  • CASE DISTRICT VII Peter Smits, 2015 Tribute Award Winner
    move an institution to its next level of achievement and beyond He builds greatness and compels the expectation that such is possible Under Smits s leadership Fresno State recently completed its first comprehensive campaign and surpassed its 200 million campaign goal by 7 percent William Covino now president of CSU Los Angeles was Fresno State s provost at the time Attributing much of the campaign s success to Smits Covino says He built and sustained a fundraising team of exceptional collaborative strength He also built a development and fundraising infrastructure including university communications and alumni relations that has been regarded as a benchmark for success Smits is a senior fellow of CASE and a former member of the CASE District VII Board of Directors the District VII Executive Committee and the CASE Commission on Philanthropy He is past president of the Central California Chapter s Association of Fundraising Professionals AFP and was named the chapter s Fundraising Executive of the Year Smits has presented at workshops seminars and conferences for CASE AFP and the Association of Governing Boards He also frequently serves as a workshop or retreat facilitator for foundation and alumni boards Writes Zingg His service to the advancement profession and the manner of his engagements and leadership have placed him in that rare category where he not only has made a difference to his own institution but also led by the force of personal example far beyond Susan Anderson Chico State assistant vice president of alumni and parent relations adds Smits is gracious with his time and energy is always willing to lend advice and his breadth and depth of advancement knowledge and expertise has helped numerous institutions achieve significant accomplishments Prior to his appointment at Fresno State Smits was vice president for advancement at Indiana University of

    director he built and led a group that increased alumni participation by 30 to 50 percent in various California regions Buzbee is passionate about challenging the status quo and fostering a culture of innovation And writes nominator Armin Afsahi UCSD associate vice chancellor and chief alumni officer Brandon s poise creativity and passion have enabled the meteoric growth of our creative engagement programs Among other accomplishments Buzbee has led efforts to conduct more than 5 000 face to face qualification visits with alumni throughout the country and he has helped move UCSD s alumni association from a dues paying model toward a giving societies model Additionally he has been a key contributor to USCD s Career Services and Alumni Relations Departments a move that has increased alumni engagement After being promoted to his current position Buzbee was tasked with creating a new industry engagement team at UCSD and adds Afsahi in just one year has forged the deepest and most meaningful relationships with industry partners and employing organizations Buzbee received the 2015 Council of Alumni Association Executives Forman Fellowship and he is focusing his research on ways to foster the professional success and mobility of students and alumni In his
