    University advancement professionals from around the District recognized Ric Thomas vice president for development at The University of Montana Foundation with the CASE VIII Distinguished Service Award at the annual district conference in Vancouver British Columbia on Feb 24 This CASE award is given annually to a leader for outstanding service to the District Service comes in many ways and this award honors Ric s selfless dedication to serve the best interest of education and our advancement profession said Brad Hestbak past chair of CASE VIII and Senior Director of External Relations at Northern Lakes College in Alberta who presented Thomas with the award Thomas has worked in higher education development since 1991 starting his career at his alma mater Washington State University Before coming to the UM Foundation in 2005 Thomas also held positions at Eastern Washington University and the University of Idaho Thomas led the UM Foundation fundraising team the final two years of the Invest In Discovery campaign the two best fundraising years in the 59 year history of the UM Foundation Thomas has been an active volunteer with CASE He served on the CASE District VIII Board of Directors for ten years and chaired the board

    Squire At February s annual district conference the 2010 Distinguished Service Award was presented to both Mark Kemball of Oregon Health Science University and Pat Squire of Portland State University Annually this award is given to honor District VIII members that have demonstrated notable service to not only the institutional advancement profession but also to the district itself Both Kemball and Squire have been long time volunteers and supporters of CASE through work at both the district and national level Kemball was Chair of the district board from 2001 2003 and also served on the CASE National Commission on Communications Marketing between 2006 2009 Squire served on the CASE National Commission on Alumni Relations between 2001 2003 and was then Chair of the district board from 2003 2005 Each also served a multitude of roles in numerous annual district conferences from program planning to presenting The CASE District VIII Board is very pleased to be able to recognize the amazing work of Mark and Pat said Cheryl Nations chair elect of the district and also head of the Awards Committee Between them they occupied the three senior District Boards positions for a decade providing valuable continuity and consistency of leadership

    2006 At the college she supporting efforts for all of their boards Alumni Association Annual Giving and Foundation One sample accomplishment she initiation their e Philanthropy program that within a few months increased their electronic giving to their Foundation by over 100 percent Lana Brown Whitman College After 20 years as a journalist Lana bravely moved into the world of higher education including as editor of the Whitman Magazine Her colleagues have applauded her sense of collaboration which they have shared has been an essential element to her success in transforming their magazine into a vehicle that greatly supports the needs and goals of their president and the advancement office 2013 District VIII Rising Star Awards This year the Board is proud to recognize two individuals Chrissy Shelton from Washington State University WSU and Kurt Heimbigner from Gonzaga University Chrissy Shelton Washington State University Chrissy Shelton joined WSU in 2008 in a new position called the Culture of Philanthrophy Tasked with building a culture of philantrophy among the faculty staff and students Chrissy built an entire engagement strategy from the ground up called Cougar Colleagues The program led to a comprehensive branding and engagement strategy for the WSU campus communities and an increase in giving during one of the most challenging budget crisis in the University s history Additionally Chrissy built the Recent Graduate program at WSU the first of its kind for the school Chrissy is currently a major gifts officer in the College of Education at WSU Kurt Heimbigner Kurt Heimbigner is the director of marketing services for the Gonzaga University Marketing and Communications Department Kurt has only been in the position for three years but as Joe Pross Acting Vice President University Relations Gonzaga University comments Kurt very quickly emerged as a leader not only in Marketing

    led an institution through turbulent times increased an institution s stature in its community and it s educational service to the community and be innovative and encouraged in institution s personnel to be innovative and take risks Dr Ray was nominated by J Michael Goodwin the President CEO of the OSU Foundation Impressive letters for support for the nomination also came from the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees the OSU Faculty Senate the OSU Alumni Association OSU University Relations and Marketing and the Intel Corporation The CASE District VIII Recognition Program celebrates exemplary achievement in the field of advancement by member institutions said Cheryl Nations chair of the CASE VIII Board of Directors On behalf of the board I congratulate Dr Ray for his outstanding leadership and his commitment to higher education He exemplifies the standards by which we compare our work and educate and inspire ourselves to greater success Ray who became president of Oregon State University in 2003 has led OSU through the creation of a strategic plan re organization of the academic colleges and the launching of the university s first comprehensive fundraising campaign To date donors have committed more than 868 million more than has been raised in any fundraising campaign in the state s history Under his leadership OSU has seen record enrollment substantial increases in annual research awards which totaled 262 million in 2011 and unprecedented growth in tenure track faculty with more than 100 faculty hires in the last two years Dr Ray embodies a rare combination of traits possessing the acuity and practicality grounded in his background in economics paired with a tremendous heart for the OSU family for education and for Oregon said J Michael Goodwin President CEO of the OSU Foundation In addition to his institutional leadership Ray is a
