on Intelligent buildings The following is an Abstract of What Derek will be presenting Building services consume energy and require careful maintenance if they are to be continuously reliable Compared to the building fabric their lifetime is comparatively short However they make buildings habitable for people to work and live in them by providing air and water at suitable temperatures besides light power and a host of other utilities for the occupants The heating ventilation and airconditioning are a major consideration because they provide heating and cooling for human needs With the pressures to design new and refurbish old buildings to be sustainable and also healthy we need to consider alternatives to the traditional approaches to systems provision Technology is advancing more and more rapidly but cannot provide all the answers Throughout history people from all cultures throughout the world have discovered ingenious ways of dealing with the rigours of climate whether hot humid or very cold Then there is Nature The marvels of the plant and animal worlds give ceaseless wonder and can stimulate us to think more laterally By reviewing the thinking behind vernacular styles and being prepared to learn from Nature we can design more naturally responsive buildings Organic architecture is known but let us adopt this approach together with appropriate technology to the buildings and systems as a whole to achieve sustainable intelligent architecture for people and society You dont need to be a CIBSE Member to attend but it would be appreciated if you could advise our event organiser Simon Owen if you wish to attend so that we may set the refreshments at the correct level The event will be held at Leeds Rosebowl Leeds Beckett Met University Calverley Street Leeds 21 10 2014 10 31 15 Post event comment Derek provided a great

industry and society We hope to have a good strong attendance from the many personalities in our region Some ideas for discussions Are the professional bodies construction institutes like the DVLA of the engineering world With people seeming to focus on getting Chartered in the same way as passing their driving test and doing no more is CIBSE becoming less relevant to Engineering for most Engineers especially as there are less people taking to the roads both physically and metaphorically Educating Generation Y for the future How do we ensure that Engineering skills are fostered in our next generations devloping young peoples minds and attitudes for future innovation not just repetative delivery Ooops we ve done it again Go back to pre crash 2008 and the biggest worry for most employers was finding enough people with the right skills to deliver projects in the timescales and fees available here we are barely out of the recession and seeming to have the same struggle without the same workload Skills shortage have we done it again and what can we do about it Will we ever BIM together There is a lot of talk about BIM and the benefits but seemingly few projects that make it worth the investment or give it chance to demonstrate them Are there BIMefits or is it just a BIM white elephant Nobody understands me I m a Chartered Engineer but I don t use a spanner get dirty or drive a van How can we educate the public about what we do This house believes the single and childless deserve a work life balance too what choices and practices to include everyone To confirm your attendance at the event please Email Simon Owen by clicking here Refreshments will be served from 6 00pm for a 6

an emergency and where is the best place to sit On top of the Black box because that always survives is not the right answer Following the presentation and question and answer section there is a rare opportunity for 18 people to view and experience the full effects of an aircraft fire fighting simulator at close hand The Civil Aviation Authority standards require the Emergency Services integral to each Airport to undergo aggressive simulation of emergency procedures associated with a distressed aircraft and at RHADS there is an Aircraft Fire Trainer based upon a B767 4M dia fuselage that performs a variety of operational tasks to allow the training to take place This section of the tour will require you to pass through an airside security process and as such you should bring with you either a passport or Both sections of your driving licence Sorry no exceptions it s a DFT ruling and they are strict on application You will then be bussed to the simulator on the airfield and given a tour of the simulator lasting approximately 30 minutes to see the control room and the B767 training fuselage We will then return to the RHADS firefighting facility for departure with it being expected that we will be finished for c8 00 8 15 pm The address for the RHADS Fire Station is Old Bawtry Road Finningley DO NOT GO TO THE MAIN TERMINAL BUILDING ACCESS TO THE FIREFIGHTING FACILITY IS GAINED THROUGH FINNINGLEY VILLAGE The following link takes you to google maps https maps google co uk maps q finningley hl en ll 53 47882 0 997149 spn 0 006525 0 017595 geocode hnear Finningley South Yorkshire United Kingdom t h z 17 Attendance at this event will be strictly on a first come first served basis
