    artists in the 21st century That s a question Matt Braun executive director of the Fleisher Art Memorial asks every day We caught up with Matt Braun last month to talk about the Collaborative s latest pro bono design project with Fleisher a Request for Proposals for a master plan View our video interview below the jump The mission of the Fleisher Art Memorial is to make art accessible to everyone regardless of economic means background or artistic experience To do that Fleisher offers free and affordable art classes to children teens and adults Like many of the artists it serves Fleisher Art Memorial is a study in resourcefulness The community based art center collaborated on a conceptual design for a children s art garden with the Collaborative and made it happen with a 25 000 gift from a board member and lots of sweat equity Then Fleisher participated in our design process to support community led efforts to improve adjacent Palumbo Park The Collaborative worked with Fleisher s leadership to create an RFP with clear well organized overview of the facility and the organization s strategic goals which set the stage for solid proposals and community engagement We re

    s Compass Connector and Catalyst design charrette 8th and Berks is a key redevelopment site in Eastern North Philadelphia The 1 8 acre site represents one of the last large scale redevelopment opportunities within the neighborhood It also holds the potential to form a vital link between residential Eastern North Philadelphia transit oriented development surrounding Temple Station and the Temple University campus The design charrette engaged the Eastern North Philadelphia community in developing a vision for 8th and Berks Nearly fifty designers community leaders public agencies and students participated generating five redevelopment scenarios Since then charrette partners Asociasion de Puertoriqquenos en Marcha APM LISC Philadelphia and the Office of Housing and Community Development have worked with the Collaborative s volunteer design team to synthesize the five scenarios into a single plan The conceptual master plan for 8th and Berks captures guiding principles articulated through the design charrette Here are the highlights from the plan Development that shifts in density from east to west to make a transition between rowhouse blocks and transit oriented development Multi generational living development that offers housing options for people of all ages Sustainable design elements Open space that doubles as gathering places and green stormwater

    that will also be future home of the Philadelphia Police Department Now the ideas and relationships resulting from these charrettes are beginning to bear fruit in West Philadelphia Get the flash player here http www adobe com flashplayer Greening Lea The West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools WPCN has received a PECO Green Region matching grant of a 10 000 to green Lea s playground located at 47th and Spruce Streets This grant program administered by the Natural Lands Trust encourages open space preservation improvements to parks and recreation resources and environmental conservation The PECO Green Region matching grant requires a dollar for dollar match and will ultimately leverage 20 000 in investments WPCN used the greening strategy developed during the Transforming Urban Schoolyards design charrette and refined in a follow up report by the Collaborative to apply for the PECO grant Get the flash player here http www adobe com flashplayer 46th Street Station Area The insights ideas and sketches from the Urban Remix design charrette were combined to create a conceptual master plan for the blocks surrounding the 46th Street Station Recommendations and renderings from that plan have been incorporated into the Philadelphia City Planning Commission s new

    of Design on the Delaware 2012 a regional professional development conference for architects landscape architects urban planners and other design professionals Urban Remix focused on the blocks surrounding the recently renovated 46th and Market transit station With improved transit access and substantial real estate ready for something new this area is experiencing a wave of development The future headquarters of the Philadelphia Police Department and the new Children s Hospital of Philadelphia Karabots Center Youth Study Center and West Philadelphia High School will join longstanding community institutions like the Enterprise Center Community College of Philadelphia West Philadelphia Catholic High School and Kirkbride Center This could all add up to a new health and human services district that nourishes both citywide consumers as well as businesses and residents nearby But how can this complicated swath of West Philadelphia cut up by urban renewal era superblocks a few grand 19th century institutions and the elevated Market Frankford Line itself get its groove back Charrette teams were assigned to explore different sections of the district with an additional team charged with enhancing its existing network of open and public spaces This called for an extra dose of collaboration during the day The ideas proposed by the four teams overlapped very well They included options for early actions first phase public private partnerships and projects that could serve as catalysts for longer term partnerships and planning Stay tuned in 2013 for a conceptual master plan that synthesizes the work from the charrette In the meantime here s a sampling of ideas presented at the reveal An under the El art installation to bridge the district north and south of Market Street Generous curbless bump outs ensure a safe accessible crossing This open space network plan that contains many concepts a green promenade created from
