    led an institution through turbulent times increased an institution s stature in its community and it s educational service to the community and be innovative and encouraged in institution s personnel to be innovative and take risks Dr Ray was nominated by J Michael Goodwin the President CEO of the OSU Foundation Impressive letters for support for the nomination also came from the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees the OSU Faculty Senate the OSU Alumni Association OSU University Relations and Marketing and the Intel Corporation The CASE District VIII Recognition Program celebrates exemplary achievement in the field of advancement by member institutions said Cheryl Nations chair of the CASE VIII Board of Directors On behalf of the board I congratulate Dr Ray for his outstanding leadership and his commitment to higher education He exemplifies the standards by which we compare our work and educate and inspire ourselves to greater success Ray who became president of Oregon State University in 2003 has led OSU through the creation of a strategic plan re organization of the academic colleges and the launching of the university s first comprehensive fundraising campaign To date donors have committed more than 868 million more than has been raised in any fundraising campaign in the state s history Under his leadership OSU has seen record enrollment substantial increases in annual research awards which totaled 262 million in 2011 and unprecedented growth in tenure track faculty with more than 100 faculty hires in the last two years Dr Ray embodies a rare combination of traits possessing the acuity and practicality grounded in his background in economics paired with a tremendous heart for the OSU family for education and for Oregon said J Michael Goodwin President CEO of the OSU Foundation In addition to his institutional leadership Ray is a

    Celebration Luncheon In his endorsement of President Cullinan for the award Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski wrote Southern Oregon University has been transformed under Dr Cullinan s leadership When she arrived the institution was struggling with declining enrollment and budget challenges Dr Cullinan was willing to make hard choices to re structure the university maintaining the respect and participation of the faculty and staff More recently she has created a forward thinking strategic plan to guide the University s future Today SOU is positioned as the public liberal arts university of the West providing exceptional undergraduate and graduate education that is affordable and accessible But perhaps her greatest achievement to date writes Oregon University System Chancellor George Pernsteiner has been her relentless pursuit of a strategy that would reverse a decade long decline in enrollment She was steadfast in her efforts and unshakeable in her belief that Southern Oregon University would offer a pre eminent education for undergraduate students says Pernsteiner The president s prudent financial management coupled with this year s strong enrollment signal that the university should be able to weather even the extraordinarily severe reductions in state support forecast for next year In November SOU announced record enrollment numbers including a 26 percent overall increase over the previous year a 46 percent increase in Hispanic students and record student retention numbers Awarding the CASE District VIII Leader of the Year in our district is always difficult but this year was especially challenging says Ray Au of the University of Alberta and the district s current chair The pool of candidates received was among the largest and strongest we ve had in years The selection of President Cullinan for this award speaks to the caliber of work she is doing at Southern Oregon University and for the community it

    The award was presented at the conference s awards Gala by the chair of the CASE International Board of Trustee Cassie McVeety There could be no more deserving recipient of a regional CASE leadership award than he said Oregon Gov Ted Kulongoski Dr Pulliams has a vision of access to higher education for anyone who wants in His passion for this philosophy is one of the reasons I named him to the Oregon Board of Higher Education where he has proven his leadership time and time again While accepting his award Dr Pulliams shared that as a young man he expected to join his father as a foundry worker But instead he became the first in his family to attend college thanks to a scholarship from his local Rotary Club That first gift of opportunity to go to his local community college inspired Pulliams to make access to higher education the cornerstone of his vision at PCC Since joining PCC in 2004 among Dr Pulliams many notable accomplishments was the passing of a 374 million capital bond measure the largest educational bond measure in the history of Oregon to expand their facilities to serve 20 000 additional full time students

    all Yet with the heart of a champion she perseveres and moves on to embrace her next challenge This is how Cheryl Nations is described by one of her peers Cheryl is the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Service Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education CASE District VIII Board For 15 years Cheryl served the University of Washington most recently as Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications When not at the University of Washington Cheryl is best recognized within the post secondary advancement community because of her leadership as Chair of CASE District VIII until 2014 serving 138 member institutions in western Canada and the Pacific Northwest When I learned that Cheryl would be receiving the 2016 Distinguished Service Award I knew it was the right decision said Mike Goodwin president and CEO of the Oregon State University Foundation current chair of the CASE board and past chair of CASE VIII Her volunteer service over these past decades has been exceptional and she has gone above and beyond to contribute her talents to the district and to the organization s international aspirations The Cheryl s impact on the profession of advancement is summed up by her colleague and 2015 Distinguished Service Award recipient Greg Sheridan When I think of Cheryl I am reminded of the joint love she and her husband Keith share with thoroughbred racehorses Cheryl has that same majestic beauty inside her soul and as a person She has a presence when she is in a group because of her welcoming personality She has a level of compassion and understanding that ensures the inclusiveness of others I am honored to have her as a friend and colleague Distinguished Service Award is given to a CASE VIII member for outstanding service to the district
