  • Finding Aid to the American Jewish Congress, Northern California Division records, 1957-1988
    and published material and some photographs Background The American Jewish Congress AJC was founded in 1916 and reorganized in 1920 and 1938 The groundwork for the Northern California Division was laid in the 1930s by Rabbis Saul White of Beth Sholom and Elliot Burstein of Beth Israel when they organized a boycott of German goods The Division was officially founded in December 1943 The AJC s mission shifted somewhat over the years but the core was the promotion of Jewish rights and freedom within the U S and the support of the Jewish Homeland The organization s Civil Rights stand broadened over the years from a concern for Jewish Rights American Jewish Yearbook 1922 to the elimination of all forms of racial and religious bigotry American Jewish Yearbook 1995 and was referred to by one member as a Jewish ACLU One of the AJC s primary money making activities was the sponsoring of tours of Israel and Jewish themed tours to other cultural and religious sites around the world Extent Number of containers 10 cartons 1 box Linear feet 10 4 Restrictions All requests to reproduce publish quote from or otherwise use collection materials must be submitted in writing to

    and students as well as scholars conducting research in all fields of Jewish culture and civilization Members of the general public are also invited to use the Library s materials for personal enrichment and enjoyment With approximately 110 000 print volumes the library s collections have grown consistently through endowments gifts of major private collections and an ongoing acquisition program The Burton Sperber Jewish Community Library at American Jewish University now serves as the official Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles This new library succeeds the original Peter M Kahn Jewish Community Library that was formerly housed at the Los Angeles Jewish Federation Dedicated by his family in memory of noted Los Angeles philanthropist and landscape developer Burton Sperber this library welcomes the entire Los Angeles Jewish community to enjoy its state of the art facility including regularly scheduled programs for children and families as well as author and other literary encounters The Lowy Winkler Family Rare Book Center a gift of Peter and Janine Lowy is home to the Maslan Bible Collection This unusual assemblage of exceptional volumes includes approximately 4 000 Bibles some dating back almost to the inception of the printing press This collection also features bible translations representing most of the written languages of the world as well as the Kalman Friedman Collection of Italian Judaica The University Archives of the American Jewish University is a collection of documents pamphlets recordings letters publications photographs scrapbooks and ephemera that document the history of the University of Judaism and the Brandeis Bardin Institute which merged to become American Jewish University in 2007 depicting people places and events at both campuses Extent 1 Folder Box 21 Restrictions Transmission or reproduction of materials protected by copyright beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission of the copyright owners

    Contact California State Library California History Room View entire collection guide PDF 55 29 Kb HTML Search this collection Entire Collection Guide Online Items Collection Overview Table of contents Description The bulk of the collection consists of financial documents primarily payment receipts for the period ca 1887 1911 and scattered later dates The receipts document most aspects of the corporation payroll legal fees purchases of building materials advertising costs etc In addition there are a few personal items pertaining to Wright and his family Background The American Land and Trust Company ca 1914 the Anglo American Land Co was the real estate company established by Charles W Wright to promote land development in the founding days of the city of Larkspur in Marin County In 1886 87 Wright purchased around 600 acres from rancher Patrick King for 21 000 He had the land surveyed and subdivided into lots for sale to the public In 1891 he built the Larkspur Inn and in 1895 the Hotel Larkspur in order to further promote development Larkspur became an incorporated town on March 17 1908 and became a city in 1928 Wright died in 1929 and the family finally sold all interests in Larkspur

    the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement Using payments from the four major American tobacco companies the American Legacy Foundation performs research and conducts targeted marketing campaigns to help Americans quit smoking and prevent youth from beginning to smoke Background The American Legacy Foundation is a non profit national public health foundation focussed on preventing young people from smoking and helping smokers to quit It was created in 1999 as a result of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement MSA negotiated among the attorneys general of 46 states the District of Columbia and five U S territories and the four largest U S tobacco companies Brown Williamson Lorillard Philip Morris Inc and R J Reynolds Inc Legacy launched the truth campaign in 2000 aimed at youth and employing a bold and edgy feel truth sought to educate teens about the tobacco industry s deceptive practices by using their own documents in campaign materials Extent 8 6 Linear Feet 4 cartons 9 boxes 2 oversize folders Restrictions Copyright has not been assigned to the Library Center for Knowledge Management All requests for permission to publish or quote from material must be submitted in writing to the UCSF Archivist Permission for publication is given
