  • Obama Announnces Initiatives to Ease Student Loan Debt | CALPIRG Students
This benefit would be available for those who have borrowed a federal student loan since 2008 and have another loan starting in 2012 With millions of student borrowers saddled with unmanageable levels of debt these valuable benefits cannot start a moment too soon said Williams Second Obama will announce a loan consolidation initiative to make it easier for borrowers with multiple loans to pay their bills and avoid default The benefit will apply to student borrowers with both a loan from the Department of Education and a loan through the discontinued Federal Family Education Loan program a group of borrowers who are more likely to default Many students are overwhelmed with one foot in two lending systems paying multiple lenders each month and looking on helplessly as their loan changes hands multiple times said Williams Allowing these borrowers to consolidate multiple loans into one payment clarifies confusion and cuts red tape for borrowers Third the Administration will announce a new initiative to improve financial literacy tools for students before they enter college The Department of Education will partner with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to tailor a model financial aid form that will allow students to better understand college costs including loan debt and repayment Currently almost every school has a different financial aid form which makes it difficult for a student to figure out their financial aid award including their loan package A model financial aid form enables students and their families to better understand the true cost of college attendance school by school as well as helps make an apples to apples comparison of those costs Affordable Higher Education Higher Ed CALPIRG at UC Berkeley CALPIRG at UC Davis CALPIRG at UC Irvine CALPIRG at UC Riverside CALPIRG at UC San Diego CALPIRG at UC Santa Barbara CALPIRG

  • CALPIRG Students Rally for High Speed Rail | CALPIRG Students
Hope for Near Term Federal Support California High Speed Rail Struggles and Congress Is Broken and CHSR Pays the Price But yesterday at Union Station on the same day that U S Senator Barbara Boxer announced a mark up of legislation to renew the federal transportation funding package a group of CALPIRG s students rallied to remind voters and the Senator that High Speed Rail is a winning proposition for California regardless of what s going on with the politicians and appointed members of the state CAHSR Board As students we know that our broken outdated and oil dependent transportation system needs to change said Josh Joiner CALPIRG Students Campaign Leader With California s population expected to hit 50 million by 2035 we can t afford to just keep building more congested highways and airport runways that will cost us more money and keep us stuck in traffic stuck on security lines at the airport and ever more dependent on oil Our transportation system alone consumes more oil than any country in the world besides China Last week the Senate voted against President Obama s Jobs Bill which contained 4 billion in funding for increased U S high speed rail capacity Part of today s rally was to push for his provision s inclusion in follow up legislation to be considered by Congress in the coming weeks Students members of CALPIRG also asked passerbyers to snap a picture of themself holding an I love trains sign to Senators Boxer and Feinstein to show their support for High Speed Rail The good news is that both Senators have expressed support for High Speed Rail and other forms of rail travel in the past with Boxer releasing a press release every time USDOT gives more funds to the California project About Us

  • Coming soon to your Bank of America Account - $5/month debit card fees | CALPIRG Students
either a mortgage at the bank or a lot of money 20 000 in the bank Here s how the rest of us without jets can avoid it Consumers can switch to small banks or credit unions which are not expected to copycat this fee PIRG s Bank Fee Tips To date big banks haven t had to worry about people voting with their feet but maybe this is a fee too far or a fee too high and they will start worrying Recall that earlier this year Chase tested a 5 ATM surcharge in Illinois then dropped it Use simple workarounds use a credit card at the store it s also safer by law or use the debit card at an ATM to get cash ATM transactions do not invoke the fee and then use cash at the store People did that for years until debit cards Some people still do The Durbin swipe fee amendment is good for consumers Merchants will pass along their savings because retail is competitive if they don t pass savings along they will lose business The amendment will also encourage the growth of less risky PIN based instead of fraud prone signature debit card networks such as Visa MC networks Here s Senator Durbin s statement on this new fee More from Candace Choi of the AP via USA Today More from Scott Reckard of the LA Times scroll down and check out the comments from consumers My favorite comment is credit unions for the win Consumer Protection Add new comment About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Frequently Asked Questions Campus Chapters UC Berkeley UC Davis UC Irvine UC Riverside UC San Diego UC Santa Barbara UC Santa Cruz UCLA USC Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a
