    contents Description Alice Madeleine Laborde was a founding faculty member of the French and Italian studies department at UC Irvine Laborde acted as Associate Professor and specialized in the study of 18th century French literature In 1977 she filed a lawsuit against the University of California alleging that the University s repeated decisions not to promote her to full professor were due to unlawful discrimination against her sex The district court found that Laborde had established a case of prima facie discrimination but that the University s decision not to promote her was due to her inadequate scholarship and not her sex In 1982 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed this judgment This collection contains Laborde s complete file of materials relating to her legal cases against UCI It includes transcripts of legal proceedings for all cases detailed court decisions rendered in favor of UCI correspondence between Laborde and her lawyers her colleagues graduate students and several departments and committees reviews of Laborde s scholarly works analyses of faculty demographics and promotions at UCI details of Therese Ballet Lynn s similar lawsuits against the University article clippings and publications and Laborde s professional files Extent 2 0 linear feet

    working in many areas of education from community organizing to migrant and bilingual education to arts education and from kindergarten to graduate school levels She has expressed it is her responsibility as an artist to be an activist for social justice human rights and environmental health She began working as an artist as a teenager coming of age in the human rights movements that included the United Farm Workers and the protests of the war in Vietnam She works in many forms and traditions Most of her public art works are found in the San Francisco Bay Area but she has also painted murals in other parts of the world Some of her works are individual projects and others are collaborative Juana Alicia is based in Berkeley California She teaches intermittently at several universities in the San Francisco Bay Area including San Francisco State University U C Davis and Stanford University Most recently she was a Fulbright Scholar in Mérida Yucatán Mexico where she taught at the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán Extent 0 01 linear feet 1 CD containing 137 digital images in the JPEG format Restrictions Copyright has not been assigned to the Department of Special Collections

  • Finding Aid to the Alien Enemy Registration Affidavits, 1918
    of registration affidavits collected by each police district arranged by district and then alphabetically by surname Background On November 16 1917 all males in the United States older than 14 who were natives citizens denizens or subjects of the German Empire were required to register as alien enemies In 1918 an act of Congress included women aged 14 and older The U S Attorney General requested that the San Francisco Police Department administer the regulations under the general supervision and direction of the United States Department of Justice Registration affidavits were filed at police district stations Then each district sent its collected registration affidavits along with a summary sheet to the Chief Registrar Each alien enemy was issued a registration card with photograph and identifying information which he was required to have on his person at all times He also needed permission from the local registrar to travel or change place of residence Certain areas were also off limit zones as deemed by the military The Armistice was declared on November 11 1918 and all regulations on enemy aliens were lifted December 25 1918 Extent 9 0 cartons 9 cubic ft Restrictions All requests for permission to publish or quote
