    places as Los Angeles County Orange County the California Missions Riverside County the Mission Inn of Riverside San Diego County Imperial County San Bernardino mining towns and other miscellaneous views and shots of people and places in and around California Background Lillian I Allard was born in 1910 in Pennsylvania She married in October 1929 and subsequently moved with her husband to Southern California where she resided until her death in 1979 They had one child a son named Frank who attended USC in 1956 and received a degree in Mathematics Lillian and her husband were avid collectors and were part of a hobby society Frequently they visited second hand stores Lillian loved California and showed her admiration for the state by collecting picture postcards of the region Extent 1 38 Linear feet 782 postcards 2 boxes Restrictions The collection contains published articles researchers are reminded of the copyright restrictions imposed by publishers on reusing their articles and parts of books It is the responsibility of researchers to acquire permission from publishers when reusing such materials The copyright to unpublished materials belongs to the heirs of the writers Permission to publish quote or reproduce must be secured from the repository

    woman with her family and served as a schoolteacher during the late 1800s until she married James T Allen a professor and moved to Berkeley at the turn of the century Berkeley was where she began her ornithological work through a course in Zoology taught by A J Cook and through field trips throughout California with her husband and with professor Charles R Keyes It was Keyes who introduced her to the Cooper Club now Cooper Ornithological Society and its prestigious members such as Barlow Emerson and Grinnell Allen flourished in the Cooper Club and became a notable female member in 1913 In her own memoir in the collection she writes I believe there were no women or if they did belong to the club they were not supposed to attend the meetings Allen however broke that precedent and was elected Secretary of the Northern Division in 1916 Vice President in 1925 and eventually President in 1926 She was the first woman to hold the office Allen was also an expressive writer detailed note taker and published author Her writings appear in such publications as The Condor and The University of California Chronicle She died in 1945 at her home

    was a professor of zoology at the University of Kansas 1913 and the Southern Branch of the University of California 1922 The collection consists of correspondence manuscripts clippings and photos related to Allen s career as a researcher and professor of Zoology and a manuscript titled The Bennet family Background Allen was born in Green Castle Indiana July 4 1887 attended De Paul University and received his PhD from the University of Chicago 1903 he taught Anatomy and Zoology at the University of Wisconsin became professor of zoology at the University of Kansas 1913 joined the Southern Branch of the University of California 1922 and became a professor and eventually the first chairman in the department of Zoology he was part of a small group initiating research on the emerging field of neuroendocrinology as professor emeritus he pursued research in the UCLA Atomic Energy Project and in 1957 his eightieth birthday he was awarded an honorary LLD by UCLA died in 1963 in Los Angeles Extent 3 boxes 1 5 linear ft 2 oversize boxes Restrictions Property rights to the physical object belong to the UCLA Library Special Collections Literary rights including copyright are retained by the creators and their
