of Stories Walker talks about the Significance of Stories Posted March 14 2013 by CASE V Author and Journalist Rob Walker s success selling insignificant doodads on eBay is a lesson for the marketing world During Walker s keynote presentation at the CASE V and VI Better Together Conference Dec 9 11 2012 he explained the project that led him to believe it s not the value of the thing that is so important it is the story behind the thing Walker co founded the project Significant Objects where he and his partner bought 100 thrift store and garage sale items valued at 125 and asked great writers such as Nicholson Baker and Jonathan Lethem to make up fictitious stories about them Stories ranged from sweet to scary to satirical but a common thread was elements of imagination and surprise When the junk along with the associated back stories were sold on eBay for a total of 8 000 it demonstrated that good stories are a powerful driver of value Now the each objects value was not only subjective it could be measured objectively The key said Walker was having good stories Everyone here has had the experience of tell ing or hearing a good story explained Walker We all know what good stories are on some instinctual level To demonstrate his point he compared the bad story to the bad date where the person talks about him or herself incessantly and focuses narrowly on all of his or her good qualities The result is boredom The story does not stick A good story by contrast uses imagination to tell the story in a way that is repeatable and relatable he said His successful storytelling project has drawn attention from the marketing and branding worlds because of its success selling
