  • Album of carte de visite portraits of 19th-century American political and literary figures, 1860-1869
    E Anthony or E and H T Anthony 501 Broadway New York from photographic negatives by Mathew B Brady s studio Brady s National Portrait Gallery Background Nineteenth century American photographer best known for his portraits and documentation of the American Civil War Mathew Brady came to New York as a young man of sixteen worked as a jewelry case designer and on the side studied photography with various teachers one of whom was the photography pioneer Samuel F B Morse He eventually established studios in New York in 1844 and in Washington D C in 1849 and began earning awards for his daguerreotype portraits and later his ambrotypes and albumen prints His studios did a brisk business in producing carte de visite portraits for soldiers about to go to the front as the Civil War broke out in 1861 Brady set out to document the war and organized a staff of travelling photographers including Alexander and James Gardner T H O Sullivan T C Roche S C Chester and David Knox whom he sent out into the field to record the people places and battles of the war Despite his great achievments and prominent place in the history of photography Brady died alone and impoverished on Jan 15 1896 Extent 1 album 39 photographic prints on carte de visite mounts albumen c 17 x 13 cm album Bound in 19th century bevelled dark brown pebble grain leather covers panelled in blind gilt spine panels and gold stamped spine title Album in gothic letters two large ornamental brass clasps half of the lower clasp missing all edges gilt textured white decorated endpapers Spec Coll copy in beige cloth clamshell box with box label Brady Portrait Album Restrictions Property rights to the physical object belong to the UC Regents Literary rights

  • 1st South Carolina / 33rd U.S. Colored Troops Records, [ca. 1847-1923, 1983] (bulk dates 1850s-1860s)
    first organized in the Department of the South by General David Hunter at Hilton Head South Carolina in May of 1862 This first effort to form a black regiment met with failure initially due to two significant causes first Hunter had not received authorization from the War Department in Washington allowing the formation of Black Units and Second the recruits were involuntarily inducted into the regiment in a manner reminiscent of their days as slaves As a result the Regiment was ordered disbanded Later the First South Carolina was reorganized under General Rufus B Saxon Attempts to recruit troops from Hilton Head s African American population were difficult at first due to the memory of the failed Hunter Experiment These obstacles were overcome and the first company was formed under the command of Captain C T Trowbridge On November 10 1862 Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson assumed command of the 1st S C It was under Higginson s command that the 1st reached full strength and was drilled in fighting order Higginson led the regiment on an expedition up the St Mary s River along the Georgia Florida state line This expedition lasted from 23 January to 1 February 1863 One of the most significant actions the 1st participated in was the occupation of Jacksonville Florida In March of 1863 a squadron of five steamboats made their way up the St Johns River with the 1st S C and 2nd S C Volunteer Infantry on board On March 10 the forces occupied Jacksonville with no resistance On February 8 1864 the regiment was redesignated the 33rd United States Colored Troops Combined with two other regiments one white and one black the 33rd made their first assault on a fortification at Battery Gregg on James Island in Charleston The combined forces began
