  • The Right Fit and The Misfit | CASE District V - Council for Advancement and Support of Education District V
organization has two sets of expectations and there are four kinds of employees that meet the expectations in one way or another There are quantifiable matrices of performance and there are the organizational values Welch postulates that the easiest to deal with are on the ends For those that have great performance and exemplify the organization value it is incumbent upon management to reward retain and keep happy the top producers For those that don t meet performance standards and are not indicative of the organizational values you just move them out But the two hybrids present management with its greatest challenges One of the challenges is embodied in the employees that are fabulous representatives of the organizational values but not productive based on performance matrices These employees tend to be popular and mean a lot to other members of the organization even if those around them recognize a weakness in their ability to satisfy performance standards Welch goes on to suggest that these are people worth working with because they re the right kind of people to have in the organization These are the staffers we want to be successful We work hard to coach them to help them understand what the matrices are and why they are important We invest our organization and ourselves in their success because they re the right kind of people Where Welch s blog left me flat and where I think CASE V can tackle a tough topic is what to do with the employee who is successful based on the performance matrices but clearly a poor fit with the organizational values This is the employee who undermines the comfort and stability of the rest of the staff They cause the staff to question both the organizational values and the ability of management
