    carbon footprint but the data you provide will be used alongside the UK carbon data to provide an indicative footprint This footprint can help your school to gain an understanding of the amount of CO2 it releases in a year But as it is based on UK assumptions this information should be treated with care and as a guidance only There are three easy stages to obtaining your Carbon footprint The information you provide at each stage will help the tool to refine your footprint and give you more accuracy Your first step is to register with this website answer some simple questions and get your first footprint No need to do any research or obtain any information as all the questions should be easily answered by anyone in the school To complete stages 2 and 3 you may need to snoop around the school and ask for information from your head teacher or facilities manager Once you have completed stage 2 of your calculator you will have access to action planning tools that will help your school to understand what can be done to reduce your schools CO 2 emissions This action planning tool once available can also be

    able to access our action planning tool The tool once it is available to the school can be used in two ways It can be used to develop manage and record activities on a personal school action plan with a series of actions in the school and to record your progress in reducing CO2 emissions It can be used in safe mode by classes of pupils who can develop action plans investigate different options and provide a tool to initiate group discussion and personal research Your personal school action plan can be continually updated and tweaked as your school progresses You can even make up some very specific actions of your own to be included in the plan Keeping this up to date by returning to the plan and marking off those actions that have been completed over time will allow your Carbon footprint to reduce The more active you are the smaller the footprint becomes In safe mode the class can start with your schools action plan and run through what if scenarios to gain an understanding of the savings available from different actions Pupils will not be able to save the alternative action plans they develop which ensures

    have any difficulty completing any of the mandatory or non mandatory fields please simply have a best guess and proceed through You can always come back and change it at a later date once you have been able to confirm the information If you believe that your school has already been registered but you are unsure who by please contact the Carbon Detectives team via the Contact us tab ensuring that you include your schools name full address and Local Authority as well as who you would like the contact to be and their e mail address If you are planning to enter the competition with both of the eligible year groups you will have to complete the registration process twice one for each group When doing this please ensure that you clearly identify the year group by 1 entering it in the school name field for e g Holts Hill Primary and Holst Hill Secondary during registration and 2 by ensuring that the correct age group is selected via the pupil age drop down at registration stage 3 All of the other information that you enter can stay the same i e address contact floor area etc If you are a middle school we would advise that you register in as a secondary school However it makes little difference either way Login Logging in couldn t be simpler You can login one of two ways either enter the e mail address and password that you set when you registered in the bottom left hand login box found on the My Country page and select go or go to the blue bar found at the top of the page and select login If you have forgotton your password don t worry You can select the send reminder icon found at

    pupils can deposit leaves which are later used as compost New bicycle racks have been installed next to the school building to promote cycling and pupils are taught about road safety Energy display board School vegetable garden Leaf picking Prize awarded An energy audit of the school by 3 rd place Montem Primary School Switch Off campaign and an Eco spying week were carried at the school to encourage pupils to reduce energy consumption Energy use has gone down even though there are now almost 100 more children and 2 new classrooms Any waste products from the vegetable garden are used in composting and wormeries Pupils are taught about ethical farming and lifecycles through demonstrations of live chick hatching Energy campaigns Vegetable patch Chick hatching Prize awarded Bespoke litter picking and teaching packs KS3 Competition Winners 1 st place Oakwood Park Grammar School Actions were taken by the school to reduce energy consumption such as installing automatic computer switch off software which automatically switches off the computers when not in use automatic light senosrs and running a switch off campaign to raise awareness The school has a gardening club managed by students The produc is sold to a local resturant served up in the school canteen or given to the staff The school also completed a very comprehensive travel survey in 2009 2010 which won a Kent County Council silver award Light Sensors Gardening Club Switch it off Prize awarded 3000 of planting and landscaping equipment donated by 2 nd place Lagan College Stickers have been placed on light switches and computers to remind occupants to turn them off when not in use The Eco Committee runs a Slow Food Group who use the school greenhouse to gorw food and raise awareness of using local food amongst the school community

    CO 2 emissions Prizes were awarded in two age categories lower 8 11 year olds and older 11 14 year olds The winner of the older age category was also entered into the International Carbon Detectives competition Six schools from Austria Bulgaria Hungary Lithuania Romania and the UK were invited to participate in the international competition held in Litoměřice in the Czech Republic from the 18th 21st July 2011 Litoměřice Czech Republic Building solar ovens Making paper boats Each school sent five participants either three pupils and two teachers or four pupils and one teacher To participate in the international competition the pupils and teachers from each country were required to produce an A1 sized poster and presentation describing their Carbon Detectives projects as detailed in their national competition entry The first place prize was jointly awarded to Hauptschule Munderfing from Austria and Pal anca Secondary School from Romanian for which they each received 600 Each of the remaining schools were awarded a prize of 200 in recognition of their hard work and to help continue their efforts in reducing CO 2 emissions in their schools The International Competition participants To find out more about what our International Competitors did
