many software vendors across multiple software applications The consistency aimed at by the certification program will help drive rapid evaluation deployment and acceptance of the IFC standard for the exchange and sharing of Building Information Models The IFC Software Certification procedure has been updated during 2009 and 2010 leading to the new IFC Certification 2 0 procedure The previous certification following the IFC2x certification procedure is no longer executed and the validity of the old certification logos will be withdrawn IFC Certification 2 0 procedure current as of 2010 IFC2x Certification procedure previous until 2009 Each individual certification process is guided by the applicable certification procedure and applies to a particular subset of the IFC data schema Also the applicable costs are governed by the size of the schema subset selected The subset is determined by the release of the IFC data schema the model view definition i e the subset of the IFC data schema that corresponds to the exchange requirements selected for the certification The model view definition needs to be accepted
