Virtual Sales Agent Virtual Sales Rep Virtual Specialist Virtual Support Agent Virtual Teacher Virtual Tutor Web Agent Tweet Comments There are 161 comments Roberto Gilli Mar 28 2011 I saw also Virtual Coach and Virtual Tutor when the ChatBot is used as a Virtual Assistant in a learning environment Richard Wallace Mar 28 2011 How about a poll I would vote for chatbot and or chatterbot Dale Mar 28 2011 Agree with Roberto in eLearning virtual teacher has also been used Disagree with Richard and even idea of of a single term that one or two people or companies will own that Search term Sure those who place highly on chatbot will want to promote that Those who rank well with virtual agent even competing against human services will want to promote that People will promote terminology that s in their own self interest because we re humans not bots Which leads me to suggest that different terms should be applied to different business technology or academic applications Chatbot while classic carries a very heavy negative connotation if used for commercial applications People avoid it like the plague But for academic and amateur use it s perfect Different business verticals will adopt their own naming convention including eLearning which will have a few of it s own Additionally the function of a chatbot differs within the commercial sector many are used to bring up web data not actually respond with conversation some are conversational with Links to data some are purely conversational Those nuances should be differentiated by it s naming convention But as before we will see businesses carve out new names and avoid the old in part to establish themselves and their difference in market and to separate themselves from the amateur hobbyists And to lock in some SEO terms All of us hoping we hit on the Kleenex of the virtual whatever industry Michael de Louwere Mar 28 2011 First what I m missing is the term Brand Character This is basically the personification of the brand This can either be a person a cartoon Popeye Michelin etc or an item Coca Cola bottle for instance Talking about personification Avatar means a personification of a person or a god Vishnu in the original case Since the word avatar is mostly used depicting people who are chatting or taking part on forum discussions I think Avatar is a very strong word for showing the person brand that s behind a functional character on a website The power of these simple pictures should not be underestimated When it s a cheerful picture the person behind it must be nice When it s some kind of monster often used than you can be sure of being perceived that way And with Second Life still fresh in memory people understand very fast what an avatar is You just have to explain that it can be used to enhance the experience brand instead of deteriorate it I like brand agent as a functional brand character as well though Virtual assistent virtual agent are very strong and clear as well That they are used for chat bots as well well that s just something we have to accept for a while In a very few years these things will grow into being the same digital character that will help you around the website and or call center and perhaps even the physical store Most other synonyms in the list are too long or not familiar enough Best Michael Scott Overmyer Mar 28 2011 It seems to me that many of these synonyms imply a good deal of intelligence that most chatbots don t possess For example just because an AIML bot is used in a learning environment doesn t mean that it s a pedagogical agent without significant additional programming I m with Rich Wallace here Michael de Louwere Mar 28 2011 Oh and by the way I m using the term Digital Employee quite often when talking to customers Works very well Glenys McLaughlin Mar 28 2011 First congratulations to the team at chatbots org for pulling this list together Good information for the industry and great topic for discussion I agree with Dale about using different terms for different applications In my experience chatbots is right for some applications but it doesn t tend to work well in the Enterprise space There I ve found that virtual assistant virtual agent or virtual conversational agent are better for positioning and have better acceptance Virtual human and virtual employee are also well accepted Differences in sophistication of the software and whether or not it s been developed into a product are also important bases for applying different terms Regarding avatar interestingly I ve found quite a lot of people who know about chatbots discriminate between the conversational brain and the face This means that they talk about a chatbot having an avatar rather than being an avatar This is very interesting and SL and the movie Avatar may well have something to do with it What it points to is that people are starting to see chatbots as entities in their own right who can have an avatar that represents them Richard Wallace Mar 29 2011 Perhaps the conversation could be refined by thinking harder about what we are talking about An enterprise virtual person might consist of 3 modules 1 Speech Recognition 2 Chatbot 3 Avatar TTS Speech recognition converts an analog voice signal to text The chatbot implements a text to text mapping Taken alone the chatbot can function as AI character in a text only medium like IM email forums or a classic Turing Test The Avatar is takes the text symbols and converts them to voice and animation Michael de Louwere Mar 29 2011 Richard Wallace Speech recognition and chatbot technology is already used in telephony solutions automated call centers and is now called Open Question Speech Recognition Basically it classifies the recognized text If the recognition rate is above 60 then the accuracy of the classification is close to 100 Using an avatar to answer the question is something that would be nice Since the number of possible answers is limited and the length is generally short I would prefer real speech above TTS Better quality limited costs and the avatar could actually pronounce the answers and use corresponding gestures An example not using SR yet can be found here http www youtube com watch v CCuGTFEn r embedded Willem van Doesburg Apr 1 2011 Why not consider approaching IEEE with a proposal to standardize virtual agents or pick your synonym If you combine your effort with e g SIGCHI and the community around the Intelligent Virtual Agent conferences who are also drafting a standard for controlling virtual agents I m sure the IEEE would look favorably in such a proposal Erwin van Lun Apr 1 2011 Tx all for your comments Roberto We ve added Virtual Coach and Virtual Tutor to our list It s actually a role our thing could play We also stumbled upon virtual patient and virtual doctor and we ll probably find a lot more virtual X in the future Richard A poll would be a good idea after all arguments have been discussed everybody feels engaged and committed to change after we ve recommended something based on the poll We ll certainly take this suggestion into account Dale we ll add virtual teacher too Which leads me to suggest that different terms should be applied to different business technology or academic applications I think that s not feasible Suppose Nike would develop 10 different things virtual trainers in their specific sport area These chatbots would know everything about their sport but also about Nike s products you can buy So a virtual sales agent A virtual advisor A virtual trainer A virtual guide I would say it s an agent representing a brand and doing any thing on behalf of the brand For elearning environment If you are in the elearing environment of MIT the virtual characters represent MIT If you are in a neutral environment say a virtual Fire Station with lots of virtual fire men around and one of them is your trainer how to address the others which are there Michael From a etymology point of view avatar is the incarnation of a spirit of a soul if you like the embodiment of AI So we could use body as well I think we need to use a word that combines both avatar as its intelligence We haven t found brand character in our research but we ll investigate this term as well Obviously considering my background in branding I love this term And with Second Life still fresh in memory people understand very fast what an avatar is I don t agree In most case people will not be able to distinguish an avatar representing a real human being from an avatar representing with AI representing a brand an organisation or nothing at all Digital employee we ll add this as well In fact we should double the list by adding digital everywhere The same counts for virtual I have some problems with terms which do not stand on their own but are something borrowed from the real world and an adjective added Scott the problem is that even all synonyms are not well defined In your mind it s quite clear what a chatbot is but in other countries the term is used in a different way And in this case chatbot can be very intelligent without AIML btw Glenys In some markets chatbot works perfectly well in the enterprise space For example in the Netherlands a new book on chatbot in customer service has been published And there are more markets out there with different interpretations of the very same term Well here s our dilemma We can t use levels of sophistication Eventually all developer are working on the very same thing Amateurs as well Their sophication level is limited by the availalable tools When NLP tool will be become available for mid sized markets the number of very intelligent highly sophiscated chatbots will exploded It s just a matter of time but we are preparing our terminology for the future Richard Perhaps the conversation could be refined by thinking harder about what we are talking about An enterprise virtual person might consist of 3 modules 1 Speech Recognition 2 Chatbot 3 Avatar TTS In the future we do not only have speech recognition but also image recognition we ll need to recognize individual human beings based on their body posture and facial charactistics We ll need to recognize non verbals expressions of emotions And we need to memorize it all for the rest of their lifes It will require a huge AI memory I ve been working on a model of 64 elements to categorise all elements of communication between a human and a let s say virtual human http www chatbots org community buzz stop categorisation Willem Standarize through a formal organisation Sounds like a great idea The only thing is it is a technical term or a commercial term The thing is that we are all building cars Some are building luxury cars others four wheel drive pick up vans or trucks When these specific categories are applied in certain markets we like to invent a new word without mentioning the category To make it worse we also have our brand names It s a mess We don t have standardized words for the main category car what s our equivalent subcategories four wheel drive truck Independent of the quality in which subcategory are we delivering applications let s say the roles played in which game are we playing In what situations should we test our car A four wheel in Alaska freezing cold extremely wet like in a rainforest or hot in the middle of the Sahara What are the parameters of the environment and where are we specialized in The discussion helps the industry forward please leave more comments and invite others Based on all the feedback we will create a paper with suggestions that might be adopted by the industry and academics in the future Dale Apr 1 2011 This is somewhat bizarrely a community who are fixated on acronyms My suggestion is to forget about all of the current use names and concoct something entirely new short and sweet that is chosen by an independent body and announced to all therefore it gives everyone equal time to acquire URLs tweak Search etc and then it starts to be incorporated as a new standard 3 4 letters that are memorable and easy to make plural The trick is not to let any one company own the Search results from day one Otherwise let the anarchy continue Erwin van Lun Apr 1 2011 Dale Except for virtual agent there are almost no professional conversational AI developers vendors in the top 10 of any keyword Try it yourself And there is no vendor at a firm 1 position what would be impossible to change Occasionally a company is listed 1 but that changes day by day In any case there is room for 8 companies in the top 10 of the SERP the lowest 2 are never clicked thus irrelevant out of 200 companies estimated by us What to do about that Shall we set up a list of companies like this http www chatbots org companies Would love to hear more about your actually Why don t you register and create a profile http www chatbots org register Glenys McLaughlin Apr 10 2011 Erwin I agree that chatbot works well in the enterprise space in some markets it s just not been my experience I find it interesting that terms like Virtual Expert Virtual Agent and Virtual Assistant seem to be more commonly used by the enterprise vendors such as those mentioned in the Gartner report Re levels of sophistication my original comments were not particularly clear I was thinking of sophistication in functionality and deployment for example the type of functionality that the software has in addition to input recognition and conversational response e g profiling conversationalists intelligently identifying gaps in chatbot knowledge handing over the customer and conversation to a human based on specific parameters etc the actions in which the chatbot can be successfully employed e g real time personalisation of responses support through complex processes intelligent product recommendation up selling and cross selling etc the channels in which the chatbot can be deployed e g integrated across mobile web social media virtual worlds interactive surfaces etc the types of metrics the chatbot can provide e g sophisticated analysis and classification of conversations rather than just numbers of questions asked and answered integration with web analytics etc and so on I agree that all developers are probably aiming for a high level of sophistication in managing the conversational interaction Perhaps not all developers are aiming for a high level of sophistication in functionality It would be interesting to survey developers on that Erwin van Lun Apr 10 2011 Glenys even when all developers are looking for the term with higherst sophiscation confusing clients by using total different terminology is not what help to grown the market It would help if then would say We are building chat bots of class C or We are building virtual experts these are virtual humans specialized in product knowledge or embodied conversational agent these are virtual agents with a high end graphic interface In all three cases the industry would have agreement to use chatbot virtual human or virtual agent as the basic keyword They you can talk about the
